Hematogen is still very popular in Russia, nowadays you can find one even in usual groceries while waiting in the line, but of course the variety of flavours is bigger in the pharmacies (we have dry one or chewy, bittersweet or less sweet, with dark or dairy chocolate, with raisins, with berries, with fruits, with other vitamins and minerals, with salt, and so on)

I was quite anemic after giving birth to my son and this really helped me feel better in no time. It's very cheap too - the most expensive gematogen bars I've seen are around the 35 rub mark (55 cents) and the ones I used to buy (being broke since my bf left me when my son was only two weeks old and he was the provider in our family) was only 18 rub per bar (28 cents) - and it did it's job great. It gave me energy, it helped with my anemia, it was the best thing to eat when I was feeling awful. I have to say, it's quite common even today - here in Siberia there is a brand that does gematogen bars with coconut flakes, pine nuts, etc. They are quite good, yet still very sweet.

I've had blood transfusions from severe anemia. Thankfully never had to taste it. Emmy has no fear!

It isn't bad every kid who has ever liked a paper cut has tasted it.

@@kattrablake7008 That's true but it's less disgusting when it's your own blood. Silly I know.

@@kimberlys8422 yes but have you ever cooked a roast that didn't bleed a little when you thawed it out? Or chicken, or pork chops? *shrugs* it is just part of eating meet. I actually think using it in food is more respectful of the animals that meat comes from because you are not just taking the best parts and throwing the rest away. Every part that can be used should be.

@@kattrablake7008 Of course I have. I cook meat for my family every day. I just don't drink it straight! Must've watched too much Andy Zimmern.

I have a chronic illness that causes me to be anemic. I’ve had infusions and transfusions for a long time. I would definitely try this. I take iron supplements but they make me nauseated.

In Latvia we also have this candy in pharmacies and stores. I really liked it when I was a child, but I didn't know out of what it was made back then.
