Rassolnik is a soup made primarily of pickled cucumbers, pearl barley, and usually kidney meat (beef or pork). "Rassol" refers specifically to pickle juice, which is often used to flavor the broth. It's a popular cure-all, as I understand it. Colds, the flu, hangovers, pregnancy woes; Babushka's prescription is rassolnik.

in Polish 'barszcz' doesn't have to be made of beets ;) that one is called 'barszcz czerwony'. Sometimes a totally different soup is called 'barszcz' and I believe this is what you had - pretty sure it works like that in Russia too

You should try using these as a soup base! You could mix the paste with broth and add veggies! When you said some were soup flavored the first thing I thought of was what would happen if you mixed them with broth or water to make an actual soup!

I guess if the Astronaut's didn't get crackers, maybe not tho. And I guess you were trying to do everything as they would do it in space ! I couldn't have squirted those straight in my mouth. Maybe in a spoon, then in my mouth. Ha Was there no suggestion for pre-kneading them (possibly heating as well) before eating ?
