Gnomeo and Juliet did the same thing; a porcelain gnome gets fucking obliterated in a lawnmower race and straight up dies but is seen glued together in the credits. Basically any studios way of getting cold feet when brutally killing off a character

The script has a section of everybody kinda looking around and going “Okay, this is bad but it was an accident” and DD is like “Accident or not, you are going to pay for this.” Not entirely non-remorseful killing, but I def get where you’re coming from.

I have like 15k scripts - used to be an assistant working in Lit Management - and I don’t have all of those… David Self is a helluva genre writer with a real knack for layered and complex world-building, despite his produced work not displaying much of this skill set. His draft of ROBOCOP (written for Aronofsky) is just bonkers. Like, for starters, it’s set in the year 2199 and takes place on a mostly-abandoned earth, several generations after the fall of a blade-runner/judge-dredd-style society. It’s Extremely dark and lacking ANY whiff of satire, but potentially brilliant in its own right.

If you wanna read something good check out COBWEBS or RED LETTER. Both scripts rule. The CONJURING scripts are also superb. The early drafts are just so well written.

There is an entire beat in the actual script where all of Andy’s toys basically go “Oh wow this IS really bad, but it was also an accident!” And DD is like “That doesn’t make it okay, somebody has to pay for this!” So they do linger on it for just a bit longer in the script. But it literally never comes up again after that scene, so fair point.

I had no idea there was another version of Circle 7's TS3. I wasn't expecting much, but honestly... this is actually way better than the recalled buzz script. And in some ways even better than the actual 3 (and most especially better than 4). Shame it never got made... Though if possible, I would love to see this version get revived and turned into an actual movie by Pixar. They did say that they might do more sequels in order to keep the studio afloat, so I could technically see it being possible (if they're open to using Circle 7's script rather than writing their own that is, and if the team and voice actors are open to do more with the franchise despite 4's ending). Though if it was to be made, a lot of changes would be needed in order to fit in with TS3 and TS4's canons (as well as a way to still have the Potato Heads in the story despite both actors passing away. Maybe do what TS4 did with Don Rickles, but with way more archive recordings used and better utilized in context). The movie would take place between 2 and 3 (like you said in a reply to someone), but one of the major things I would change is the ending. In this version, Dave and Andy's mom don't get married. Not out of anger per say, but more due to the fact that throughout the film, things start to not work out between the 2 as they hoped (all starting with Dave burning dinner). They still have a great friendship however and continue being friends to this very day. Same goes for Andy and Sunny. Even though now they don't have to worry about being part of a family anymore, both still become best friends. Plus even when Andy grows up in 3, Sunny goes to the same college as Andy where their friendship still goes on strong. The toys part of the story would be more or less the same, but with adjustments made to the script and pacing. As well as the "Buzz x Jessie" stuff being reduced so that canon-wise it would be saved for 3 with Buzz's Spanish mode. Plus the "Rex trying to scare everyone" part would be taken out because tbh, it was kind of annoying and didn't add much. Other than the changes I would've made, I can definitely see this working as an actual Toy Story prequel. For a rough draft, it surprisingly has a lot going for it. Way more than what TS4 and Lightyear tried to do ironically enough. Pls hire me Pixar.

Me interviewing Jim originally started out as me doing that version of the movie, then Jim mentioned to me that he wrote this version, too, so I changed my plans. Pixar claims to have never looked at the Circle 7 stuff, but there are SO many coincidences…

Honestly, I think I liked the other Recall Toy Story 3 more. When I was little I would watch Toy Story 2 over and over again a lot more than the others and I feel like Recall Toy Story 3 seems more like a follow up to Toy Story 2 with the action being similar. One part of the real Toy Story 3 I like so much is the jail break story with all the prisoners and the Recall Scripts also kinda has that. Also my favorite charter is Buzz Lightyear so I'm probably biased.

Pixar should be on it's own run by John Lassiter, by the way, John Lassiter should not have been fired from Pixar, Cancel Cancel Culture, Marvel should've stayed with Paramount and Lucasfilm and Star Wars should've stayed independent. Disney should've never bought Fox either. Fox should've been it's own thing. Disney should only own Walt Disney Studios/Walt Disney Animation and the theme parks. That's it.

It didn't. One of the guys behind the final Toy Story 3 explained that they refused to read the Circle 7 draft, meaning that they came up with their own story from the ground-up.

This sounded like a really good premise for a Toy Story sequel until the scene where Rex accidentally killed the porcelain doll. That’s when the film kinda loses its appeal to me. Idk this draft has really good ideas and themes but it also sounds tepid. I think the gang being stranded in a jungle in Mexico is kinda a strange setting for a Toy Story movie as that could be a setting for any film sequel. I do like the bootleg toys tho, that’s a toy-centric thing a Toy Story film would do. I don’t really like or care about the two guys that the toys assault, they feel out of place. I find it funny that Zurg is randomly part of the group and isn’t that relevant to the story besides the beginning. Also Woody doesn’t seem to have much to do in the film, let alone have an actual character arc like in the rest of the films (except for the blended family arc but that’s everyone’s arc). The best part of the film is the blended family storyline and how it neatly contrasts with the toys and the humans. I think this film would’ve been stronger if it didn’t go off the rails and had a second draft (as all Toy Story films get a better rewrite). But ultimately I do think Pixar’s Toy Story 3 and 4 are the stronger films than Circle 7’s versions of 3 (and 4). But at least we did get Spanish Buzz so that’s odd but a welcome surprise.

I only ever knew about the "Recall" version of Toy Story, Never heard about this one. Another one of those, "sounds great on paper" stories, but I can see why Disney preferred the "Recall" plot, which I hope you'll also cover as well.

Before I reached out to Jim, I also had no idea this version existed- I don’t think anybody outside of Disney at the time did, so when he mentioned this version of Toy Story 3, it was too good of an opportunity to pass up. As for the Recall plot, I can’t tell you when it would be, but that version will 10000000% be covered at some point.

It's not a bad story the beginning with the ceramic doll is pretty messed up even for a Pixar movie and some of the comedy is pretty low brow, a nut shot in Toy Story? Not even Toy Story 4 did it and it was the worst one. Thankfully Mike got the boot so Iger and Jobs could mend fences, imagine a Pixar with no Wall-E, Brave, UP, Cars and Toy Story 3

Although there are a couple of elements that seem interesting to me, some were even kept in Pixar's Toy Story 3 like Spanish Buzz, it doesn't quite convince me, I think I prefer the Recall script over this one even though it's almost a rehash of Toy Story 2. Another script that I'd like to find is the Toy Story 4 written by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, which was a romantic comedy focused on Woody and Bo Peep that would not be very focused on the interaction between children and toys, but almost nobody has been interested in looking it up and I'm curious to see how different it is from the Ben Karlin script and what elements (aside from Bo Peep's important role) were kept in the final 2019 version, since it is assumed that 75% was scrapped.

There is a Ben Carlin script that is wildly different than the one used for the final movie (No carnival, no road trip, Woody and Buzz switch heads in it, etc.) and I always assumed that it was similar to the Jones and McCormack version. But I'm not 100% on that.

@@HemmasStudios_ I suppose that some elements of Ben Karlin's script would be kept, such as the fact that Bo Peep would be part of Bonnie's room, that's a sure thing, but the rest would be different taking into account that according to the little that was told about it, The plot was that Woody and Buzz would go on a search for Bo, something that does not exactly happen in Karlin's script since at first Woody refuses to search Bo because he thinks that now he will be there to make another child happy, and later the Woody and Bo's meeting occurs when Woody arrives at a pawn shop after meeting the early versions of Ducky and Bunny, and that Bonnie's cousin would switch Woody and Buzz's heads. PD: Will you make a video about the Karlin's script with a small mention of the Jones and McCormack's script?.

The fact that this was better written than 4 (and arguably 3) is proof that Disney and Pixar were losing their touch by this point. The Recall draft, from what I’ve heard, sounded kind of hokey and not like a good idea at all, which is, in essence, Circle 7 Animation themselves 🤷🏽‍♂️ Perhaps Pixar would’ve greatly benefited by never being bought by Disney?

I'd venture to say that Pixar's prime era was through Toy Story 3, but after that, it was so inconsistent, and the intervening 13 years since, it's always interested me what the world would have looked like with an independent Pixar. As far as Circle 7 being hokey, I think it's more hit and miss. Lost in Scaradise for my money is easily one of the greatest films never made.
