Vet student here, I can answer the question about expressing dogs' anal glands. Dogs have scent glands on either side of the anus, it's why they sniff each others' butts. A little bit of stink-oil comes out with every poop, to make space for the fresh oil being made in the glands. Sometimes though, particularly if the dog has lots of runny poops, the oil isn't pushed out naturally and builds up; this is when you'll see them scraping their butt along the floor (unless they have intestinal parasites). If it doesn't resolve itself, you'll need to get the glands expressed before they rupture. Many groomers offer this service, or you can get your vet to show you how to do it (be warned, it's extremely messy and stinky), by pressing the glands from the outside. If this doesn't fix it, the glands may need to be expressed from inside, and this must be done by a qualified veterinarian as a misjudged poke can rupture them. Yep, dogs are gross - but so's Jim, and we still love him :)

By God, I had a stapled haemorrhoidectomy in Hong Kong back in 2010 or so, Best money I ever spent, life has been perfect since. However, the surgeon at the time proudly showed me the blister pack wrapped one-shot use appliance that was to be consumed during the procedure and proudly declared that it was American made and of extreme high quality. (looked like a giant snippy ass dildo). Anyway, he asked me if I had any concerns about the upcoming procedure, at which pointed I queried him about the device, since being a Kiwi my arse only accepts metric devices. My Hong Kong surgeon failed to see the humour in my query. Despite me informing him of the tragic consequences of a certain space mission that resulted in miscommunication between the metric and imperial standards. I didn't want my arse to become the next Challenger....
