We have dish soap here with obviously a different name (since we are in another continent), but I use it for rubber lube and its a great hand cleaner too, and yes, when everything is shiny clean it tends to make life better by a long shot. ! Thanks for the video, and your integrity.

I have had the experience of changing out two sets of those bushings. I ended up using some heat on the housings to get the old ones to break the rubber loose, on the install I used a straight grinder with a stiff wire brush to clean the housings then ground a slight lead in chamfer to help start the bushing back in , lubed with dish soap and a port-a-power them back in. It was not a fun job, but just a bit of a fight getting it done. In my book you did great sir, always a pleasure to watch you at a project no matter what it is. Thanks for the video.

We used a needle scaler on our jobs(we live back here where they use a lot of liquid brine on the roads) and it creates havoac on all these suspensions. My hats off to you. That installation tool is worth its weight in gold.

I can tell you for a fact that after those bushings are pressed in and they sit for an hour or two in the manufacturing facility they can be a real bear to get out. There are only two sizes of bushing. One is the narrow and the other is the wide. So a wide bushing will be a wide bushing and the same for the narrow ones. Obviously there are different hangers and what not but as far as those there are only the two. The packet of oil is also meant to help the bushing swell into the bushing tube and be locked in tight. Worked for Hendrickson for several years at their largest factory in the US in machining and fab. Loved working there but I got tired of the factory life.

I was watching a TV Show, Highway Thru Hell, and they had a semi attached to a walking floor trailer that had gotten wedged between a mountain and the road. I had never seen a walking floor trailer, and the wrecker guys said that it was expensive and they didn't want to do any damage to it. They showed the hydraulic system, that makes it work!

I did a set of these bushings on my own trailer. I built a puller out of some scrap pipe, steel plate, 1" threaded rod and 2 nuts for the rod welded together. I had to weld the 2 nuts together because with one it just stripped the threads. Those bushings are really tight in there

I've done a shit ton of those bushings at my last job. I've actually worn out 3 of those tools. The best way to get them out when using the tool is to heat the eye and get the rubber to start melting. It's best to do them outside due to the amount of smoke lol. And yes, you do add/remove those washers under the plate to get your centering correct.

Hey Warren, if thats rubber into steel I do Volvo tag axle springs and MAN front axle control arm bushes in work all the time, I've cut through the rubber webs before today which collapses the rubber bush enough to knock or puch them out, if it leaves rubber in steel burn it out, it its rust then you did what I do, to clean the bore I use a large 60 grit flap mop, the type that go in a drill or die grinder, putting new bushes in I use tyre bead soap ( the blue stuff) and have made custom tapered pull tubes and pusher plates, ive also got a hollow tube hydraulic cylinder with a 9 inch stroke to pull them through, great job Bud 👍 Well done 👏

Another Great Video, Warren. I appreciate you took the time to explain the part’s issue and how you figured it out. Definitely looks like a job that needs the installation tool. I wonder how much different it is going to Diesel Tech School now compared to the mid 1990’s. Just your videos alone can walk you through some tough jobs that would have needed manuals or someone to help you with it. The biggest thing I see that helps me on a daily basis is.pdf manuals. Getting the manual used to be the hardest part of the job. Thanks again for taking your time to drag us along.

i started pushing them out with a porta power I used part of the tool on one side i made a cutter to remove the old one works good and easy, they're hard to get out but just pop in lube the hole and bushing good

I have done tons and tons of s of these bushings and have never used a rachet, always used a 3/4 impact gun and they are installed in about 30 seconds

You would still have the same problem getting them out even if you did have the tool. I’ve had to put the rosebud on those two to get them out. Some of those beams crust up pretty bad on the bushing bore.

I've had better luck using tire installation soap when installing rubber suspension bushings. I've used dish soap, but it seems to get "tacky" and gum up. Warren on the Cummins Insite program, there is an option to turn off the Work Order creation so you don't have to deal with it every time you connect. At the top of the screen go to "tools", then "Options" , then "Work Orders" and then uncheck the "enable work order mode" box. Hope that helps ease your frustration.

I've started wrenching for a living on logging equipment.. Hendrickson bushings are never the highlight of my day.. We have the tool and it's always still a sticky mess.. and with any luck the axles have worn through the mounts.. and then you gotta get all the rust out of there

I know a considerable difference between automotive / light truck and a semi trailer suspension like this, but the few miserable years I had to routinely replace automotive leaf spring and control arm bushings in the land of 5-6 months of sub-zero, snow, rain, rot and rust, we'd burn out the old bushings with a cutting torch, applying just enough heat to keep them burning after soaking them in waste oil. Always had a fire extinguisher at the ready. Final clean up with a coarse flap wheel in a 1/2" drill and push new bushings in with tire soap or WD-40, wood blocks, and a sledge hammer. Porta Power, or even a bottle jack would have been much better, but beyond what we had for the tool budget back then. And yes - agreed, Go-Pros are over-priced junk. I'll never buy another one.

Someone told me once the dish soap had salt in it and he told me never clean a car or truck with it as it will scratch the paint up and the salt will rustjack the inside of the bushing i found a dab of petroleum jelly works good to nice one warren

We got a triple axle tore apart in the shop right now and it needs all six bushings done. Its been a lot of fun so far, especially because the bolts wont come out, everything is rusted solidly together. In the video , you said you had to take out the bushings again after you just got them in? Or did I mis understand? i was wondering if taking the two washers out to pull the bushing in a little more wasn’t the right call? Or do they need to be centred like you had them?

I'll do the soap, chamfer the bushing with a flap disk, and the hanger tube, push it in with Porta power, but I'm finding it hard to believe I'm going to fit that bushing in there, same damn size, cars you can get two piece nylon, wish that was the case here.This hard ass shit ain't gonna go in the hole, 1/2" interference fit, rubber is like a rock.

That tool looks like it was worth the money. A ten minute job with the taper tube and impossible without. I'll bet the time saved paid for the tool on this job alone - but only if the customer pays you of course!

Another option is to sub the work out to someone who has got the equipment. Hey Warren, i work for a fleet of reefer and i know how much of a pain in the rear those bushings can be. Idk if you did or not but the torx on the inside will snap when torqued I usually use my 3/4 gun to torque them down great video have a bless day buddy

Did u bevel the inside edge of the bushing pipe before trying to install new bushing makes new bushing center easier. Also they make a solid bushing for this application. Hendrickson has always had bushing walk because of the slotted bushing.

Hey Warren, I know that you ALREADY know about the GoPro left channel audio issue. But.. if you isolate the left channel, audio was picked up on the left channel when you bumped the camera\getting on the plywood. Most likely a wire or solder joint has failed. Louis Rossmann could probably fix that for you for not much money. If not, you'll LOVE his rants and stance on Right To Repair. Just an option to have a 100% operational back-up camera.
