It's not just the fact that Henk sang it with distortion for Floor, he learned a completely new way of singing, just so he could sing this way for her. That's commitment, and it's shows the level of respect he has for her.

You are one of the few who really get it, you are a lovely person who oozes the love for music, sharing it with all of us in these dire times. Henk truely is a kind and gentle man, after his solo show Hero's, he lifted my mum on a stool and hugged her, she had a smile from ear to ear, radiating, looking 20 years younger than 84. She was a total fangirl like Floor ;-). Seeing her so happy made me love Henk even more, I am forever grateful for all he has given and is giving. I'll never forget his loving heart which he shared in a hug and the look in his eyes who see right through you. Thank you for your sharing and invoking these sweet memories. Tomorrow I'll look at the photo's with her to make her feel that happiness and smile again

One of the best covers in the world ever! Floor interviewed Henk this fall. Henk said that every year he goes to his former singing school where his voice is checked, an annual inspection ... Like if you use your car for annual maintenance, Henk does it for his singing voice!

He really is, and I think the host said it best, Henk is like the Cool uncle on the couch, he just seems to have that sort of really chill personality that you could just sit around with and have a beer. I really have to agree with that, I wish this format should be the Gold standard for how music shows should me. Don't get me wrong there is a time and place for direct competitions, but this really seems to make music and acceptances of different types of music more digestable to a wide audience.

Henk, sitting on a stool like a zen master and singing - vocal coaches have mentioned that it's not easy to perform any song that way, but he's a master who dares to step out of his own cosy bubble (including distortion), 'cause of respect that has grown during show recordings... And Floors eyes sparkle when she listens her hero...

He really was like a Zen master, just piercing Floor's soul with that performance. the one thing that caught me with Henk, isn't that he had to step out of his cozy bubble, I feel like hes been held in that buble cause if you did something else you wouldn't be called back for more work with that field. But inside I think he always wanted to do more. But thats just my thought or feelings on it no evidence to back that up

Henk is amazing, and you captured that with your reaction. He is really a pure operatic singer, and only really sings musical theatre and operetta because there is not enough pure opera work available. When he went through the conservatoire, they kicked him out a year early because "we have nothing left to teach you". So this was WAY out of his comfort zone, using distortion is something he never did in his life until this, and he learned the technique especially for Floor. His range is massive - he is actually a baritone, and can reach down into the less extreme depths of bass and right up into the tenor range, even singing tenor parts, as there are more tenor parts to sing!. It's a shame that so few solo parts are available for deeper voices. I'm a bass (and therefore, suffer even more from that), so only have a little overlap with his range at my upper end and his lower - so the start was merely comfortable by my standards (but then I can sing off the bottom range of any instrument barring a few of the largest pipe organs - I'm not kidding, I can shake walls and floors fairly easily [a BBC recording engineer joked that he should have used a seismograph for my voice instead of a normal microphone - although they did find one that had enough low range response], and find even higher bass notes challenging). So he was right up in his DIScomfort zone in the tenor range for most of this! And he is a really pleasant person, too, as seen by the way in which the whole group regarded him as "Uncle Henk" throughout the whole series. I've borrowed his description "Good music is good music" a few times, as he doesn't seem in any way affected by the "opera snobbery" that tends to infect that style of singer, and the fans of it. The fact that he set the condition on his performance with Floor of "Phantom" as performing it with Nightwish is a great demonstration of how open he is to other genres. When it finally happens, I really hope it is recorded properly with a professional crew, as the number of people who would love to be there would fill several large stadia!

Hi Phil, thanks for sharing all that detail, it really is amazing the range that he has. Dude that sick you can get that low, my memory is failing me right now so I don't remember the name, but I remember being introduced to a Fuge performed on a Pipe organ in school remember feeling weird while listenting to it. The professor told is that it was normal becasue some of the notes were so low that it was right on the edge if not just out side of our range of hearing but we could still feel the vibrations in the air. and since then I was hooked on how bass can really physically make you feel the music. Back to Henk, I wouldn't have know he was in his "discomfort" zone at all until he started adding some distortiong, and thats only cause his face got a little red. He is an amazing performer.

Floor was walking on clouds for a month after that, that happy was she with that present Uncle Henk gave her. And i was waiting for this one because of obvious reasons hehehe, told ya you'd love this one ;) Henk is a vocal powerhouse just like Floor is and he certainly was another standout for that season, heck that entire season was high quality and good stories, very enjoyable to watch and listen too. Floor and Henk became pretty close friends during the show, and they both guests each others shows afterwards - and Henk is going to be a guest star on the 2 Nightwish shows in the Netherlands, performing Phantom of the Opera - abd maybe more!! On Floor's 10 solo shows after the TV-SHOW, Henk and Floor are doing different songs together - Henk really enjoys singing metal, as long as it is good music, and he can learn new stuff. They are a tad heavy (730lb fully gassed) so though it was warmer today, I went in via my old Nissan Frontier. We got snow last night, and within two blocks, I have to cross a river to get to work. The ABS on the truck was in action for the stop sign on the opposite side of the bridge. Yes, the stop mark is on the bridge and Marinette (the bridges are maintained from the Wisconsin side of the border) hadn't salted yet. A lighter bike, and I would still have gone in on 2 wheels. I should get a good small electric start for the commute to work. It's only 3 miles (I also have an '80 XL250S and a '78 CB400T but kick starts and not on top form. Future projects.) so While cold, it isn't far, or high speed (25mph all the way, really) so it is 10 minutes ride, tops

A couple of things: Henk is a famous European opera singer, yet he is nervous singing for Floor. That tells us something. When Emma and Henk sang a duet, that was a KZbinr singing with a pro opera singer, yet he gave her the utmost respect and an equal footing on stage. Very few would do that.

It was Henk who wanted to perform that song with Emma. Some people doubted their voices would match. But ofcource Henk knew what he was doing. And Henk being the nice man and pro he is made sure he wasn't outperforming her, no he was comforting her, getting the best out of her, it takes two for a duet. I mean no disrespect to Emma, but more put yourself in her place, sharing a stage with a seasoned pro and you being an upcomming star, that can be intimidating.

It was a tour I learned so much about singers and artistry. And by the way, that band behind them is great, they are amazing talented and on point on every style. All of them true professionals. The show itself has a very good concept, but especially this season is more than anyone could ever expect ..

I've lived in cities about 12 years, and it was fun. Now I reside about the same environment than Floor. And it's nice to an elderly statesman that I am. There are pros and cons to both. Henk's performance there was an excellent one, but when he switched to distortion, his head turned too red 😠😵. It was not his thing at all as a classically trained singer.

I haven't settled on one yet, but I have to say at times I love both. As for Henk, while it might not be his thing, I feel he really enjoyed doing it. ✌✌
