The problem with this is that the burden will fall on the poor in our country. In work poverty is at record levels, people are working for almost nothing other than buy food and pay bills, and even then, some have to chose whether to "heat or eat." So you are asking people who are already at breaking point to pay more tax for this, as that is the only way to raise the money - the corporations and the rich won't be paying it, that's for sure. If you could ensure that the descendants of the rich who caused all these problems bore the brunt of the burden, then it would be okay, but otherwise you are asking the poor to pay for something they didn't really do - it was organised and ran by the rich and powerful. Also Ironic that this is at the Oxford Union, seeing as a lot of the ruling class went there and still do.

Hope this topic catches on right from school elocution in India. As Indians, we aren't programmed in our DNA to carry the baggage of hard feelings for whats happened, but an acknowledgement would make things easier & an apology could take things far...

1. History doesn’t suddenly begin when the European powers engage in imperialism - you know, that thing that countless prior civilisations got up to. 2. The West already insources large populations from both former colonies and then some. 3. More often than not, this sanctimonious rhetoric comes from the mouths of bourgeois to upper-class diaspora, whose ancestors lived (and continue to live) far better than the native lower classes of Britain and other formerly imperial nations. More poignantly still, India - along with various other developing countries - is on track to becoming a key part of the burgeoning multipolar paradigm. They don’t need charity from the United Kingdom.

1. Africa and the rest of world would still have slavery and be poorer than they are today without Britain banning slavery. Britain's brief role in Africa's 4000 year long slave trade lasted just 181 years and involved 3.8 million people and was just 3% of Britain's economy. The Transatlantic slave trade was ended by the UK and African empire's opposed it at every chance they had as they were making so much money from it and it was a tradition amongst African leaders.. 2. The Islamic slave trade lasted 1300 years and involved both chattel slave trade and sex slave trade and over 17 million people were taken from Africa and Europe . It was ended by the British. 3. British tax payers bought the freedom of black slaves across the world and prevented millions more being dragged into slavery. ......Africans and the rest of the world owe Britain a huge thank you.

NEIL DEGVILLE Get educated before inserting your foot in your mouth. LATE VICTORIAN HOLOCAUST, Mike Davis points out that here were 31 serious famines in 120 years of British rule compared with 17 in the 2,000 years before British rule. In his book, Davis tells the story of the famines that killed up to 29 million Indians. These people were, he says, murdered by British State policy. In 1876, when drought destituted the farmers of the Deccan plateau, there was a net surplus of rice and wheat in India. But the Viceroy, Robert Bulwer-Lytton, insisted that nothing should prevent their export to England. In 1877 and 1878, at the height of the famine, grain merchants exported record quantities of grain. As the peasants began to starve, government officials were ordered “to discourage relief works in every possible way”. The only relief permitted in most districts was hard labour, from which anyone in an advanced state of starvation was turned away. Within these labour camps, the workers were given less food than the Jewish inmates of Buchenwald, the Nazi concentration camp of World War II. Even as millions died, Lytton ignored all efforts to alleviate the suffering of millions of peasants in the Madras region and concentrated on preparing for Queen Victoria’s investiture as Empress of India. The highlight of the celebrations was a week-long feast at which 68,000 dignitaries heard her promise the nation “happiness, prosperity and welfare”. In 1901, The Lancet estimated that at least 19 million Indians had died in western India during the famine of the 1890s. The death toll was so high because the British refused to implement famine relief. Davis says life expectancy in India fell by 20 percent between 1872 and 1921. So it’s hardly surprising that Hitler’s favourite film was The Lives of a Bengal Lancer, which showed a handful of Britons holding a continent in thrall. The Nazi leader told the then British Foreign Secretary Edward Wood (Earl of Halifax) that it was one of his favorite films because “that was how a superior race must behave and the film was compulsory viewing for the SS (Schutz-Staffel, the Nazi ‘protection squadron’)” You couldnt pay your self out of this one.

NEIL DEGVILLE You figure out the numbers owed. Well known are incursions by British pirates, privateers or armed explorers,provided they were operating with the approval of their government.The need for a unilateral transfer of funds to britain was a constant factor and in fact increased progressively over time.The burden of the east India co. london establishment and of dividends to its shareholders was replaced after 1858 by "The cost of the Secretary of States India Office",while the India debt in england,already considerable thanks to the co. military adventures.All such adventures meant heavier outlay on the army mainly at a cost to the Indian exchequer.eg: In Egypt 1882 by gladstone,Sudan 1885-86/96 againts the Mahdi movement,China againts the Boxers in 1900.Military cost under curzon to the Indian govt by 1904-05 was 51.9% of indias budget(HOME charges).In a nut shell India was paying for englands invasions of other countries.An Indian army pvt received 9Rupees amonth while his british counterpart received 24Rupees plus a number of allowances.These "HOME CHARGES" also included pensions for british India officers,military and other stores purchased in england,cost of army training,cost of transport and campaigns outside India but charged on Indian finances.Breakup of Home charges 1901-02 3 million BP army expenses,4.3 million BP stores purchase,1.3 million BP pensions,6.4 million BP Railway guranteed interest others for a total of 17.3 million BP. Does this girl think Ireland gets reparations too? We were arguably Britain's first colony. Between the plantations (out go the Irish Catholics, in come the Protestant Scots); Irish slave trade in the 17th century; Oliver Cromwell's genocide at Drogheda; and the exporting of food during the Irish potato famine which killed 1 million people, Ireland suffered a lot. Honestly Britain doesn't owe anybody anything though. Imagine forcing British taxpayers to pay for this. This girl is talking about spending other people's money on something that would make her feel personally better. Should Turkey pay for the Ottoman Empire? Spain and Portugal for Latin America? Iran for the Persian Empire? Italy for the Roman Empire? Mongolia for Genghis Khan? How far back do you go and who decides that?

The biggest reparation would be to have a museum of colonial horrors in London as impressive as the Louvre, where every visitor to London can appreciate the gross immorality of Britain. Britain cannot atone for their sins until everything is well documented and brought to light. So far Britain has had Nobel Prize winning littérateurs to document history the other way; Kipling and Churchill to name a few.

The reparation argument is based on the idea that Britain's actions existed in a vacuum. That the regions Britain occupied gained little from the UK presence and would have otherwise been peaceful and developed to a point at least where they are at. Did the British increase or decrease the levels of violence? Did they increase or decrease freedom and equality for the population? Did they increase or decrease the quality of living for the population?

IndianPrince04 If you compare 2015 to 1950s, then even Europe were sh't holes too with millions of migrants and homeless people. Countries like Japan, South Korea implemented western policy and look at where they achieved. That's what I said blind hatred. Modi is intelligent enough to go to these countries and offer them free land to start their business. Just like East India company did 200 years ago. But I agree we need west so that we can put blame of our mistakes..
@IndianPrince04

+shininglamb Wrong again. By 1950, European countries were among the richest in the entire world, with the highest standards of living (largely due to 4 centuries of colonialism). For you to compare that with 1950 India, where 90% were in abject poverty and illiteracy, that's a joke. Nobody disagrees that Nehru's socialist policies kept India in a state of poverty.. but the discussion here is about the ROOT CAUSE of that poverty. That Japan and Korea implemented Western Policy is irrelevant. Besides, capitalism isn't "western policy", its an economic theory (just like socialism). Using your logic, socialism is also a "Western policy" too. Also, Mr Tharoor isn't asking for monetary reparations, so I don't know why you're barking about "free money". So you post a bizarre comment, then you support it with even more misinformation. Can't believe I'm wasting time on you.

Lets forget the foreign aid that is constantly being sent to countries less well off than us, let us forget all the food water education etc the UK has charitably sent to less fortunate countries. This girl looks really oppressed, in the most privileged school on the planet and Britian! BRITIAN owes no repreations to anyone, are you asking ever other country in this world for the time they were empires ?? The streets are named after slave owners ? Less than 300 men owned slaves in the UK. There have been no slaves in England for a thousand years !!! If you do not like our culture you could always give up everything we supply have supplied and have given to the world ?

Can we have reparations for what the Vikings and Romans did to British people? Of course not. That would be ridiculous.
