The interior shock cord is to hold back the bug net. Unzip it fully throw over ridgeline then tie back with shock cord. The interior rings inside near the pull outs are to hold the reflective double bubble pad from sliding around (insulation pad sold separately.)

I take a 6" piece of colored paracord and tie it in a loop on the SnakeSkin loop on the head end of the hammock, which puts the zipper side on the same side every time

Yeah the expedition would work for you, rated to 250lbs and up to 6 feet. Our buddy used one, and he is over 6 foot 2 and over 250lbs and it worked for him, but cramped for length… shouldn’t be a problem for you!

I never really find any need to wrap the tarp cords round and round before I slide into the snakeskins > I just fold the cords gently in with the tarp as I roll it, hold the bunch in one hand and slide the skin down. This makes it quicker to pack and quicker to unroll and set up. Good point on making sure you know which side the zip is, I always leave a half hitch in the right end of the rope when facing the zip - thinking I might even put a tiny coloured loop round that end of the rope so it's there even if I forget. Also poss worth having a small pouch for pegs so you don't go tearing stuff up pushing them into the bag.

Is Hex fly better rain protection?

NuKanokwan TMK yes, the hex fly does provide superior rain protection. It does come with some downsides, as it weights more than the regular fly and it packs down to a larger size.
