Henry iii not as great as either Henry before him and an incompetent monarch which is not surprising given who his father was, but he was a pious and good father. Not to mention he sired Edward I and dear god that was a king even Richard the lionheart would think twice of messing with.

He reigned for 56 years in a very volatile and turbulent world, which is no small achievement. He was certainly not incompetent. Building was his passion, a bit harsh to say he wasn't very good at it... I'd say he was a very good king considering how disastrous the rule of his father had been. He stabilized things significantly. He preferred peace to war which has unfairly given him a reputation as a "boring" king. Probably the most underrated English king there ever was.

How was he to the common person? The peasant? Was he cruel? Or did his religious ideals make him more benevolent?

Henry III is known to have been a devoted father and loving husband. He was a strikingly unusual monarch in his age as he is not known to have had any mistresses, didn't care one bit for hunting and had no militaristic ambitions. His passion was building and he was very devout. He would often back down from conflicts in order to maintain peace, which may have helped him stay in power for 56 years, a record that would not be broken for 600 years. He got on tremendously well with the French king Louis, with whom he shared many interests. There would never be any hostilities between England and France during his reign. He was a remarkably peaceful king. He left England in a much better shape than it was when he took charge. His successful reign gave his son, Edward I, a very solid base upon which to build future success. In a way Edward I reaped what Henry III had sown. It's difficult to pass a diagnosis 800 years after he died, but based on what we know of his personality, decision making skills and interactions with people it could be that he had aspergers, a theory formulated by Matthew Lewis in his biography about Henry III. Well worth a read. Henry III is a criminally underrated king. A peaceful man who lived in a turbulent world where war and violence was glorified. That history remembers a lousy king such as Richard "the Lionheart" (who bankrupted England and spent almost his entire time as king on the continent) as a glorious king whereas Henry III is almost completely forgotten is a great shame indeed.

@boogiesmell5181 If the Anglo-Saxons were the base to English culture and identity, the Normans simply added to it when they integrated. Not stifle it. Richard was French in all but name, but from Henry III onwards, increasingly were Anglicized and acted in English interests I'd argue Henry III was English, though Henry V finally spoke English 100% of the time.
