In this video, we will again be reading from Harper Workman and Neil Currie’s 1924 unpublished manuscript, “Early History of Lake Shetek.” Workman and Currie came to Lake Shetek after the massacre, and they were interested in interviewing some of the survivors of the 1862 massacre, and creating a history for the present and future members of the community.
We will hear about the fate of some of the families who lived near Lake Shetek, but in even more isolated locations. This included the Brown family, as well as the family of Dutch Charley, whose real name was Carl Zierke. He had come to the area in 1858 and he lived about 16 miles west of Lake Shetek. This story tells of the terrible fate of these families in quite graphic detail, so, fair warning, if you are not in the mood to hear about some of the atrocities visited on these settlers

I used to work around Tracy, MN, just north of Lake Shetek. There is a nice little area next to Slaughter Slough that gives an account of the happenings that terrible day. Slaughter Slough and Bloody Lake, two grim reminders. I now live by Sleepy Eye but my Mother’s family has written history of their neighbors who were attacked by the Sioux Southwest of St. James.

My 5th removed grandparents, Michel and Marie Pellagie LeMay were in MN during the Souix Uprising. Their son Napoleon LeMay was a scout for Little Crow and I think a couple of his younger brothers did so as well. My 4th removed grandfather was also in the area but was 16 years older than his brother Napoleon. They were a farming family. Lake LeMay in MN is named after them. Although the MN census lists them as white, they were French Canadian Metis. Now they are listed ancestors of the Mendota Mdewakanton Dakota (Souix)

You asked for an opinion as to which account of the attack and followup was true. I tend to go with the version recorded closest to the incident. Later accounts often have an agenda beyond getting the facts down on paper.

Can you explore and do a video on "The History of Maria Kittle"? It's thought as the first of its kind in the Captive Narrative genre. It takes place in the later decades of a series of wider deadly conflicts with the New Amsterdam Hudson valley settlers and natives in the 1600 & 1700's. There is a lot of material to explore of this sort of history in that time and place. My 2cents... Steer a away from 'woke' because it is cringe and its usage doesn't have the punch many people think it does (at least for me).

Can't bring myself to listen but still appreciate this YT. I have an acquaintance of the opinion, all was peaceful in this land before the, "evil white man" came ... If I infer correctly the telling of this horror, evidence her opinion, "politically correct" but not factually..

The tribes here warred with each other and took captives as slaves all the time, so all wasn’t peaceful. That said, I’m registered with the great Cherokee Nation via my full blood maternal grandfather, and admire many things about their cultures, primarily how they lived on the land but could move along with nature still intact.

I’m thinking there’s the element of alcoholism and rivalry between these feuding parties that’s not being addressed.I bet if there were paternity tests during the time it would show many of those kids had different fathers. It seems every time the he came back the wife was pregnant with another baby. This is my opinion but things like this were common back then also.

The fact that much of white society was so emotionally cruel to victims may be the reason some women (and some children) willingly went back to the same Indians that abducted them in the first place.

There are no “woke” corporatists. That’s an oxymoron. No need to use “woke” which has been used among black and other urban/minority communities for decades to discuss the history that is not taught in schools and mainstream… like the effects of colonialism and patriarchy. You are providing history that good to be taught, so why the need to be racist by misusing a term that means “awake”.

🔺 The subject that becomes most apparent: the Peoples if this era, so limited in: Education, Formal Learning, and a Schooling in Wisdom, are "living largely, if not wholely, through their "Lower Mind, aka Ego Mind, aka Adolescent Mind" and in such, enveloped in chronic habit of "Judging others". The Lower Mind is where all the negative thought energies reside: ("fear, prejudices, judging, envy, jealousy, insecuritues, etc, low density thought + feeling energies.") The Conscious Application of Higher Mind resolves this, and is where all the Positive Thought Energies and Wisdom reside. The "Universal Law of Attraction" is "Absolute" ...
