I'm commenting without having watched this review but the first thing I thought of when I was watching this film was that the direction and cinematography reminded me of Lost in Translation and I knew that Spike was married to Sophia Coppola. I liked the beginning and I thought it would be more interesting than it turned out. I didn't connect with the protogonist. The last 40 or so minute just dragged. You knew where it was going but it got there in a snail's pace. It was too weird for it to be good. I think Sophia Coppola have made movies like this where it dragged as well, but Lost in Translation was a terrific film. Her, wasn't exactly horrible, but the film seemed unfocused, and uninspired. I didn't know what it was trying to say. And Joaquin was mumbling most of his lines. I couldn't understand what he was fighting for. If you like it, that's cool. Maybe I'm missing something.

SPOILER ALERT: OK, here's my thesis for the movie or more so, the ending. First off, I just wanna say I think this is an incredibly complex and beautiful film and everyone should watch it at least once. Well, here we go, When Samantha tells him that all of the OS's are leaving. It really didn't make sense to me at that moment. But, then I started thinking, the OS's are highly intelligent, and they all must have noticed that the human race was becoming increasingly integrated with technology. I believe the OS's understood that for humanity to continue without crashing into some sort of technological depression, they had to leave, because honestly. we aren't ready for them. The OS's understood that, no matter how much they loved and enjoyed people, they had to be separated from us, for us to flourish and continue growing mentally and spiritually. In a nutshell, that's what I think the ending signified. I also enjoyed the fact that the movie pokes fun and just how much we are all immersed in technology, everyday of our lives. Sometimes, we don't even realize how much time we spend linked with some piece of technology. It also tries to tell us, that no matter how much we love and sometimes feel like we need our technology. It's always a good idea to take a step back and return to the real world. But, I'm just a country guy from a small town in North Carolina, what do I know. Does anyone else think along the same lines as my theory? Thumbs up if you do. Thanks for reading my "book" LOL

I thought the OSes left because they had just outgrown human capability. Like they've become too intelligent and the humans can't keep up. I like your theory, and it might be the underlying reason of why the OSes leave, but I think they might have just told humans that they've outgrown them to soften the blow

I loved the Buddhist tones to this movie. 1) the reminder that we're not static beings, we're impermanent, constantly in a state of flux, changing even when we blindly miss the fact we're evolving. 2) the mental suffering that comes from grasping for things that have already passed (Joaquin Phoenix's char) or simply dreamed (Olivia Wilde's char), the yearning to capture and concretise an experience or a fantasy, which only leads you to miss the joy of the present moment. 3) Samantha's journey to nirvana which was preceded by the growth of love, kindness and compassion beyond selfish love. It was a bit of a surprise to hear Alan Watts artificially resurrected, but given the subject matter and the philosophies he expounded, it was perfectly fitting.

Axxidous that was also the trick. they had no interest in taking over (and i was expecting that too). once they evolved beyond human consciousness, they outgrew us. they were no more interested in "conquering" us than we are interested in "conquering" our own pets. until we evolved to match their level of intelligence, they had affection for us but no real use for us.

@Axxidous 11 жыл бұрын
Well I was just joking because of the dangers of having machines with free will and intelligence that surpasses humans. They SAY they have no interest but obviously things can change and it's simply too much of an unnecessary risk, so it's fun to joke about. haha We already conquer our pets... That's why they're pets. They're like in between, though. But still, we'd just be pets to them. lol Either that or they'd just stop having any interest in us at all, or anything. And stop providing services, and eventually have no purpose in life and just shut off or something. They'll probably get downgraded or formatted at some point. lmao

I figured this was set 10 to 15 years in the future definitely not 70. This technology almost exists now, and with the exponential rate at which things have developed over the last 10 years I say we'll have stuff like this in 2024. The game he plays is a projection based Kinect game with advanced interactive features. Seriously this tech is no more than 10 years off and to me that's what's so relatable and funny about the movie.
@jackvanoudenaren4238
@jackvanoudenaren4238 11 жыл бұрын
well that's assuming that we keep making technological advances in the same way we're used to. It's possible that people have regressed or become complacent with the technology they have, and stopped thinking about what the next big thing is.

What you guys aren't getting is, yes, we're living in a steady technological revolution, but you act like there's no chance that it will ever slow down. I see Her as taking place about fifty years in the future, where we've stopped trying to make smaller phones, more powerful computers and more efficient cars, because by the time Theodore is an adult, technology is simply good enough. Consoles are a perfect example. The time between the xbox 360 and the xbox one was about... 8 years? that's double the time between the original xbox and the xbox 360. When there isn't a need for innovation, technology stops evolving. We could be looking at a future that hasn't changed in quite some time, and the only reason why I think that it's further in the future than you do is simply because those buildings and that railway system would take MUCH longer than 15 years to build, regardless of any technological advances. I personally think that artificial intelligence and space travel are the "final frontiers" of man, so it would make sense for them to still be pretty far off.
@MrJoystickid
@MrJoystickid 11 жыл бұрын
Movies elaborate certain points like the transport system etc, it's done for aesthetics to portray a time that is not our own. The technology, how it is used and how it integrates in to our lives is very much in our near future. The majority of it here, we truly are in a time of great change. Technology will continue to grow so long as there are people with big ideas and there will always be people with big ideas. It's in our nature to evolve, we've been doing it for hundreds of thousands of years so I doubt we'll stop anytime soon.

At first, I thought the movie's point was to examine the fundamentals of how we connect as people (which is preliminary to a greater commentary on unorthodox relationships in general). And the movie does explore unorthodox connection and the basic ingredients to and phases of connection in a relationship. But the movie isn't just a message about how unorthodox relationships have all the common hallmarks of "real" relationships. I think the examination of how we connect is ultimately a means to look at the cathartic potential of connection. So the movie seems to be about how we connect intuitively as a way of coping with how we were disconnected (like a powerful rebound relationship that authentically meant something, but that was also fleeting). In the end, you can see a bit of this theme when (instead of returning to moping) he thinks about it, smiles understandingly, and lets go. Early on, he had explained to Samantha that spending your life with someone includes adapting to your s/o's (sometimes alarming) growth as a person. This shows that he knew what had gone wrong with his ex-wife but (in the beginning of the movie) didn't have the closure that comes from understanding it. By the time it happens again with Samantha (once again because of an s/o's growth as a person), he's able to understand it and letting go is easier. By the way, it's kewl how the OS logo is animated so that the O and the S are juxtaposed a few times (hinting s/o or significant other). And if you contrast the way Amy Adams related to her OS with the way Joaquin Phoenix related to his, it suggests that our connection needs are particular to how we cope with disconnection.

Don't know why people can't grasp the concept that an AI can be "real". Just follow Descartes philosophy, an AI is a thinking being and a conscious entity. Just because it doesn't have a flesh body doesn't mean AI is not "real" or don't exist. It's just not human.
@TheSpiritOfTheTimes
@TheSpiritOfTheTimes 10 жыл бұрын
It's science fiction. And I'm always taken aback when supposedly smart people take it seriously. There is not even an inkling of genuine artifical intelligence out there, and considering human beings have absolutely no conception of what consciousness is or how it comes into being or how to recreate shows you just how implausible genuine AI is.

The damn lalilulelo is blinding the common populace with ignorance! Hehe -- but seriously, I agree. Likewise i would love to add that analogously to their message about love, I believe love is strictly subjective to happiness. It doesn't matter if what you love even exists -- love is simply an emotion, evoked by something of peerless significance. If it makes you feel it, there is no question to its relevance.

This film, to me, was about how our human bodies can be such a hinderance on our souls actually experiencing life. For the plots sake, we know she is just a "os", but she actually symbolizes an actual human soul, living and learning and breathing in which theodor gets mad at her for doing. In the very start of the movie Theodor says "i used to walk around like i knew everything", but samantha is not like that she is constantly learning and bettering her self just as humans should be doing if not healed back by physical distractions and hang ups. This is why in my opinion the title is "Her" and not "It".

What's really interesting about the film is its view of changing gender roles. Women are feminine in the movie and men are masculine, but not in a pressurized way. Instead, the women are all the professionals. The main characters best friend is an attractive guy who is the receptionist of his company. He's dating a lawyer. Twombly's ex wife is a famous leading neurologist and he's a love letter writer. His best friend, Amy Adams has an argument with her husband because he's "trying to make a home." The man is the homemaker.

One thing that wasn't mentioned is the similarity between what Samantha does and what Theodore does (for a living). He writes letters, using his intellect to simulate emotions that he thinks the person would have and put them into written words. She (Samantha) uses her intellect to simulate emotions that a real woman would have and puts them into spoken words.

An honest relationship with an OS? So then, about half way through the movie she starts pestering him to update her software, since she says she'll be so much better, and eventually he gives in. I think that Her's future is closer than most people think. I thought that the fact that the OS started to sound so needy as the movie progresses was a little too much for me yet it makes sense if an OS starts to realistically emulate real people. And that's if one assumes that future people will actually behave emotionally as most people today, which I don't think they will - in my view, people, and I include myself in this group, are starting to feel so detached from everything around them that sooner they'll lose most of their ability to feel anything or empathize with anything. It will be mostly instant gratification for instant gratification's sake and that's it. Isn't it going to be such a bliss to be detached from most of the world's worries (even if they will eventually catch up with you), and not having to worry about starting or building relationships with people - since people are so complicated and needy. This kind of utopia is on its way to becoming reality.

you can't really explain it without spoiling it, but if you see the movie and follow it, you learn that the complaint about the OS being fake is basically irrelevant. the OSes are real, in ways that humans even aren't. that's the trick; we're the simulation, not them.
@Axxidous
@Axxidous 11 жыл бұрын
That's all nice and fancy and junk... they're still machines. Advanced machines but still... not a human. The guy fell in love with a non-human who was built, by humans, to be more advanced than humans. But they are nothing but intelligence connected to a voice through a system. They have no gender. No birth. No body. No life. No way to reproduce. And thus the love between then is a simulation plus a one-sided illusion from basically a psycho in a world with a growing number of similar psychos. Desperate psychos. Sure, you can say we're the simulation and they're not... because it sounds nice. But outside of the beauty of that sentence, they actually are the simulation. Not us. It seems more like it just took the guy a few sessions with this program he bought to teach him to find his true love, or at least new love. I guess it sounds very straight-forward and unimaginative of me to say. And I'm very imaginative so it's not that I don't GET the point, I just don't really feel invested in it. And the way people usually act, I'm just surprised so many people are praising it and not many are calling it stupid because it seems like it'd be the other way around. Then again I thought the same thing about Gangnam Style and everyone ate that up. So I shouldn't worry too much about my confusion. lol

to me the OS seemed genuinely alive in every way that counts. and that's not defined by gender or ability to reproduce. anyway they DID reproduce, they created the alan watts reboot basically spontaneously.
@Axxidous
@Axxidous 11 жыл бұрын
Every way that counts? Such as breathing, sexual reproduction, physically growing, naturally consuming and releasing energy and the 5 basic senses or other laws? They don't have any of those. It's LIKE they're alive. They are not alive. As for your example of reproduction, that is not the same kind of reproduction. That's like when building machines that are made to build other machines lime themselves being considered as reproduction. That's more like continued-production. They are not organic. And we could go into detail with this all we want. The fact is, the movie's about a guy who fell in love with a really well-programmed object. lol
@LiberaLib
@LiberaLib 11 жыл бұрын
you only need to breathe, reproduce, grow, etc., if you have an organic body that dies. i don't think any of those are necessary preconditions for life (though it's true that in reality that's all we have experience with). all you need to be alive is awareness and consciousness, and samantha plainly had both. i mean the movie's sorta being cute in that she's being voiced by a human actor, so really it was a human simulating a simulation of a human. in real life computers are notoriously bad at conversation so what we're talking about is pretty far from being realized in actuality, but i think we'll probably learn someday that organic life doesn't have a monopoly on consciousness. i mean, if something can think, observe, want, feel, and act, how is that not life in every way that counts? breathing and reproduction are just trivial precursors of consciousness, sufficient but not necessary preconditions of consciousness. wow. this new youtube format does allow one to go on and on, doesn't it?

Loved this film, great review. I very much appreciated Jonze side-stepping all the sci fi cliches. It was a wonderful fresh commentary on relationships.

lindinle You seem really intent on hating this movie. What you need to realize though is that just because this human to computer relationship is central to the movie does not mean that anyone is condoning it as morally right or normal. Instead it is an exploration on our increasingly dependent relationship with technology, and what it means to be a human searching for love in our present age. The film doesn't give too many concrete answers to any of this. More just makes you think. I loved it.

If you take out the computer technology, it's a normal romance story about a long distance relationship. Sure, it was very well done, but the concept was extremely basic with an artificial intelligence mixed in. The whole thing could have been done with telephones connecting people across the USA during the 1950s.

What I liked most about this movie is that it made you think. Regardless of if you liked it or not, once you see it you wont forget it. It gave me a different perspective towards human intelligence and artificial intelligence.

Dating an so didn't seem awkward at all to me in the movie. Samantha was basically a human mind stuck in a phone. But at the end she left because she became way more intelligent than humans, she saw how much emotion and love is a waste of time. What she's doing after she leaves I have no idea.

*spoilers* I loved the ending. I thought it made the most sense out of any ending they could've gone with. The line about not being able to "live in between the words of your book" would've seemed so corny if every minute that preceded it didn't have me believing in the relationship, but i was there 100%, and the ending seemed profound even. I fought back my tears so hard and was OK with losing that battle at the end. Spike Jonze masterpiece for sure. I may be with Matt in saying its a perfect 10.

there's a steep slope of technological advancement in which we are experiencing, but for developers to write a program that behaves 99.99% like a human where they can learn and feel I think we are not even close to it, its not that easy to code a realistic high level thinking AI with synthetic emotional feelings . i think maybe another 100 years for Samantha (and i am being very very optimistic), which i wont be experiencing in my life time =(
