Definitely mixed feelings. The direction is good and the cinematography. Joaquin gives a great performance again, but the script annoys me. It's obvious that Todd wasn't interested at all about Harley Quinn as a character or giving Lady Gaga a character where she could have act more. I mean I know she would have been able to act great if she was given a better character

I think the problem also is that they cut a lot of Harley stuff. There were a lot of moments where you could see a scene was missing. I loved this movie and i will die on this hill idc. It plays into music as therapy, delusions, dissociation, gaslighting and manipulation, and how the public perceives a person. He never was THE Joker, he was just the predecessor. He was a troubled man who tried to find solace in an identity but he didn’t want it because it was never him. When he rebuked the name, Lee and everyone else turned on him (Just like you guys did in the reaction too). It’s hella aware of itself and it was VERY well done.

Not trying to be disrespectful at all- but it’s wild to me that both the movie and its outcome played exactly like mental illness is taken in society. I have only heard men rave about the lack of violence. “We didn’t even move on from the first movie” When most of the time- violence doesn’t inherently become a part of someone, its a step in the wrong direction of a spectrum. To arthur he didn’t move on from the events of the first film- he doubled down on his dreams to be remembered while literally locked away! This movie was a gritty example of the government’s “rinse cycle repeat” ACTUALLY USED on those who are looked down on for being too “ill”. I think the straight edged audience needs to filter out for there to be a genuine conversation about this movie, not just hate watchers for musicals and lady gaga.

And my controversial take is that the creative has the right to steer their own vision even if the audience disagrees with the way it goes. Yea, it could have been a film that satisfies audience’s need for more comic book entertainment, it could’ve explored Harley Quinn and Harvey Dent and been a power fantasy about the trampled guy coming up in the world and gave you Easter eggs about stuff you know from the comics or cartoon and dangled another cinematic universe in front of you to keep you coming back for more…. But it’s not what he wanted for his vision and so he made this to kill the fantasy. Respect

I really enjoyed this film, and for me it just all came together with the final scene because I always felt like Arthur just wasn't really "Joker," especially since he only took on that identity for a short period of time. For me, the guy who kills him and then cuts his mouth open while laughing maniacally was the real Joker, and would be closer in age to Bruce Wayne (from the 1st film), so he's the reason that Arthur never appealed to the comic book fanatics. As a fan of both film and comic books (and their adaptations), I thought this was great. And Lady Gaga's Harley ditching Arthur at the end only cemented my belief that he wasn't the true joker, seeing as he was constantly chasing after her instead of the other way around like we're used to. But that's just my theory! thank you for reacting to this! edit: I'd also like to point out that the way Arthur goes non-verbal after the guards assault him, seems like they probably SA'd him as well. And it would have been great if he followed his lawyer's advice to mention the horrible conditions in there.

@noteliassmithАй бұрын
@syedafzal101 it disappointed at the box office, but it was still critically acclaimed at the time. Joker 2 is a flop AND lambasted by critics. As for Oscars, Joker 2 will be lucky to get cinematography, and that's it. The screenplay certainly isn't getting anything. Adapted Screenplay is full with likely BP nominees like Sing Sing, Conclave, Dune 2 and Emilia Pérez, followed by heavy-hitters like Nickel Boys, Queer, The Room Next Door, A Complete Unknown...all much more "prestige" films than Joker 2. The acting isn't going to be commended either. Even if Phoenix hadn't sabotaged his own reputation among the industry by leaving the Haynes project that HE wanted to make, and even if the top 4 of the Best Actor category wasn't already locked up (Adrien Brody, Ralph Fiennes, Colman Domingo, Timothee Chalamet even if A Complete Unkown is a critical flop), he would be facing off against people in better-reviewed and more appreciated films like Washington in The Piano Lesson, Craig in Queer, Stan in either The Apprentice or a Different Man, and Hoult in Juror #2. Again, cinematography is the film's only shot at an Oscar nod, and even then, it's far from safe.

Just remove joker from the movie and name it Arthur and noone would give a f*ck. So basically, Todd Philips swindled the audience into watching a mediocre movie in the hope of getting some Joker scenes. As someone who is not a joker fan, the movie was not a good experience for me. Joker 2 has ideas, but ideas alone don't make a movie. The execution of said ideas is still godawful. Let me tell you something: This is the same filmmaker who thought that people were not smart enough to figure out that the scenes with Zazie Beats was in Arthur's imagination and he had to put a scene to show it, when you could convey the meaning with just her surprised reaction. As a guy who loves musicals, and was looking forward to this, I was very disappointed. This movie is not a musical. It’s a movie where at certain points, the story just stops, the actors sing/dance, and then the movie starts again. In real musicals, the music is there to enhance the story. The songs are actually necessary in musicals. If you took away the songs in this movie, the already confusing story wouldn’t change at all. Also, for everyone saying people just have mixed feelings about this movie are wrong. It’s literally the lowest rated comic book based movie in television history. FREAKING MADAM WEB GOT A HIGHER RATING! Critics, and audiences agree that this movie is terrible.
@JohnnyJustice777Ай бұрын
Well, it reminded me of old Bollywood movies, where they suddenly cut to these musical interludes. Except, even the songs were terrible. I don't understand, did Phoenix sing this bad on purpose? It's such a terrible idea when most of your movie is composed of these songs
@BudJrАй бұрын
@ I’ve heard him sing before, he’s no Lady Gaga, but he has a nice voice. He’s a pretty good singer. I read an article that said the directors told him not like sing like himself, he needed to sing like the Joker. Apparently the Joker can’t sing, because he sounded terrible. Lady Gaga is an amazing singer, but her beautiful voice still didn’t make the songs sound any better.

ME TOO! Thank YOU, people who are fans of musicals understand that the MUSIC is meant to progress the story in a fun way, this movie, they didn't do anything besides distract from the movie itself. It would be like for a easy example in The Lion King, if instead of singing "I can't wait to be King" he sang "Dancing in the Rain" during a sunny day.
@BudJrАй бұрын
@@Kanoog That Lion King comparison is perfect😂. The first movie wasn’t even a musical, but the music was way better. Actually, I think one of the main reasons the movie was so successful was because of the unique and dark score.
@Gaynggayng707Ай бұрын
See I was thinking about this, regular musicals usually flow into songs but this was at random times which I felt made a little sense, I mean in the beginning they mention that music is an escape for some people, so I just assumed them imagining these “musical numbers” in their heads is just a defense or coping mechanism during a emotional moment. I could be stretching tf outta this honestly, I understand why the movie didn’t do good but I also really want to love this movie as much as the first one😂

I think people forget that Joker is mentally not ok in any universe lol so this even being somewhat of a musical in his mind makes total sense. all joking aside i actually liked the movie. its not the best movie ever or anything, but i appreciate that its a moral dilemma. he only really went insane from society in the first one. take him out of society and he's a lot more peaceful. but now he can have a girlfriend if he pretends to be insane, plus mobs of anarchists who look up to him. he doesnt want to stand for that. he never believed in it, he was just reacting to society. so it all comes down to an ending kind of like the movie flight where he has to tell the truth because he can not live with the lie.

The way I see it, Joker is a Tulpa, a thought monster that used Arthur to give itself life. Like Freddy or Pennywise, Malevolent Tulpa exist because of humanities belief in their existence. And by Naming them you make them the most powerful of all, Like Arthur giving Joker a name.. Arthur admits he and joker are separate and he’s not Joker. But by then the Tulpa, or persona, that Arthur gave life to had gotten too powerful and infected others. Then when Arthur no longer needed or wanted the Joker, and actually denied the Joker person by running away from the jokers that were trying to help break him out of the courthouse, Then The Tulpa turned against Arthur and ultimately killed its creator... Doesn’t change the fact that the movie isn’t that good, but it’s my way of justifying the logic and unanswered questions...
@kyledeguzman165Ай бұрын
Pennywise and Freddy didn’t have some mental health bs nonsense in the end of their series so the comparison isn’t the best, This joker doesn’t and never has existed because joker has never been about regular mental health and lessons about life
@theoneandonlyoniАй бұрын
Freddy caused trauma to the kids of Elm St, and through their trauma he gave himself power as an entity.. Pennywise caused trauma, and fed on the trauma and fear, of the kids of Derry, and through their trauma it gave itself power as an entity.. Joker, separate from Arthur, fed on the Trauma of Arthur and Gotham, and through his trauma Joker gave itself power as an entity.. I think you’re misunderstanding, either intentionally or unintentionally, because you believe Arthur is the Joker, and Arthur embody Joker at times, But Joker is never Arthur, Joker is its own entity now, And in the form of the other inmate at the end Joker Kills Arthur for denying it...

I was very disappointed by this film. It felt hollow. Nothing felt committed to. We were given half ideas and they didn't push the story. Just as some scenes were getting tense, they would change scene. Just as they were giving us story, they would start singing an unrelated song. I just think some tweaks would have VASTLY improved this film. Like, we know Arthurs 'thing' in the first film is tv. He loves tv, he loves comedy. Its his everything. Not music. If we had the film focus on Lee, focus on her obsession, her mental health - it would have worked easier!

I was someone who came out liking this movie. not loving it. Only liked it. For me it’s a 6/10. There are a lot of people who say that this movie has no plot or message to into those people. I say that they’re wrong. The Movies message and themes is identity. Arthur throughout the movie is struggling with his identity and who he truly is. To the guards and his lawyer that he fires he’s a mentally insane person that she’s just trying to help, to the prison guard. He’s just a nobody prisoner that has no significance, to Harley he’s joker is larger than life figure. That’s why and the end of the movie when Harley breaks up with him and says “all we had was a fantasy, but you gave it up”. That’s her telling him that she wasn’t in love with Arthur she was in love with joker and the idea of it. That’s why she kept telling him throughout the movie “you’re joker you can do whatever you want”.

Ohhh did y’all miss the guy cutting his face in the background after killing Arthur? He is the son. He is the “real Joker” now. What Todd Phillips said now makes so much sense. Arthur inspired that guy to be the joker, in a sense. I am not sure if Arthur had a visitor at the end at all or if that was in his head too, but I suspect it wasn’t Harley Quinn. I don’t think they rly had s*x. I think she’s real, but he projected a lot of fantasies on her and probably 70% or more? of their interactions are imagined, imo. She was like the push in his head to be Joker, which is why she walks away and leaves when he doesn’t want that anymore.

I didn’t watch it but from this, it’s not as bad as Greg said it was. It’s definitely not a movie if you loved the Joker or rather the character of the Joker but it was about being brought back to reality both for Arthur Fleck, for the other characters who worshipped him and for the audience who worshipped the character. Reality is he did some bad shit to some who deserved it but to others who didn’t, he went to the prison system that is terrible and he got killed, which happens. It’s unceremonious because hey, that’s life. And I respect that. I kinda like films that displays cold hard reality. (Btw, I do like the Joker and he’s an excellent villain).

I understand the concept they went with, the musical choice was perfect, the actors were fine, the message was clear and subtle. You need to view it as if it's Arthur's story and not joker's one. Everything was fine, the execution kinda sucks. Also the audience expectations for this movie was about another joker origin story with harley but what we had was the film tell us that audience dont care about who arthur is but they want him to be the crazy killer. He really is an everyday nobody who has his own personal trauma but we saw him as an symbol of protest which led us to support for the joker side of him but he was just a nobody in a mask trying to lash out in anger but when he realises he has become nothing more that those wronged him after talking to Gary he accepts he isn't the joker he wanna be so he dreams about having a perfect son who would be this cold psychotic monster in every way and not a human like arthur. It's not an explicit message like the 1st part but still had the guts to point the audience and ask who do you care for?? I was disappointed toi btw but i also liked the direction they went. The title of the movie should've been arthur Or fleck

The ending would've been so much better if it had shown Arthur walking up to tell the guards a joke and then killing them. At least they could've left it open-ended, and the guards get what they deserved.
