Dave, you won't remember me, but I remember a Sunday brunch at the old Dakota location in Bandana Square and your trio in approx. 1998-99. Bass, flute, guitar. You came by our table, and I sang "When I Fall in Love" to my girl, with your group. You gave me your name which I scratched on a piece of paper and still have. Are you in the Twin Cities area still?

Herb was the one who made me realize I could play swing guitar. I've seen him live a bunch, and attended his guitar seminars. I had to learn his version of this tune. I'll always be grateful to him for getting me started. Wish we could have jammed a few tunes together, but alas, it was not to be. RIP my friend. You were a classic.

I met Herb when he was touring with Barney Kessel in the early 80's. He played like my teacher so it was easy to figure out what he was doing. He asked me why the hell I didn't play American music, why didn't I play jazz. Well I do now. I really enjoyed your video

I'm sure that luck played it's part but you are a classically trained, dedicated and unbelievably versatile musician. You deserved that luck. It's Valentine's Day - Happy Birthday, Bass Man.

I don't care for most blues guitar..But Herb had a way with blues where it worked within the framework of pop or jazz tunes that gave it an originality I always liked..His approach to blues was different than the common blues guitar.. it had a sweetness, a New Orleans kind a lilt to it...

What a fantastic guitarist, and what a pleasure to see how the solid bass player enjoys himself. I'm trying to copy the song chord by chord...learning from the best!
