As I've gotten older, my taste in watches has gotten so specific and stringent that it is naturally curing my watch acquisition disorder...feels good.

I can really relate to this topic since I have experienced the same like you Jeffrey, I had flu recently and during this time I wasn't for much stuff and then I started reflecting on my life., started to visualise what my life would look like in 20 years because of my watch addiction..one week later I sold all of my watches except one cuz I realized how much I was missing out in my life because this addiction. Literally, we are wasting our time on something that should just tell you time. Those short term happiness which comes from these dopamine shots when we get this cool new watch is actually making us like zombies in a way. Ok, we all now it's not that black&white, watches are like you said special and beautiful piece of jewlery but they are robbing from you in terms of what you can be and what you can acomplish and be in your life because you are constantly thinking about watches. It's pretty much like any other addiction. So, you are not alone in this way of thinking. I cannot say for sure that I'm pass my addiction but I'm for sure more determined to fight it more than just let myself in.

I'm trying to remind myself that I can admire something without desiring it. My watch collection is definitely amateur. 2 G-shocks, a Citizen Promaster, a Steinhart explorer homage, and a quartz seiko that my dad gave me in 1996. I am nearing retirement and am considering a Black Bay 54 to be my GADA. Most days though, I realize that I could never buy another watch and be just fine. Glad you survived the flu. Maybe that flu shot was the difference...

Nice shirt McMahon. I think alot of watch enthusiasts make idols of that. "next watch". Dooming them to constantly be looking to that watch for a sense of contentment that's never coming. Another profound revelation I heard recently is "comparison is the enemy of contentment"

This video hits home. Im currently recovering from spinal surgery on my neck and seriously contemplating ejecting 95% of my collection. I’m only 5 years into my journey and went hog wild with cheaper seikos and homage watches with a couple nicer ones. Now at 42years I’m looking to seriously down-size and upgrade. I realized I needed to do this when I was only interested in no-date watches because I couldn’t be bothered to change the date every time I changed a watch.

Praying that you continue to recover form flu. Looks like this experience helped refocus certain priorities and values. It’s pretty cool you are able cut the watch collection down to 5.

Well, I’m 75 and have 12 watches, (started my collecting journey in 1987) so I can’t decide whether I’m hopeless or because it’s been so many years I’m doing well,..I just don’t know… But one things for certain and I agree, It’s great to be alive! 😉

Broad integrity and self-discipline. The cornerstones of all the other virtues of a good life? I've long had this idea that one of the deepest tests of the calibre of mans character. Is does one grow old with grace, and die with dignity, and good humour. However ghastly, long drawn out, and unenduringly painful the process may become. My grandparents were the war generation. The courage I saw displayed during difficult terminal illnesses was sobering and humbling in the extreme. Thought provoking as always.

I’m good with a collection of 12 watches, given that I commonly switch watches about 2x per day; means that I wear each timepiece once or twice in a typical week.

Decide the number for your collection, be it 5 or 10, or 15... And then "1 in and 1 out rule"... I also found watches I was passionate about a couple years ago sometimes lose their attraction to me, and so I move on. If you have a system, I think it's managable... If I see the latest shiny thing, I think, "Ok, what then is leaving the collection to make room for it?" Sometimes I get the new shiny thing, other times, I say "No, cannot do it, not ready to part with anthing atm."

I found a great deal - about 50% off - on the yellow textured dial Bulova Marinemaster..yes, it is a high beat quartz...but it is really gorgeous on the wrist. Just keep in mind we cannot take our stuff with us. Buy what you like not what you think you need.

You'll do fine with 5 or less watches. The hobby is addictive and exciting, but I think I just bought my last one (despite being younger than you). Against all convention, I bought an Apple Watch after a former coworker's sudden death. I bought the thing for monitoring reasons and wear it on the right wrist, and a proper watch on the left. Sure, the AW will serve me who knows how many years before it's obsolete and will then have to get another one (or an Apple Ring if they ever make it). But what I really want to do is take it all down to two or three watches and that's it. Earlier this year I sold several watches, so the process has begun. It's been fun.

Jeff I have 4 watches in my collection and it’s killing me. This wasn’t a problem until I got a submariner, now I can’t seem to wear anything else, I haven’t taken it off in a month, not even to sleep, shower, or workout. I stare at my Marathon GSAR, Tudor Pelagos FXD, and Omega Seamaster and feel terrible that they aren’t getting worn.

There is a song called jar of hearts. Lyric - you're gonna catch a cold, from the ice inside your soul. Bitterness has to be guarded against, it's a natural progression of man when he has seen too much. We were only ever meant to live until around 50.

- I’ve been told the medical community missed the mark at formulating the flu shot this year for the proper variant. They make an “all variant” version but only give it to seniors due to cost. I’d pay to get the all variant shot. Had flu last Dec and it slammed me!
