How Has the Seiko Tuna SBBN049 Affected My Collection?

Does the broad, brawny, sapphire Tuna SBBN049 push some of my other watches out of the collection? Are aluminum bezels a problem? McMahon faces these high-stake questions in today's episode.

It’s absolutely hilarious to me that Seiko enthusiast dislike this one compared to the previous gen. Price is a consideration, sure, and I quite like the old marine master text. But imagine if THIS model was the “older” model with more classical/historical hand shape and lume plots, and then they changed it to the SBBN031 style hands, lume markers, and hardlex. People would be losing their shit. You can’t win, enthusiasts will ALWAYS nitpick haha.

Personally, I'd really miss having a Tuna with a dial that reads 'Marinemaster'... I could never sell mine for that reason alone, but I definitely see the appeal in keeping a lean collection. Best of luck - excited to see how you decide! Cheers!

The 049’s a beauty, but it’s missing what makes the 033 and 031 more desirable.. ‘MARINEMASTER’ I’ve owned an 031, and two 033s. Sold them all and bought a Doxa 300. Like it a lot..

I never bought any of the previous versions as although overall I loved the watches I either didn't like the strap options, or the mismatched bezel colour one-hard-coated material, or the easily scratched & reflective hardlex dome, or the shiny shroud, or the nasty updated hands. Delete as applicable depending on model number. I don't care for manufacturers slapping a name all over a watch either, the Prospex 'X' branding does for me and gives a cleaner look to the dial. You may as well have 'Tuna' or even 'Divers Watch' on there, tacky. Everyone has their own tastes and I totally get some people like the previous style\branding. So when Seiko released the 049 that fixed all these issues I jumped at it. It's the one I was waiting for and perfect in every way. I've actually got mine on an endmill also as I find it the most comfortable watch bracelet I've ever worn, it edges the original for wear-ability so I can let the slight color match slide. Mine's a keeper.

Have the SBBN 033. One of the best tunas ever. And is the last of the lot which carries the Marinemaster moniker on the dial. The new one while good it way higher in price and out of my wheelhouse- though I prefer the 033 any day.

Okay I got it I watched this like always to the end! This is the plan, get rid of the 065(black) because that clashes with the 125, that way you have the 125 profile and you have the lume of the scion blue. Done ✅

Honestly, I thought yours had a ceramic insert, don't they? Anyway, its hardened steel bezel action is better than a ROLEX, imo. Also, AR Is only applied to the inner side of one of the most beautiful black dials under the clearest crystal you've ever seen, dude. It's so you, dude. I love that it's so under the radar, too.

Great trade, the new sbbn is much better. Brushed shroud, better hands, better indices, sapphire glass. Only thing that's worse is X instead of marinemaster, but overall big improvement. Keep both tunas! They compliment each other and you will regret selling the 031.

Did I miss a video where you talked about selling the Tudor Black Bay? Where did it go? I’d sell the Hardlex Tuna or put it on a rubber strap. New sapphire tuna would would be perfect if they put the lines pointing to the center of the dial on the cardinal hour markers. The price of the new quartz tunas is insane for a 40 year old quartz movement. You should have kept the Seiko Transocean SBDC047. If I didn’t have a small wrist I’d have bought one of those (probably the black dial). That’s one of the most under appreciated Seiko’s ever made.

This 049 is really nice Jeff. I have the 31, 33 and 45 and they're all keepers for me. I was gonna sell the 31 when I got the 45 but they're different enough to keep the 31. That said, I like the 45 more than the 31. You can appreciate the dial more without all the reflections and I like the bezel insert more. The hands are different but I do like the old arrow handset just as much. I find them more legible. The Marinemaster text is a non-issue for me. I now have my eyes on my exit tunas: the 1000m 029 and 047. I promise they'll be my last tunas but history tells me that the winds of time seem to erode the promises of the watch collector. I'll do my best. Enjoy your new tuna, it's sweet.

As much as I love the 033, I need to have sapphire, so I'm okay not having it. No watch is perfect, of course, but I suspect I sold dozens of Monsters because deep down I wanted sapphire.

As an owner of the SLA033, I hope that's the one you get, dude. It's can be had for just $2600. Think about it, man; 49.7 lug to lug, 45 mm diameter SEIKO's super hard coating was applied to the stainless steel bezel as well as the case. Apparently, it hardens the steel over 400 Vickers - mine still looks brand new and I wear it every day.

Don't sell the SBBN031! That thing is now a collector's item. If anything, get rid of that Frogzilla thing. Pay someone to take it off your hands if need be. Better yet...arrange for a trip to the Mariana Trench, then accidentally drop it over the side. Alternatively, go on a tour of a mine. When you get to the deepest part of the mine, dig a deep hole, put the Citizen in, refill the hole, then ask for the mineshaft to be physically sealed and then for the pumps to be turned off so the mine floods. That thing is HIDEOUS.
