@@bradster1200 Two reasons: 1) Nissan had the focus of Cummins for building a brand new diesel for half tons... either an exclusive contract at the time and/or more lucrative than what Ram wanted to fork up 2) FCA became a thing after Chrysler Corps's bankruptcy proceedings, so naturally Fiat wanted to use their own diesel Remember that in 2013, the half-ton diesel market didn't exist, so a lot of uncertainty came with any investments into such. Other market macro pressures like increasing emissions regs in U.S. and a slow economic recovery didn't help. It took Ford and GM almost five years to finally compete in this space, lol.

Great video! Thanks guys. Can't wait for those MPG numbers!! VM Motori designed this engine with vans and small trucks in mind, not strong, capable 1/2-ton American pick-up trucks like Ram 1500, hence no integrated exhaust brake. GM has a clean-sheet design (with specifically Silverado/Sierra 1500 in mind), so integrated it comes natural. Why Ford didn't do it? Not sure, lol. I'm guessing because the focus was fuel economy rather than max tow, as well as keeping price down? An exhaust brake adds weight, complexity, and cost, and generally in the 1/2-ton segment, a trailer brake controller is all that's needed to take care of downhill braking needs. If necessary, downshift these trucks until you get some decent natural engine breaking, i.e. 3-3.5K RPM in the light-duty diesels and 4-4.5K RPM in the big gassers. Pretty much all your modern gas engines have full fuel shut-off for no-throttle, decelerating conditions. It doesn't sound like, but don't let the engine sound fool you. ;)
@scottandrews48224 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised that you don't cross your safety chains where they connect to the hitch. It is better to cross them, so that if the trailer does become disconnected, the chains will form a "basket" for the front of the trailer. Just a good safety idea 💡.

Until they address the problems of mileage dropping off since the recalls on the 2014-16 eco diesels, I won't consider buying one...if they are not going to take care of those complaints, then they won't be taking care of mine either...Do you anticipate doing a video on the improvements FCA has done on those earlier models to satisfy those customers? Thanks!

Exactly. Once my truck is out of warranty, it's getting traded in for something other than a Ram. Test drove my truck with 2 miles on it, signed the purchase paperwork with 8. Loved my truck until the V08 recall. It's now officially the biggest piece of shit I've owned as far as performance and I absolutely hate the truck now.
@C10sRule5 жыл бұрын
Not 100% of the retuned trucks were negatively affected by the tunes, in fact way less than half were affected. The problem is, those owners don’t speak up! Everyone, I predict the vast majority on here have never owned or driven the previous diesel and go off of these comments, thinks it affected every truck. It didn’t. I have two friends, both with the previous version, couldn’t tell if there was any difference. The fuel economy is the same, everything feels the same. I have driven both of their trucks before and after, and I can’t tell the difference. I didn’t get a chance to check the fuel economy myself, but I trust these guys, known them a long time and they are honest guys. I won’t follow the rumour mill. I believe there are guys that had/have problems out there and if you are one of them, I really hope they make things right for you. I just haven’t met anyone, or heard of anyone, within my family or friends that had had issues. Big family and large circle of friends, and their friends and families. The problem is real, but nowhere to the extent the forums and TFL (unfortunately) would lead you to believe. Just my experience her in ranch country.

@@C10sRule The owners have spoken, you're clearly not on any of the eco pages on fb where well over 90% of people have done nothing but complain and many having their trucks sit in the shop with codes that won't go away. Ram has told everyone the same thing they announced. There will be no change in fuel nor performance and it a flat out lie. I've lost 4mpg hwy, I've lost around the same in city. Out of 10 people who got the tune, I would bet 9 of them are complain about the lag and being afraid to pull out into traffic. My dealership has even started that everyone that came in for the flash has came back complaining about mileage and performance. Out of the hundreds of V08 post on the FB pages, maybe 15 people at most have said they are getting better mileage, BUT they still have noted the huge delay in acceleration. Obviously 0-60 in a half ton diesel will never be anything someone is going to brag about or even care, but when you lose a solid 3.5 seconds to 60 after a flash, that says there is an performance change.

I can't help but cringe when you said that under 1300 lbs payload is good for a fully loaded half ton. Ram has stepped WAY up in its game and they have a whole lot to be proud of, but their payload continues to be a joke. Before getting a 1-Ton, I had '17 Silverado 1500 fully loaded 4x4, 6.2L, sunroof, and everything else that kills payload and it could still carry a gnats ass shy of 1800 according to the VIN plate. Ram is making an incredible product, but they have got to get their payload numbers up.

@@wgreenjr81 well when you buy a 1/2 pickup payload is WAY down on most people's list towing capacity is what people are looking for if you need more payload you need more truck and you also need to understand FTA regulates the maximum total vehicle weight to a set amount depending on vehicle class the diesel engine weighs more you are going to lose payload there is no way around it obviously the ram is heavier

Most crew cab truck buyers these days would be better served with a Camry. They don't haul, they don't tow...they just make the morning commute to the office. The manufacturers build soft suspensions to be nice and cushy. I agree, it's a sad situation for sure. No truck should cargo less than 18 or 20% of their maximum towing weight. Considering that tongue weights are 10 to 15% of the trailer weight, most 1/2 ton trucks right now are at least 400 to 600 pounds light on cargo. 1,290 may be good relative to other trucks, but is crazy on a truck that can tow 10,000 lbs or more.
