We tracked down the original Owner who is willing to work with us on getting a new Title (but will still take time because of the paperwork involved), but the Elderly Gentleman actually regretted ever selling and wants to buy the car back! I explained the situation to Tyler, and he graciously offered to return the vehicle. We hope to find Tyler another car, and one he will keep!

That engine is most definitely a Flat-12. Throwing V in there is incorrect. V angles can range dramatically, but once you get out to 180° it's a straight line......flat. I know Doug thinks that somehow the arrangement of the journals on the crankshaft comes into this, but it's simply incorrect. That's what the term boxer is for in a flat engine. V vs flat is determined by the arrangement of cylinders in the crankcase and has nothing to do with the crankshaft. This is and will always be a Flat-12. Doug's opinion here is not consistent with any engineering text or industry standard I've ever seen, and I've spent the vast majority of my career in the engine design and manufacturing field.

You guys are simply.... You get your facts wrong and show that to everyone on the internet. A180° V-Engine can be found in a lot of great sports- and racecars. It would have been easy to look it up "with all that internet and stuff". But since you don´t seem to get it, I did that for you: A V-Engine always features two rods on one crankpin, while on a boxer-engine, each rod will have it´s own. That´s it. Here is the wiki-artricle, picture on the right of the article shows the difference. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_engine

"A V-Engine always features two rods on one crankpin, while on a boxer-engine, each rod will have it´s own. That´s it." But that isn't true! The Ford Taunus V4 engine clearly violates your logic. Look up some crankshaft pictures. I guess we'd start calling that a boxer? There are countless other examples. This logic of thinking a crankshaft arrangement has anything to do with a term for the crankcase arrangement makes no sense. The crankshaft has nothing to do with Flat vs V! There is other nomenclature for the characteristics of a crankshaft (flat-plane, cross-plane, boxer, split pin, etc.). What you're stating is inconsistent with all recip engine engineering texts going back to the 1800s. Why are we trying to redefine this now?

The 512 TR was the best iteration of the "testarossa". It's engine was reworked extensively providing more power, and a broader torque curve, and the exterior styling was also refined into a more cohesive and handsome design. The larger wheels gave it better proportions, and they look modern when compared to the original ones. Unfortunately they are also commanding much better money and are definitely fewer on the market.

I don't recall any of the specifics about the awkward naming convention with this engine at all... but I'm assuming what he was speaking in reference to, was the feeling that this engine cannot technically be considered a "boxer" engine, and the idea that it was more along the lines of a "very wide angle" V engine. But like I said, I don't remember what the deal was with it. Whatever it should be called, I think he should have kept it ;)

@chrischaf
@chrischaf 4 жыл бұрын
@@spiker702 That sounds like it's along the lines of what I was vaguely remembering. I was, admittedly, reluctant to look it up again myself though... But that was in everyone's best interest, because every time I go looking up info/researching anything about engines -in reply to youtube comments- I always end up reading for like, 6 - 8 hours on the subject, and then -of course- I want to spend about 3 hours writing a reply containing all that I learned. And then everyone (nearly) dies from being exposed to the resulting massive wall of text, and I have to go into hiding for a while till the heat dies down, so I don't get my keyboard taken away for attempted murder. So, yeah, I decided *not* to pull the pin by going to look anything up this time ;P Have a Happy New Year! ~~^_^

The first Testarossa I saw was burgundy metallic in Palm Springs California in 1988. Older guy driving it said if you can beat it, it’s yours. The car was stunningly beautiful. I have since driven behind a few other Testarossa’s and they are quite wide compared to how short in height they are.

It's a flat 12, period. The crank has a non-traditional firing sequence for a boxer engine, but the cylinders are still opposed 180 degrees from each other, ergo it's a flat 12. That's been how engines have been classified for a long long time. Yamaha R1 motors aren't called V-inline fours. Mustang GT350 motors aren't called flat-V8s. They just have non-traditional crank layouts. *I call flat motors "boxer" because their range of motion will fit in a hypothetical box.* Anyone calling a Testarossa motor a flat V12 is just talking just for sake of hearing themself speak, or they're the type of person that likes to act as if they're the most knowledgeable person in the room because they think they know some...."quirk".... that no one else knows about.
@Exzachtly_ND
@Exzachtly_ND 5 жыл бұрын
Ferrari themselves calls it a V12. Its not just the firing order thats different, its that the Ferrari engine uses one crank pin per PAIR of cylinders. The Porsche and Subaru engines use one crank pin per SINGLE cylinder. This allows the Subaru pistons to reach top dead center at the exact same time, while the Ferrari pistons reach top dead center at the exact opposite time. This gives the V12 a very rhythmic appearance, and the boxer engine has the appearance of opposing pistons are, well, boxing each other. It has a completely different firing order from a boxer engine, because it fires in a completely different way, mechanically speaking. If you don't like it, email Ferrari, let them know they don't know how engines work.

The engine is a flat version of a 60° V12 Ferrari motor I THINK that's why a true Ferrari aficionado may be expected to refer to It this way?
@DIZAZZO
@DIZAZZO 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, I always say Flat 12, it's all about the shape of the engine, the firing order or the position of the pistons are just a detail, that you just need to read or be told about, it isn't something you know just looking at it in the engine bay.

I don't often read comments, but I am surprised by what I see here. I expected friendly car guys, not amateur psychiatrists, snarky references alleging dishonesty in your motives and finances, etc etc. To those people I have this to say: Get a life. Tyler does what he does because he enjoys it and it pays the bills. If you don't like that, then maybe YOU need to try doing yourself it rather than writing trashy comments. And to Tyler I say "Thank you". I don't like all your cars, I don't agree with all your decisions, but I'm sure you'd say the same about me and that's ok. I DO love your unique approach, and watching your videos brings me enjoyment. I wouldn't presume to analyze you or raise suspicions about your motives, because friends don't do that.
