Dave, great reviews that helped us decide for the Mazda. I was good for the new Mitsubishi or the Outback but the wife argued for more luxury. From that perspective the CX9 delivers for not much more money. Once I started driving the Mazda full time, I really began to love the driving dynamics of this SUV. Kids and Labrador necessitated a roomy vehicle but I like a sport sedan driving experience. I feel the CX9 provides the best and relatively most affordable SUV alternative. Fuel mileage has been a steady 17 mpg in the first 3500 miles. Bad but my neighbor reports no better with their new Acura MDX. After seeing the inside of the Mazda, he doesn't see he got much for the extra ten grand the Acura cost. Mazda has a sleeper here and I like not seeing them on every corner like the BMW's where we live. I've got a short 12 mile round trip commute so I can live with mileage but the Mitsubishi new Outlander was a close runner up. Keep up the entertaining reviews.

This is great for Uber. I just bought one. And that back seat is comfortable at least for 10 mins rides around town. I was very impressed in my test drive. Very well rounded vehicle. Love that the sec row can move forward and backwards. Looks brand new. Nice leather, fun to drive. It feels fancy without spending max money for some lux and extra space.

I have this now as a loaner while my 1997 MX-6 is being repaired! and the gas mpg is terrible in the CX-9!

Despite having a third-row seat, the Outlander isn't a CX-9 competitor or alternative. I believe the 2014 Durango V6 (8-speed AT) will be the best-in-class 7-seater SUV....but I'm still waiting to see the review(s) to support that belief.

I know that AWD is important in northern regions of the country, but the FWD CX-9 models actually gain about 3mpg in overall economy for buyers who don't required AWD. I have a 2012 CX-9 GT FWD and, even with a heavier than average right foot, I average just over 18mpg in mostly non-highway driving! I also drive from GA to SC (400 miles round-trip) at least four times per year with six passengers (including myself) and with the cruise set at 75mph, I stay close to 21mpg.

Get a Pilot. I get 20-21MPG Combined with a 2WD. No problems with adults in the 3rd row. You can sit three across in the second row. The trick to loaded the cargo area with the third row up is to open the rear glass. You can't do that in a CX-9. I noticed how the rear hatch twisted badly when the hatch stopped on the storage bin. Those HP & Torque numbers for 3.7L are low at best. 15-16MPG combined, that's what I've heard elsewhere as well. Those 20" don't help with MPG.

Is there a standard to classify sizes of cars other than EPA volume? This CX-9 is 76.2" wide and 200.2" long, that would be considered a LARGE SUV 5-10 years ago.

Great review! But I’ll be the first to say, I got a outlander as a rental. They are horrible! The reason I say that... the interior is so cheap feeling (very plasticy) everything rattled, VERY slow, and as far as resell they are next to worthless. To me The cx-9 is the best all around for the price.

don't buy a cx9 my 2011 has been in shop for over 2 weeks for power steering pump problems and still no sign of a repair (REALY MAZDA ) local dealer in Sault Ontario Canada isn't the what I would call helpful, and if you are wondering they all have same pumps from 2007-2014 and from the forums I'm not the first with this defect, maybe a letter to NHTSA would expedite matters. The cx9 does drive nice but there warranty if needed is sketchy.

The CX-9 is too heavy and the cx-5 a bit too small. And Don’t want less than 20mpg. I am shopping for a used mid sized SUV for under $15k and am now evaluating the repairs on salvaged titles of well rated vehicles. I wish the cx5 was slightly bigger or this thing lighter...4400lbs?!?
