As a ZL1 owner, I enjoyed this balanced review. Totally agree with the less characterful exhaust note. It’s just aggressive rough V8 noise, not particularly melodic. Voodoo exhaust note is amazing. Nearly peerless. Btw not sure if you meant GT350 had recaros while ZL1 didn’t, but if I’m not mistaken, ZL1 seats are also recaros.

Thanks for your note, glad you agreed since you're an owner and know the car well. I should have been more clear on the seats, simply meant the GT350 seats are significantly more bolstered, which is good and bad. To be honest I wasn't sure who made the ZL1 seats. I really like the ZL1 seats from a balance point of view, supportive but also easy to get in and out of from a daily driving perspective.

@@EatSleepDrive It is kind of odd what concessions Ford and GM made on their track versions of the cars. ZLE has hardcore suspension and chassis but the interior is as decked out as a regular ZL1, really geared more towards a comfy GT car. Ford likes a more comfortable suspension setup but then puts in hardcore seats and takes out the rear seats. GM is likely just looking at the Z/28 and the reactions to that car, so I can understand why they decided to go the middle road, but I think both the ZLE and the CFTP should be more extreme all around. Unless you are hitting the track every month, the base versions of the cars are the way to go.

Delphi, an arm of gm, developed what’s now called magneride from BWI, but gm as a whole was an early adopter regardless. I’m sure, or hope you’re not being critical as much as informing him but yea...there’s some non-gm/bwi innovation happening in aero applications that are very interesting too. Great review. I have the exact same ZL1 in blue also and I love it. Test drove GT350s and ZL1s several times each before I decided to go with Camaro. GT350 definitely sounds much better in stock form and that’s a huge plus, but I liked the Camaro more overall. Coming from ‘14 Mustang GT and ‘18 BRZ tS (sold both to get the ZL1), I wanted to have one car that combined power and handling. Couple things I really wanted were the cooled seats (I sweat when I drive fast) and rev matching transmission. No rev matching in the 350, and if you want cooled seats you have to pay a bit more to get the regular leather seats that have very minimal bolstering. Camaro does have heated and cooled Recaros standard. Interior is better and more modern too. Gauge cluster screen is much nicer. Visibility isn’t bad at all. It’s a sports car, not a commuter. The mirror is fine, I very rarely use the rear camera mirror. I didn’t get to test drive both cars on twisty roads but they felt similar overall. Camaro doesn’t have HD radio or subwoofer unfortunately. But the Bose system sounds good. Mustang has a sub (B&O) but doesn’t really sound like it has it. And then the price. My car had $67k sticker price and I ended up getting it for $60 plus taxes and fees (2020 model and I got it in October ‘19). Dealers here in Cali still have mark ups on GT350s but you could find one for MSRP I’m sure. Both are freaking awesome cars and you can’t go wrong with either one!

Really great review. Very fair and balanced. Had a C7 Z51 with magnetic ride, liked the car but wanted something a little more daily driver friendly in New England. I test drove a bunch of cars, ZL1, ZLE, SS 1LE, GT PP1, GT PP2, Hellcat, and GT350. ZLE, I loved the looks but the car was terrible on bad roads. Beat you up bad. ZL1 was much better, as well as the SS1LE. Drove the PP1 Mustang and really did not love it. Gearbox was (manual) was sloppy, the handling was disconnected when pushed hard. Just okay. PP2 was better but I still preferred the Camaros in terms of gearbox and handling. Then I drove the GT350. Game over. I owned lots of high revving cars including three generations of RX-7. Man. 8200rpm in a V8? Insane as well as the sound. To your point the GT350 has more character. Honestly I much prefer the styling and ergonomics. You can see much better out of the Mustang and I do have small kids that ride in the backseats and the GT350 is easier and more comfortable for them. The biggest difference is torque. The ZL1/ZLE is such a beast and feels so much faster than the GT350 below 5K rpm. It’s much more useable torque but you can get yourself in trouble more. I found myself driving like an asshat a lot more in the ZL1, because I was constantly flogging it. There is no bad choice here. Buy the car that speaks to you. I ended up in a barely used GT350. The prices have really fallen.

That’s the beauty of pushrod V8 Engines. They are straight torque monsters, and will make power ANYWHERE period.
@NatoriousGamePlay4 жыл бұрын
@Andrew V not really true. Stock engines have very small cams to meet emissions testing since the displacement is so large
@coyotetj46244 жыл бұрын
All of the reasons pushrod engines are still made are basically car companies like gm being cheap. They are cheaper to build, squeeze into smaller compartments and may help fuel economy but that is debatable. You won't see Ferrari or any high end performance cars rocking pushrods. Valve float kills most pushrod engines at high rpm unless they have a huge cam and valvesprings that wear shit out prematurely so the only reason GM is still doing it is simply cost yet they want more $$ from the consumer
@coyotetj46244 жыл бұрын
It also helps that any neanderthal can line up 2 dots on the timing chain so you don't have to be a graduate of MiT to assemble a Ls or LT.
@gtmike9164 жыл бұрын
Coyote TJ That is true, hell it takes only one to 3 days to learn how to build and repair pushrod engines really. That’s another thing I love about them. Cheap to maintain, engineer, produce, and upgrade all while still being very powerful and reliable.
@gtmike9164 жыл бұрын
Andrew V Not really, there are plenty of engines like the LS376, the LS7, and the LT4 that make peak power over 6,000 rpm. Sure they won’t have 8,000 rpm revs but they definitely have some top end. I’d go DOHC for anything 7,000 rpm or more to be honest though.

A couple years late with my comment, heh, but this was a very well-balanced and insightful review (btw I still own a 2018 Camaro and love it). Your points about the exhaust/engine sound, steering and rear cradle bushings were perfectly salient: the Voodoo has a special crankshaft and firing order that yields its absolutely unique "cross plane-ish" sound; the steering in the Camaro is a fixed ratio EPAS, not much can be done about that; and I fixed the wiggly bushings with an aftermarket BMR lockout kit that solved the issuse almost completely. Visibility is a non-issue especially with that rear camera mirror, and magnetic ride control is indeed superb. Again, you have a very good sense for what matters in these cars, great review, thank you very much.

Magnetic ride= thank you GM . And the “torque everywhere” is also very much due ( or almost all due ) to a pushrods engine .... and why GM has been so stubborn about sticking with it all these years.
@Bacon6764 жыл бұрын
One cam is still competing/beating with 4, I see no reason to change. It's mainly due to the head design, and how they spent their time (back in the day when they dropped the LS1) on how the flow is through the engine, rather than fuel efficiency. Couple with this almost archaic, yet very tried-and-true single in-block cam shaft pushrod designs, and GM has their formula for success in the consumer market. It's cheaper, smaller, lighter, can be adapted for several different material designs for trucks and cars, and it's obvious how GM has a great motor platform for their whole range.

The long gearing is a benefit on a road course bc you loose lap time by shifting more than you have too, and the LT4 torque helps you with that. The GT350 and 6th Gen Cam are the same dims roughly but Cam has a 3.5" longer wheelbase. The 1LE springs are what is stiffer, 2.5x stiffer than the rates in the ZL1. Those 1LE solid rear subframe cradle bushings are available from GM and can be mounted up to a ZL1. Screen angle must be for glare.....

Make the rear gear bigger if you wanna see what happens with shorter gears.

I'd like to answer your question regarding the infotainment 3 system's peculiar angle. I'm a 2020 Camaro owner, and I agree a vertical angle would be preferable like in the 2020 blazer. However, if you've ever sat in a 1967 Camaro, you would understand why the angle is there. It hearkens back to the original layout. You'll notice that it shares a similar shape and mimics the recessed angle at the bottom. The biggest knock against the Chevy Camaro is the interior or lack of interior space. When Chevy addresses this problem, especially back seat livability, it'll continue to sell behind the mustang and Challenger.

You guys say this but wait till all there are is electric cars anymore in another 50 years and cars cost an average of 90 grand or more. Let's be realistic. I'm sure no thought when cars were average of 5 grand that in 50 years or whatever it would be an average 35 grand. Some of the camaros sought after are auctioned for 100 grand or more. So never say never cause it can and might happen. Be a little more opened minded.

Didn't watch video yet but as a Chevy lover mustang owner. The mustang IRS is complete fucking shit.... Flex under heavy steering. You have to drop a grand for less wheel hop :/ it sucks, and on paper it shows the Camaro handles better without problems which in reality makes it feel miles better.

Lost it's track dominance? The ZL1, especially the 1LE with the MultiMatic DSSV suspension and very functional aero, dominate the track. Have you looked up the Nürburgring times? They are track cars first. Not as much focused on the strip.

@@cababy1296 www.caranddriver.com/reviews/comparison-test/a30540966/2020-ford-mustang-shelby-gt500-vs-2019-chevy-camaro-zl1-1le/ The jury is out. This article has the ZL1 1LE winning out in the 0-60 and just short of the GT500 in the 1/4 mile (.1 second difference). The ZL1 1LE has the MultiMatic DSSV, track focused, suspension and weighs 200 lb. less. They also like the steering feel on the ZL1 1LE better. On the Nürburgring, that allowed it to shave 13 seconds off of the ZL1 track time, even though the ZL1 1LE had a lower top speed in the straight because of the drag from the aero. No other Camaro, Corvette, or Mustang has this suspension...only the ZL1 1LE. I used to hate Chevrolet and swore I would never buy a Camaro but, after researching it, I bought a ZL1 and then I sold it 21 months later and got a ZL1 1LE. I did so because it was one of the baddest machines for the track, especially for the money. Even then, I'm not sure it would win out vs. the GT500 on the Nürburgring, but let's see. People are already saying it lost it's track dominance but I'm not sure that's been proven yet. In fact, I'm seeing some proof of the opposite. I'm not sure we'll ever know in regards to the Nürburgring because I don't think Ford will take the car there. The GT500 should win, though, because it's a much newer car and has 110 more HP (but keep in mind that the ZL1 1LE has 25 more lb-ft of torque...650 vs. 625). Then again, the GT500 is 200 lb. heavier and the suspension is inferior to the amazing track-focused ZL1 1LE suspension in the corners. That's how it goes, Chevy comes out with the gen 6 and it wins out and then a few years later Ford comes out with something. The GT500 should win in every measurement. So, for $30,000 more dollars and four years newer, I would hope the GT500 beats it out. That all said, a new Gen 7 Camaro ZL1 1LE or Z/28 would undoubtedly beat the GT500 for less money (if they ever come to fruition) but it looks like they're going to cancel the Camaro (again) after a couple more years of this generation. So I'm not sure we'll ever see a Gen 7 Camaro. Al Oppenheiser, the head of Camaro, has already moved to the electric car division. Camaro sales are tanking and gas mileage is poor (hurting their ability to hit EPA targets in a fiscally sound manner)...so it's just not worth it for them anymore. Finally, when we talk about comparisons between the ZL1 1LE and the GT500, it's almost apples and oranges with the price difference...but I hear you. The GT500 may win out on a particular track, but I don't think it will win out on all tracks because the ZL1 1LE will beat the heavier GT500, with the inferior cornering suspension...leaving the GT500 to make up for it in the straight. They will have to be long straights, though, based on the numbers I'm seeing from the early reviews. The ZL1 1LE is a lighter car, has more torque, and has a superior suspension. It has it's advantages. As for fun factor, a lot of people think the ZL1 1LE is a more confident and engaging track driving experience. I think both cars are amazing and I'm glad they push each other to the limit!

your right, apples and oranges when it comes to power, speed and what it sounds like...but.... price wise a regular ZL1 is prob cheaper than a GT350 (new). If you want to spend 90k for the GT500 and get 0.1 second off your 60 then thats all you.

Not enough feed back through the wheel. Well thats because its a muscle car and nowhere in history have they been straight track cars they have always been heavy high horsepower high torque straight line cars. As far as magnetic suspension well GM developed it for the luxury line known as cadillac and for the corvettes. Then sold rights for other manufacturers to use on their vehicles. But otherwise a good review
