The new Camaro ZL1 / 1LE is, fundamentally, the best of what GM's Performance division can do with the sixth-generation Camaro platform, while still having a road-legal vehicle. It features the 650 HP LT4 Supercharged 6.2L V8 found in the Corvette Z06, but with a much larger frontal area for better cooling and more consistent power. It has Multimatic Spool Valve dampers, like real race cars. You can only get it with a six-speed manual gearbox, and on the Nurburgring, it's faster than supercars not even a couple of years old. This car is, put simply, insanely fast. But does it work as a road car? Do I want one? Let's find out.
I was allowed to make this video thanks to the kind people at NBC Sports, who paid my airfare, hotels, and meals while in North Carolina. See my track test of the Camaro ZL1 as part of the "What Makes Fast" episode of /DRIVE (the TV Show) coming this September exclusively on NBC Sports!

Hearing the car pull away initially was amazing. I have always liked the sound of an American V8 engine. The sound alone sold me on viewing this video.

I'm a Ford guy, but the one thing I love about Chevy is that they are not afraid to drop huge and powerful V8 engines into their sports cars. I won't mention Dodge's vehicles because it's no longer an American company.

I love Dodge! I own a Hellcat. Yes, the Hellcat engine is built in Windsor, Ontario, but it is claimed by many as being a top built engine in quality and most measures. Actually, Windsor is a place many great engines were built. Ever heard of a Windsor 351? Ever wonder what kind of engine the Mustangs had years ago? Windsor engines? Lol....see my point. Dodge Challenger best looking muscle car by a mile in the U.S. period! But I'm a car lover and love all cars. Just keep it real. Don't leave out Dodges. Hellcat faster than all Mustangs and Camaros out right now in straightline. Not too shabby if you ask me, plus best riding and cruising car too.

I really, really like the GT350R, but if I had to choose one I would take the ZL1 1LE over it because it performs better in every aspect and does not look as cheap. What a beautiful machine, engine and design. And bless the supercharger whine it roars and sounds awesome!

the DRAMA in these cars is what draws me to them so much. I had an SS 1LE and loved it. ended up getting an M6 Gran Coupe which which was a beautiful, very fast and nice car to be in but I've missed the drama. Looking at my next trackable dad-car has a list of things like M3, Camaro ZL1 +/- 1LE, 911 992, or Cayman GTS or GT4. thankful to have such first world problems but despite the refinement of the german cars, they still lack the drama making the SS 1LE or ZL1 +/- 1LE so much fun.

The car doesn't rev as high as a Voodoo but it doesn't need to, it has mid range grunt with the supercharger. You can make it louder with headers and exhaust if that's what connects you to the car, which is probably what I would do first thing to let that giant engine breathe better. Keep up the great videos Matt!

Great video Matt, you have to remember that while the car is built in the USA the high performance versions are developed at the Nurburgring along side all the major German, British and most of the Japanese manufacturers. They are all looking over each others shoulders and all want to be able to show a really fast car to the opposition on the same track, it is what the Nurburgring was built for in the first place near 90 years ago. The real question is why are Ford and Chrysler not there?

I had an actual 2017 ZL1 until yesterday. Traded it in for a Viper. The ZL1 is a very nice car. Can't say anything negative about it, only that I got an automatic when a manual would have made much more sense. Only get the 1LE if you will actually go to the track regularly.

It doesn't stir Matt's soul but it gives him the giggles. Also the ZL1 walked the 350R when Motor Trend took them out on the track. Matter of fact, the Camaro SS 1LE that is 71hp shy of the Mustang 350R. Ran the same time as the 350R at Big Willow Springs with Randy Pobst behind the wheel. So without a doubt the ZL1 1LE would out run the 350R on a track. At the end of the day. It just comes down to what you like the most or whats your brand loyalty.

I know I'll be called a pussy, but I wouldn't want this much power with RWD. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for copious horsepower, as long as you can put it down effectively, which is easier and more confidence inspiring with AWD. In my opinion, this car is WAY too much for 99% of people, even enthusiasts, to handle. I think the 455HP SS 1LE is the one to get for most enthusiasts, and it's nearly half the cost of this monster.

Two best gm cars in my opinion. Ss 1le and corvette grand sport. Naturally aspirated power delivery. Extremely good handling and grip fits beautifully with the 455hp. I have the 1le. It is enough power on the road. You get into trouble very quickly. Cant imagine having 200 more hp. The handling with this power is the perfect combo. The grand sport must be even better!

Fury Trans Am LS1 Meh. I'm a Corvette fanatic, or was until GM made a supercharged Z06, the Z06 was like Porsches GT3, a high strung, normally aspirated track machine. Not only did the supercharger destroy the Z06 mission, but the car overheats so much, owners are suing, and those plastic aero bits looked like crap. No, another supercharged Corvette doesn't get me excited. At all. To be honest, I'd take a base C7 Stingray, or your Trans Am, over a supercharged Z06....
@TheReaperLSX
@TheReaperLSX 7 жыл бұрын
I understand Naturally Aspirated is definitely the way to go since its the engines true power and not being assisted with forced induction and your dealing with less issues cause superchargers tend to cause heat soak sometimes and crazy thing is the LT5 in the C4 ZR1 was Naturally Aspirated and was a monster and didn't need forced induction goes to show how important it was.

Do you drive on the ring to get to work? No? So who gives a shit lol. 15 seconds faster on a 12.9 mile long track with long straights and it barely beats the GT350R by 15 seconds? Given the fact that it's supercharged with 125 more hp and 200 more torque, not that impressive. And it's a newer car by 2 or more years. The GT350R beats the regular ZL1 in smaller tracks with more turns, like Willow Springs, if I recall correctly from Motortrend. Either way, both amazing cars, can't go wrong with either of them.

Aram Garibyan oops, your bias is showing. The gt350 beat the older gen 5 z28 and all you mustang nut huggers go crazy. The SS 1le keeps up with the gt350 and this zl1 kills it. and did you say only 15 seconds? wow you must know absolutely nothing about racing, that's a different league entirely.

oops, your lacking of basic English comprehension is showing. Clearly you didn't read what I wrote at all. Not to mention it's the ZL1 1LE which is what, 3 years newer? Compare the regular ZL1 and the GT350R, which have similar MSRP's, and you get less than a 3 second difference in lap times on the 'ring. Oh my God, THREE SECOND DIFFERENCE?!? GG time to buy another car, what a piece of trash. How will I ever daily drive this very rare, special, and highly sought-after car in traffic in CALIFORNIA, when it got only a 7:32:00 on a track in Germany. G_G

I would still take the gt350R over this ZL1 1LE. Yes this car is faster in all areas then the gt350R but for me I love the soul of the car it has a special appearance and sound that I like. Both cars are bad ass can not go wrong with either one.

Artie Rodriguez GT350R is old news. That car needs serious weight loss and butt load of torque. Since Z28 is gone GT350 can't hang with the current competition. You shouldn't buy a car just for an engine. It should have the complete package just like this ZL1 1LE. Even the upcoming 2018 mustang gt is going to be faster in a straight line and can be easily modded to surpass the GT350 on the road coarse.
@sammoon2906
@sammoon2906 7 жыл бұрын
al Do you sell crack, or just smoke it? The GT350 is just an engine, yet this is a 'whole package' HOW? The GT350 is as modified, or more, than this Camaro, how do you figure it's just an engine package, whereas this Camaro has some manner of modifications that a regular person cannot do to a Camaro SS? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the ZL1 package puts the LT4 engine(also used in Corvette) into the Camaro, and the 1le package is suspension and aero bits. So, I really think you have it backwards: the GT350 motor and suspension are only available in the GT350, whereas GM will sell me an LT4 and 1le suspension components I could, if I wanted, install into a Camaro V6....

The new mustangs look alot like a Maserati. It doesnt look like a muscle/pony car any more. I like the 2013 styling over the newer ones because it still looked American made, they now look like European

Idk if the gt350R is a joke in performance or if the camaro has really just out done the competition but the gap in performance is to far if you are a serious driver to consider the gt350R and in my opinion the body of the mustang is okay but I miss the older 12-13 body style mustangs that actually look american.
@sammoon2906
@sammoon2906 7 жыл бұрын
Andrew Ochoa Well, the GT350 has a engine that's a liter smaller, and no supercharger, so being 15 seconds behind that Camaro ZL1 makes sense. The Nismo GTR is faster than the Camaro by about ten seconds, so is the Camaro a joke comparatively? Personally, I would take the GT350 everyday, slower or not, because it's normally aspirated, has an amazing motor unique to it. I'm not sure what "looking American" means, other than the Camaro is still, and the 2005-2014 Mustang were retro designs, so pretty much a reliving of their most popular models of the past. I think the current Mustang is, as always, setting the pace for the others: I'll bet the next Camaro looks modern, like the Mustang does now. Same with the Challenger. No matter what, this debate will continue for a LONG time...

@@Sloimer ..and every time I see one at a track day it almost always has issues leaving the owner up shit creek.. 2 weeks ago dude in a white one had his brakes go out 10 minutes into his first session.. driving around at street speeds all was well. goes on track and his brakes went to shit. Before that I recall a dude in a black one that overheated and went into limp mode. My buddy's new C8 is on it's 3rd transmission.. GM sent out an engineer and even THEY can't figure it out.. Chevys don't get it done... unless you drive realllll slowwww

@@GunfightersINC really don’t care. As I said, I own both and I’m speaking to which car speaks to the soul. Reliability doesn’t give me goosebumps - and I’ve seen GT3’s have their engines explode on the track. Not to mention - you’re talking about the track now. You were talking about daily driving in your original comment. The R is a great car but it’s not a ZL1 1LE.

The ZL1/1LE will destroy the GT350R no matter who's driving! The GT350R ran a 7.32 at the Nurburgring! The ZL1/1LE ran it in 7.13! That's 19 full seconds faster! The GT350R couldn't beat the ZL1/1LE on any track! Another fact, a pro driver named Bob Weiss ran a 7:13 at the Nurburgring the same day it ran a 7:16. But they couldn't document it because it didn't have a go pro in the car. Ford has nothing that can compete with the ZL1/1LE period!

Just a dumb big engine with supercharger. No charm. And sounds like crap too. There is a reason why these sell at sticker all day long and the R still is going for over sticker after 3 YEARS !!

If it's only offered in manual they should take those stupid rev match paddles off. Make it a switch/button somewhere else. I feel like it'd just be in the way, like Matt keeps resting his hands on them out of habit making your grip on the wheel awkward. And it's not like he's going to decide last second that he doesn't feel like rev matching. No need to have it on the wheel.
@AndyGarcia-ch1ci

CJSchecter96 well the automatics all have the paddle shifting, makes no sense to make 2 desperate steering wheels. That's what keeps the costs down. And a paddle is much easier to use in my opinion that taking a hand off the wheel and possibly your eyes to press a button vs just tapping a paddle

Well to be fair, the GT350R doesn't really compete with either the ZL1/Z06 because those are supercharged. The 350R competes more with the Corvette Grand Sport since both are track focused cars with NA V8's. And if you don't include markups, the 350R is at a similar price point to the Grand Sport anyways.

"It doesn't stir the soul." This is some cosmic bullshit. I wish I could understand the car "journo" world, a world in which the car that is objectively faster, more refined, more comfortable, and more readily available at a dealer close to MSRP than its competitor "loses", yet cars with the exact same characteristics (new M5 over the current-gen CTS-V, for example) "win" and are praised for "being able to do it all."
