Here's Why Dodge Chose NOT to Upgrade the Challenger! Stupid or Brilliant?

I give you my thoughts on Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis' recent comments on why they chose not to upgrade the chassis on the on the Dodge Challenger when they had the chance. It could have been significantly lighter and more maneuverable; however, would it still have been a muscle car? Do you think Dodge made the right decision staying with the older and heavier platform?

Not a mistake, I am so glad they basically left the body alone from 2008 through 2023. I actually hate what has happened to the Mustang and Camaro styling wise. But then again I'm older and prefer the retro look. I do think it is a huge mistake to phase out the Hemi V8's this soon; they should have waited a couple more years. Electric is still way too far away to be wide spread. There is no grid to support it, no plans to enhance the grid, nor any real plans to fix the existing woefully inadequate grid in most states. Every time the power goes out (not if but when) you are strapped to a short range vehicle that will be stuck on the side of the road somewhere; no thanks!

Ford has taken the new S650 Mustang to a new level front, to back with an amazing new interior. So you consider the Challenger that is basically the same from 2008 to current. The reason Stellantis decided not to redesign the Challenger is due to customers willing to pay $70,000+ for a straight line performer with a Hemi engine. . They avoided R&D because the Challenger is profitable because Stellantis has put very little money to develop new upgrades. I keep hearing about the same old designs with Stellantis offering nothing new to their customers. I recently pulled my 2018 Chrysler 300C next to a 2022 300S on my dealers lot and found zero difference. If Ford can build them with the ongoing chip shortage. The S650 will be a hugh seller. .

Dodge made the correct decision. The Challenger and Charger gained popularity enormously in the last few years. I loved the ride of my trucks and decided to buy the Dodge Challenger rt plus 6spd instead of the Corvette Z06. The comfort is even better with the 6 spd Str 392 now. Bitd, a neighbor of mine bragged about his Iroc Z. I stuck to my Ford Gt Mustang and upgraded to the 93 Cobra when they were on sale due to the economy in late 93. The 5.0 was not even close to the Camaro in the cool factor , but it was the most popular and most hotrodded vehicle of all time imo. The Cobra went to the founders of the MCA for judgement rules book development. Original tires, battery, plastic wrap, stickers, pictures of chalk markings etc. In 03 at the 10 year mark of whether or not a car becomes collectible. The Challengers specifically will always be popular due to the accuracy of the retro design and possibly the best muscle cars ever produced. My experiences tell me this. They are flat out gorgeously designed and Timeless in their appeal..

I think it was a good idea 💡 that they stuck to the old chasis and body style. It was the nostalgia of the body style that bought the Challenger back in 2008. Changing the style in 2014 would have been a no 🧠 brainer in my opinion. I my self have had a 1972 SE Challenger, a 1974 Challenger 340, and a 2016 Srt 392 Challenger. I really love the Challenger and I’m planning to get one of the last ones for 2023. But other than the ZF 8HP, Dodge never made an effort to make the car lighter or more efficient. If they could have moved the Challenger to the Giorgio platform without making it any smaller, that could have been great cause one of my biggest issues with the other two is interior space. But if going Giorgio meant downsizing, I’m glad they stayed with the LX platform. Why we never saw more extensive use of lighter materials like aluminum for the engine block or some carbon fiber body panels keeps me awake at night.

It's almost 2023 and I'm still in love, got a new 21 SXT AWD last year too. Love everything about it, the style, the comfort, even the maintenance... used as a daily driver. Still, it would have been nice to have seen the kind of performance those legendary engines could have provided in a lighter and more capable chassis. I think they did the right thing. The writing was on the wall with EV Implementation so for Dodge to use the Giorgio platform it would have been for only a couple years and now you've wasted billions of dollars on chassis development and you're still in the same boat as they are now. The Alfa is a very underrated performance sedan even the 2.0l is plenty quick but with the Giorgio Platform it had limitations as well Jeep found it out real quick like when they looked at it for Development on the Grand Cherokee remodel because it is extremely limited for use of Hybrid powertrains or EV implications. This is why the the STLA Large was developed. I think the Grand Cherokee sits on a modified Giorgio Global platform kind of precursor to the STLA Large. I've been watching what has been going on with Stellantis and all the products for the most part.

Not a Mercedes chassis which alot of people get wrong..but they used suspension components (which Dodge changed the design and geometry) from the S and E class.. namely the control arms and 5 link rear suspension. The platform is a rengineered Chrysler LHS platform that underpinned the Chrysler Concord, Chrysler LHS, Chrysler 300M, Chrysler Yorker, Dodge Intrepid, and Eagle Vision.

I think they made a mistake. They could still make that chassis lighter. They basically just chose not to further optimize the car. That being said, these cars are built to a price point and a sales Target like everything else. So they made these muscle cars attainable for the average guy. But from a performance standpoint, they gave up some of that because of the weight

I’m not anymore the price point on these cars right now is absolutely ridiculous and I don’t know why anybody is buying them at this price. I seen a kid yesterday buy a hellcat for 90 gs…. I remember when hellcats were 60,000. I personally would not pay over $65,000 for a brand new hellcat. I got a dealership right now that sold me my brand new scat pack in 2019 for $40,000 call me up to sell me the same car oh but it has navigator for $52,000. I said it’s the same car I’ll do it for 46 but not a penny more and his response was no discount on scat packs and I said OK no sale on scat pack. I will not pay $52,000 for a base model scat pack, oh but it has navigation. My mother has navigation what the fuck does that mean. Lol you get my point. You are no longer paying the proper price point for these cars.

@@williamrose7184 Completely agree. Stellantis is making a killing selling these dated vehicles from $70,000 to over $100,000. Not what I consider a price point for the average buyer. Stellantis created all the hype introducing final addition sticker package Dodge Chargers and Challengers. Increased the price and car payments starting matching mortgage payments.

They should have done a big 3 for the electric cars. CHALLENGER, CHARGER, BARRACUDA. kept the charger 4 door and cuda & challenger coupes and got all 3 new bodys. 😝😝😝 that would have been crazy to see. So now theres not even a 4 door option. Now its just 1 charger coupe, "banshee" still cool but could have brought a whole new family to the electric world ⚡️

They did the right thing sticking with the Challenger body and chassis. They did the wrong thing giving it all up for EV. Sold my 2020 Scatpack last week for more than I bought it for. I'm in the market for a GT500. If Ford is sticking to their game, I'll roll with them. My first car was a 70 Mach I. I'm not a big fan of the modern Mustangs, but they have a few (like the GT500) that I like.

I think they did not made a mistake. It was brillant. The end of production in the end of 2023 is plain stupid. Let's take the Guilia scenario. The Alpha Romeo Giulia have a very bad reputation in terms of reliability issues, recalls, etc. I think that American people would have left the brand much earlier as it would have lost it's Muscle Car Status to be a sports car, different audience. It would have killed the brand as we know it much faster than the year 2023. Competition is very high in the Guilia's segment. Do you see a RacerX channel content without any Challenger? Great video RacerX!

What bothers me about the whole Dodge thing is that they’re supposed to be “the brotherhood of muscle”, but they’re tapping out before Camaro and Mustang. THEN, they take the Banshee and add that horrendously weak and fake sounding “exhaust sound” that my iPhone could literally get louder than. Big disappointment there, I really think they could have gotten away with a few more years of V8’s, even if it meant dropping the hellcat power plant.
Is the Scatpack still an R/T? This is confusing..
