This is the problem with car reviewers who compare affordable, practical cars against luxury or super cars. Not everyone is a car geek and do not care about horsepower and gadgets. They want a car that gets them safely to and from work or school and fits within their budget but has enough tech for a little bit of fun. Compare the Corolla against the Civic or Elantra and other sub $30k cars so people shopping this category have a good point of reference.

jsonlee01 Your right because when they do review other vehicles that are much more expensive and sleeker they tend to be biased against all other cars that are not in that category and it dilutes their opinion and reviews to a large extent so normal people like new drivers or parents who want a good reliable family sedan don’t really get an adequate, unbiased straightforward analysis for a vehicle that they could use.

@baronvg4 жыл бұрын
HereIgoAgain Lol I don’t mind condescension, but sometimes, his double standards REALLY annoy me. Example: he reviewed a Subaru Forester. The shows an image of the car in the gauge cluster. When the car brakes, the little lights on that tiny screen car also light up. He was soooo confused as to why and thought it was weird and confusing to have that. Admittedly, he obviously didn’t know that it does that because when it’s in adaptive cruise control, the brake lights help tell you the care is braking. BUT, if a supercar or luxury car had that same exact feature, he would’ve called it great attention to detail. But with a family wagon like the Forester, it’s weird and confusing. WHAT? Oh, and he also totally didn’t know that the small light on side view mirror was a light for illuminating the door handle and the ground (he thought it was just a pointless, superfluous light) which confuses me because he’s reviewed a bunch of luxury cars that offer the same feature (albeit, different implementations) but again, it’s like he can’t grasp that luxury features are making their way to less expensive cars now lmao!

I actually bought one of these and overall it's satisfactory. One thing you and a lot of other reviewers did not mention was just how well this car handles. Handling is superb. Very easy to keep in control and on the road. Related to this are the 15" wheels. The other Corolla trims offer 16" or 18" wheels. This size has three important and often overlooked advantages: 1) less unsprung and rotating mass, greater ride comfort, and less vulnerability to pinch flats. Moreover, tires in this size are about half the cost of comparable tires for the 18" wheels(!!!). Compared to faster cars with lots of wasted horsepower on American roads, where this car shines is normal, stop-and-go urban traffic. It actually gets greater mileage here and because it doesn't have a transmission as such, there is no extra wear from all those extra shifts that traditional automatics and manual transmissions get in this type of traffic. And I like that the car is actually quiet and comfortable. I also like the conventional feel of the car versus, say , a Honda Insight. The Insight drives about the same as this but it has lots of extra gadgetry that I don't like (more on that later). I like that it actually has a conventional shift handle as well; even the Prius doesn't have one! Having said that there are some things I dislike, but fortunately I can mostly ignore and/or live without them: Anything having to do with your mobile device on this car save for Bluetooth functionality is terrible. You spend so much time troubleshooting and so little time using it, that it's better to just get a holder and use the apps already built into your phone. That's my own experience with an Android phone although I suspect an IOS device would be somewhat less hassle. The safety sense features I find to be annoying but thankfully I can turn off--and have indeed turned off--almost all of them. I concede, however, the benefit of possibly reducing the number of crashes caused by our increasingly distracted driving population. I simply turn off the gizmos and pay attention to where the car is actually going to compensate. The digital display information bits can be somewhat useful although I find them distracting when driving, so I simply have that part of the display disabled as well. Finally, the lack of a spare tire is slightly annoying, although the tire well has all the hardware needed to mount a spare, so you can conceivably buy a spare tire kit for a standard L or LE and put it in there. I would suspect that it costs a mint to get one from Toyota, however. Overall I think this car is pretty good and I think, because of the relative mechanical simplicity of the design, that it will last for a very long time, assuming that I take care of it and don't crash it somewhere.

I completely agree with this video. I'm a car guy and I just bought a Corolla. My last 2 cars were BMWs and I quickly realized that they are not worth the money. I drive almost 100% of the time in city traffic so big engines do nothing but waste gas. Also BMWs are extremely expensive to fix. I needed a full engine replacement in my 2016 X1 and it was nearly $14000. I went with the Corolla for a number of reasons. 1st it's the cheapest real Toyota you can get that has navigation, non cloth seats, blind spot monitors, and TSS2.0. 2nd it has excellent gas millage for a gas car. I really wanted the hybrid but you can only get it with cloth seats. 3rd It's really comfortable both of my BMWs (A 3 series and an X1) were supremely uncomfortable my back was constantly in pain. There are a few features missing from the Corolla that are interestingly available in other markets that would have been nice to have such as head up display, parking sensors, and automatic parking. I was originally cross shopping the Corolla with the Mazda 3 but I ended up going with the Corolla because I was tired of worrying about cars. I was always worried that my BMWs would need an expensive repair. I was really ready to get a Mazda 3 but the power drivers seat broke during my test drive and after that I immediately settled on the Corolla. Also the seats in the Mazda were a lot more uncomfortable than the seats in the Corolla.

He only likes luxury expensive vehicles specially Land Rover and Mercedes and now that he got a Ford GT and moved to California he is the best of the best cherry picking the reviews that he does. Now his reviews and subjective to his strictly by as point of view and has the tendency of diminish and subject the comparison of vehicles to a higher standards that the vehicle doesn't fit in or never was intended to be in that level. Now with the everyday people comments it is discriminatory and put him on the spot that he think he is not a everyday people. The reality is that today we can be really on the top of the mountain and something happen in the economy or your personal life and you end up at the bottom of the mountain with the everyday people that you discriminate all the time. I applaud Tommy to step forward and make your own review challenging his review and showing that even that the corolla it is a entry level compact vehicle, still performed perfectly as intended to be (commuter daily driven car) and that will last way longer than any premium luxury vehicle. Doug is right. The Corolla is a car and for the most part it is very basic, but that's not a bad thing. A Toyota, any of them honestly, will last far longer than the typical car Doug reviews and percentage wise depreciates far less too.

To be 100% honest, it is an absolutely alright car, it's very likely one of the most reliable one out there. It's obviously very practical, it probably drives very fine and for the price and gas mileage it is overall a very good package. But once you start driving it, it's... Okay. There's again nothing wrong with it. But pick a Civic or a Jetta or a Mazda 3, all have nicer looking interiors, not that it really matters in the grand scheme of things car related, all are more fun to drive. But for someone who does a lot of mileage and is just seeking practical, economical and reliable, well. It's hard to beat the Corolla but don't expect to go out and have a ton of fun driving it around. But you're really not buying it for the fun of driving it.

when you was a teen age and want a car so bad for years, any car you can drive it for fun. keep in mind that it's a corolla 86 that started the whole drift thing, so econbox can be fun too. people in US certainly never heard of k-car racing too, granted they are not fast, but people do have fun driving their low power cars too. the fact is,I have more fun in my first car 93 corolla than any car that I have later on.

The point that Doug (and MOST auto journalists) miss is that the vast majority of car buyers are looking for the things that the Corolla provides: 1) Reliability 2) Longevity 3) Great VALUE for the money Sure, if you are one of those KZbin millionaires like Doug, then you get to look down your (huge) nose at folks like us. lol. @kevina20525 жыл бұрын
I've always driven "economic boxes" and the first thing I do is remove the dealer frame. Not everyone buys these cars because they are boring and don't appreciate more performance oriented cars. Most people buy them because sinking money into a more expensive car isn't possible!

I remember a top scientist explained that the best way to save the planet is to reduce CO2 emissions from vehicle exhausts, and the easiest way for everyone to do that is for everyone to buy a Toyota Prius. Well, I looked at the Prius and I hated the dash of that car, but I like the dash and the entire interior of this Corolla hybrid very much, so I will try to do my little part in saving the planet by switching over to a Corolla hybrid for my next car.

The problem is that Toyota has a 2.0 liter hybrid engine available in Europe. It has substantially more powerful than the 1.8 liter hybrid available in North America. It makes no sense to not make the more powerful engine available here where we have longer, flatter roads.

Joe Joseph and that is exactly the point Doug Demuro makes if you actually watch his video. It’s a fine car for people that aren’t car people. The TFL response makes it sound like he called it a terrible car...he didn’t. He merely said it’s not an exciting car for car people.

2019 Corolla owner here, I love it. I needed something very dependable, reliable and cheap on gas considering gas in my country is well over 10 bucks for a gallon and it's probably gonna get worse and worse. I've looked at other cars, but very few score as high in terms of customer satisfaction, reliability, gas mileage and just the overall quality/fit and finish. I have my weekend warriors for exciting driving, but this is great as a daily.

I think your dad made this comment. It would take 3 1/2 years to pay off the price difference between the gas and hybrid. I’d stick to the gas that makes more than 30mpg. While I am a person that’s more inline with Doug’s thinking, but I agree with you completely on Toyota. I personally only buy German Cars now, but my younger struggling days, it was a trusty most reliable Toyota Tercel that got me through the years. It only made 78 hp, and a carbureted engine. I had over 210k miles before the clutch finally gave out. I had nothing but respect for her. I abandoned her because it would take $2500 to make run again, and the car was only worth maybe $2500. I put the money as down payment on my next car, a Honda Civic. I regretted every day for that decision. My Tercel would run just fine had I spent the money fix it.

I dont like the Sedan I prefer the Hatchback we get in Europe. Then the 2.0l hybrid is so much more fun for not that much more money. I think Doug gets blinded of all the crazy cars he test so when a normal car comes by he cant see it for what it is.

I live in the US. I have a 2019 hatchback. What is the 2.0L hybrid rated at? I'm sure it's more power than the 1.8 in the states.
@thtupid5 жыл бұрын
@@kevina2052 We aussies don't get the 2L hybrid :(. That is rated at around 131kw total system power but the 1.8 is only around 90kw as it is based off the previous generation ZR engine. Well...it's 131kw in the lexus UX anyway. And I agree the hatchback is much better looking than the sedan. That front end doesn't seem to work as well on the sedan compared to the hatch.
@pauldenunzio35955 жыл бұрын
We still have that Prius following in the US that angers some to have a carolla hybrid hatch version stateside that would completely make the Prius obsolete. It’s a problem Toyota can deal with being a top selling car manufacturer worldwide. Interestingly the carolla is the number 1 selling car worldwide, we’re a touch slow here in the US however
@aldeenatar41475 жыл бұрын
Even their XSE gets a lot of MPG. And it's rev happy(or rev needy) to utilize the 169 hp. 169...that's about how fast lowend gas powered non-turbo base vws were just over a year ago and the past(I've got one of them for a fact). For a corolla, that's huge. They didn't even start here, they already did that with their hatchback. And this hybrid corolla walkin' over its cousin prius is not something that's worth just a small talk. The machinery in that corolla has an aura of engineering eloquence making it very meaningful. It's worth a flowery, moving speech.

I’m thinking the car has “wheel covers” not “hub caps.” Hub caps traditionally only cover the lug nuts on the wheel. Base line cars from the forties, fifties and sixties are a good example. You would pay extra to have the full wheel covers which historically only came on mid or hi line trim levels. Your basic VW had hub caps as an example.
