It's finally time to get my relatively cheaply acquired Porsche Cayenne up onto the ramp at eporsch to find out why I was able to pay what I did for the car, with hopefully no nasty surprises!
Big thank you to eporsch: www.eporsch.co.uk/

Hi Joel, I'm delighted to see that you have scored not only a genuinely great car there. It also pleases me to see and hear the wisdom of a genuinely good, honest mechanic. I own a lurid, metallic green 1978 911 targa among other, far less normal machinery, and have to say that an independent specialist invariably makes sense. I used to do all of my maintenance myself, being ex motor trade, but I had the devil's own job when it came to finding an independent up here in Northumberland, the land that time forgot, but when i did i was so glad that she's as honest as the day is long, very supportive and I've found that - perhaps because a woman is far less likely to patronise and generally treat poorly, another woman. Yes, there are good dealership workshop staff out there, but an indeoendent will always have the potential to operate in a much less incentivised way than a main dealer mechanic. The usual way with the independent trade is that - because they're small business people and havecno need to upsell the job. On the three occasions (between 1983 and now) on which i have bought cars from dealerships, they mostly tried to charge a ridiculous amount for, say, washer additive, when they know double well that i always carry a bottle of the stuff in all of my car. Your guy has a very calm, pleasant approach and, with his obviously good brand knowledge, would definitely inspire confidence were I to take a vehicle to him for work to be done. Two nil to Joel; great car and a totally decent chap to work on it. Your content in the cases of some of your cars left me feelingva little disheartened as I often felt tgat itcwasxabout time karma came knocking for you. With the bargain Copart TT and now, clearly, with the Porsche, your luck appears to be improving, richly deserved i say.😊 Keep up the interesting, informative content anf if I end up buying an early Cayenne to replace my utterly brilliant but recently written off X5 (not my fault, she was parked when a fool in a two day old Peugeot decided to attempt to ram raid the boot space. mine drove home afterwards, his didnt😂), I shall be crediting you with the idea. I hadn't realised how durable a good example of the large Porsche can be. Yours is so clean underneath. Well done, Sir. 👍👍👍👍👍

Hi Joel, I have owned my 3.2 v6 for just over 6 years now & I can honestly say its been the best reliable car I've owned, it also tow's effortlessly. I have dealt with all the little niggles you get, but they are all well documented on one forum or another and easily fixed. The spare parts are cheap because of it being a multi-platform car. In my 6 and a bit years the most expensive repair was the labor charge for replacing the coolant thermostat, the part itself was less than £20. I have the air suspension and its been great and reliable. It just keeps going. It had new disc's and pads fitted when I bought it and I only replaced the pads last year after 50,000 miles. I have looked at other cars in the SUV range and they all compare themselves to the cayenne's greatness. I am only the 3rd owner of my one after 20 years, mines an 04 model by the way, Reg V6 DKD (so you can check it out) even the number plate was cheap. Who cares about the mpg when you drive past all the broken down vehicles on the side of the road. I put an after market head unit that looks great and sorts out the Bluetooth issue as well. If you like reliability you'll keep it, oh and my battery date is 2007. I could go on for hours, all the best.

This video is one of the most informative videos I have ever seen , only trouble is that I need the car up on a ramp before I buy it as there is so much to consider and as my "project" has done 144K miles , a lot more potential wear could be possible . £700 road tax would put me off even though I am already used to paying £400 for my cars. However, if you think that the condition is amazing and won't require much work, then the high tax might be worth it, especially if Joel's experience with insurance is anything to go by. If the turbo is only a little more to insure over and above the NA version, it might be worth it. Or, you could just be patient and wait for a 3.2/3.6 to become available. I won't mention the additional fuel consumption!!

Very decent underneath for a 05. I've got a humble Honda Accord 2.4 of the same year that has avoided salted roads and looks similar. The Porsche scores though in having a fully hot dipped galvanized chassis. Using the same insurance comparison site I wondered if the insurance would be expensive. Nope, I pay £220 and this Cayenne came in at £305 with the AA. I think I may switch to Porsche!

Well, that's got to be a relief! Lots of small stuff, but it would still add up to quite a sum I suspect. I'd just tackle the stuff as absolutely needed. And in the summer get it up on a lift for half a day and wire brush, treat, and paint the bits of corrosion. Otherwise, just treat the car with a little respect for it being 19 years old, and hopefully it'll last as long as you need it to. Remember it's not a sports car. If it were, some of the stuff would be more urgent. But if you were to push it hard, just know some of the suspension work will have to be done sooner rather than later. Driven normally as daily run-around and family utility vehicle, you may be able to spread the jobs that have been identified over a couple of years. Maybe aim to divide the list of jobs into four at six-monthly intervals. Some of the jobs you could even tackle by yourself on your driveway and avoid the labour costs to change cheap parts that are readily accessible. Anyway, congrats, and good luck!!!
