I see people claiming the humvee wasn't a military failure, yes it was, just because it was in service a long time doesn't mean it was a good vehicle. Most of the years it was in service was in peacetime, except the Gulf War and a few other occasions before the 2000's. After it was used in Iraq and Afghanistan for years it was shown to be ill-equipped for the job. Scroll through the comments of people who have actually been in the military who've used them for proof, not the wannabe tough guys commenting here. Also, looking at the comments I think it’s funny some people assume this video has something to do with Chris even though nothing is mentioned here. I could care less, I was talking about people in general who buy hummers in the video. Everyone already knows people who buy hummers have serious problems anyways it’s not news. ⬇️Scotty’s Top DIY Tools: 1. Bluetooth Scan Tool: amzn.to/2nfvmaD 2. Mid-Grade Scan Tool: amzn.to/33dKI0k 3. We Marines loved our Humvees! We had so much fun with them! I know fellow Veterans who use them for daily drivers. They put a new Duramax with a allison trans and do all the maintenance on them. They are not for the faint of heart. Personally if I got one it would be because of the good memories I had with them while in the Marines.

@@kozicki4 Wrong. GM went bankrupt in 2009 after the "bailout". Look it up. Same as Chrysler. That vaporized all that taxpayer money lent in. Then instead of the taxpayer keeping ownership of the new entity, the then administration let the unions and the union health fund have most it. What the taxpayer "made money on" was the loans to the new entity after the bankruptcy. The original amount put it was wiped out by the bankruptcy.

I used to work on HMMWV's in the Marine Corps and the only reason they break down is because the Marine Corps beats them to death and sometimes other units don't take care of them. The 6.2 and 6.5 diesel engines they use are actually extremely reliable if you maintain them. The HMMWV just needs to be maintained, if not it will end up breaking down just like anything else.

The military hummer was never intended to be an armored personnel carrier. It was designed to be fast, maneuverable and very agile, much like the original jeep. Adding all that protection, defeated everything it was built to do. The civilian versions, we're just glorified four by fours, with a different body.

I get what you’re saying there man, but honestly riding in them for the better half of 5 yrs they were not fast at all or agile lol. Even the ones sent back to the states and broken down to be used on base were slow. Idk man, I watched a humvee windshield take some blasts and hits that makes boots crap their pants. But you’re right, it was meant to be a lot faster than most other vehicles used in the ranks at that time. They had no clue that IEDs would be the main weapon used in Iraq and Afghanistan. Then by the time they got them beefed up, other kinds of transportation was in the works. If I ever go back I hope like heck to get in with a striker unit lol. While I agree with you about the civilian Hummer, I disagree about it being under armored as a military vehicle. The original military Hummer was designed as replacement for the M1151 Mutt a Vietnam era Jeep which was a follow up (and slightly larger) WWII era Jeep. Neither of these vehicles were armored as originally produced. The under-armored Hummer was the result of the military using the vehicle in roles for which is was not originally intended.

The Hummer was a light recon and transport that the army pushed into service as armored cavalry. It isn't the fault of the vehicle that it was used incorrectly. Slow rolling them though Fallujah was never what they were intended for. They were great at their actual job. The JLTV will be horrible if it ever goes against Russia or China. That high silhouette makes it a massive target.
@tylersmith3139
@tylersmith3139 3 жыл бұрын
The humvee was a massive target, but a lightly armoured massive target, unlike the jltv actually has decent armor. The JLTV isn't a MRAP, it's not so large that the it will take up attention more that the Humvee did and since it actually was designed to have armour, it performs better than the Humvee.

Construction Mechanic 3rd class USN Navy Seabees here; I work on these things all the time and its the same constant issues with them: electrical. We have had to replace tie rod boots on them and you have to replace the entire tie rod end just for a blown boot (Dumb design), the batteries are located underneath the passenger seat which isn't a great place for them and we once had a newer guy arc out a battery with the screws that mount the seat to the cover and caught the HMMWV on fire because the covers were never installed or fell off the screws, the windshield washer pumps always go out, switches and gauges constantly break and if you live in a place with a lot of rain these things leak and collect water inside them constantly which leads to corrosion and mildew/musty-ness. The engine bays are so oddly shaped and cramped that getting anything inside them or out of them is a hassle from the front end, but the rear access from inside the cab is a lovely treat for us mechanics, these things also go through sensors like no other as well, the doors never close correctly or are crooked, the windows never open or close easily but the only thing I can say is they always work even if its difficult to operate them. The A/C is also a known problem to go out all the time, gasket replacement is rampant but I will say this; never had to replace or major overhaul an engine yet but the transmissions are ticking time bombs. Something people always forget about military equipment and gear is this; "LOWEST BIDDER"

Next drill the wheels are out of alignment with different torques, the batter dies, starter burns out, just all sorts of weird electrical problems that were supposed to be resolved a month earlier. Out of 8 humvees, 2 were reliable. they were the 2 uparmored ones with badass air conditioners in them. Oddly enough the LMTV and other large trucks worked just fine all the time.

So the Humvee was released in 1980, the military wanted a fast troop carrier that was all terrain reminiscent of the willys Jeep of wwii. It didn’t have a ton of armor because it was meant for a European USSR vs NATO war where the amount of armor required to actually protect it from soviet vehicles would be too heavy and compromise mobility. After the Cold War the focus shifted to counter insurgency in the Middle East which the humvee was not suited for given the use of IDEs

Scotty is simply talking about fiction. You might need a HD jack and jack stands, but that is the case for any real 4x4 truck. Everything on the HMMWV can be worked on with common hand tools, including installing and removing all that up armor that was never part of the original design specifications. Unless you think a simple spanner to loosen and tighten cannon plugs is "Heavy Duty Equipment." The HMMWVs that we are replacing are up to 34 years old, and they were designed to replace all the other light trucks the military used for support.

Sure, the Pinto is a cool little niche oddity that can get you from Point A to B, but wouldn't it be safer to just get something that didn't leave all of your passengers with leg amputations and blown out ear drums? 😉

The repair and gas can be reduced with a ecu tune and replaced with higher quality parts which will eventually pay off

Yeah you're right and they don't take into consideration that in 1984 this was a really awesome design having torsion gears with really tough front and rear independent suspension with high clearance and low center of gravity pause the damn thing is a 1 1/4 ton rated like a Ford F-450 and there's no big huge Super Duty trucks that can go off-road like a Hummer bone stock so take that off-road concept and mix with how heavy duty it was heavy duty things suck off-road but not in this case and not back in 1984 so it's actually very awesome

As a former Army Motor Sergeant, the Hummer served us well over the 20 years I served. We beat the crap out of those vehicles. Under the circumstances, I think they held up well. Hummers and Duece 1/2 (M35A2) were the best of the best IMO.

To say the Hummer failed in the military because of complaints that it wasn't safe enough, is really not fair to the vehicle; given the time at which it was adopted & the vehicle it replaced. Hey Scottie, I'm intimately familiar with these, having worked at the manufacturing site. Coming from the factory, the HMMWV was not designed to be armored. This was a different type of HMMWV that was retrofitted at request from the military. It has to be shipped to another facility, not part of the OEM, to be what they call the up armored. The H2 was honestly just a GMT800 with a different body on it. I could go on and on about both of these if you want, lol. Love your channel by the way.

I am a combat veteran. I was an Infantryman in the Army, and I love Humvees. These things are solid beasts! I want to buy one and do a Duramax swap. We mainly used MRAps and JLTVs when I down range and only began using them as our MRAPs began to get destroyed. Our infantry company had only 12 humvees in our combat outpost. By the end of the deployment, we only had four operational humvees. All of the other humvees were destroyed by IEDs. Anyway, I love these things! I want a 2008 AM General M1097R1 HMMWV.

You make it sound like they were death traps. 66% of your company's HMMWVs were destroyed by IEDs? Wouldn't you rather drive around in MRAPs and JLTVs if that's the case?

I got one of the first Hummer Ambulances at Fort Hood way back in 1985-86. I was told it was super stable and could not roll over. One of my Sergeant's took it out with one of our soldiers and they drove on several tank trails with no problems. On the way back, they went off of a tank trail slightly and the incline was enough that it rolled down the hill and ended up wheels up. They were not hurt and an MP came by with a Jeep and used it to pull the Hummer back onto the wheels. When they got back, our Battalion Commander went crazy over the crushed top since it was brand new. I went back to driving around in my Jeep. True story. Good times.

I was a Humvee mechanic in the Army back in the 90s and early 2000s so I have extensive experience with them. I disagree with Scotty about them being hard to work on, it is a very mechanical vehicle with very few computer sensors plus the 16 inches of ground clearance means I never needed to put it up on stands to work underneath it. Now easy to work on should NEVER be confused with reliable, they do break down quite a bit mainly due to the sub par GM diesels that power them, and yes you would never want one as a daily driver, the wide 85" track makes them a handful in most driving situations. Humvees are decent offroad vehicles, their wide track makes them very stable but they are not a mud toy, they are very heavy and worse yet they are nose heavy so they tend to nose dive into any deep mud, I was also the unit recovery specialist and I have pulled plenty of them out of the mud, they are NOT the ultimate offroad vehicles as many claim.

I was a military mechanic for 8 yrs and I agree with Jared. . The biggest problem we faced were people killing the glow plugs by not letting them warm up. When we received the Humvees they forgot to send one important thing. The specialised socket to remove and replace glow plugs we made our own. As for top speed, We would cruise ours at 65 (Unless in convoy)
