This is what makes this channel great. Variety, nostalgia, the exotic and the humble treated with as much respect as the regal. I was really glad to see this car come up. Years ago I had to buy one of these going through a difficult financial time. It was burgundy with black bumpers. An old couple owned it and it had just 18k on the clock. It was like a new penny, but a far cry from the Mercedes I had to sell. I have to say it did me a great service. It never let me down on my daily commute come rain or shine, summer or winter. It was ludicrously cheap to maintain. It was actually quite fun. I thought I would feel embarrassed, but I was proud of it and kept it pristine. It saw me through that time until being able to get back to my next car which was a, new at the time, Audi A6. Great car and glad to see it featured on here.

I was in Spain in '96 when I first started seeing these Ford Ka's on the streets. At first, (as an American), I was embarrassed by the looks of them, but I soon realized the purpose behind making an entry level car stand out so much, and I kind of respected the people buying them, and the company making it. Nowadays, in San Diego, California, it's fun to see one every once in a long while, with Mexican plates, on this side of the border. Especially if it's the convertible.

You could get an extra 5 mph top end out of it with the air con off. I basically drove it with my foot to the floor the length of the M1 every week and back. Was great. I had a 1999 Fiesta Zetec as a first car. Wasn't much of a Ford fan. Just got it because it's what I could afford. One of my all time favourite cars. Remember learning to drive in it and just thinking it was so much fun but not knowing why! At 17 I thought all cars were like that. It was comfortable and could do the longer distance stuff, but it was just so direct. It was slow, but the engine made a lovely growl when you went for it. The IB5 makes a nice whine in the lower gears. It had all the ingredients that make a car fun and give it character! Which is what we've lost in car design today! I now have a Fabia Mk1. Fantastic in its own way but glad I had the Fiesta first. The Fabia gets you from A to B but is very forgettable. 😅

For some years I was living in South America, I remember that this car became extremely popular ( obvious, It was very cheap) but after a short time it gained a terrible fame. Having an accident at more than 80 km/h in a Ford Ka was almost always synonymous with tragedy. I don't know if the version here in Europe is different in terms of security, but I remember that there they joked that it was a coffin on wheels. A friend had one that she bought in 2006, I visited her in 2014 and when I asked her about the car she told me, showing terrible relief, that she was able to buy another car (strange thing, because there the average people usually have the same car for more than 10 years) She told me: If you look, before there were many Ford Ka on the street and now it is rare to see any, they are all destroyed. That phrase stuck with me, especially because I did realize that you were still seeing a lot of Toyotas, Mitsubishis, VWs, Fiats, Ranaults from that time (90's-00's) and even from the 80's and 70's, but no Ka.

No car, especially this small and old could give you any protection in a crash at 80 km/h.

@@Inflator82 Modern cars (90's onwards) are generally very safe, even in crashes at relatively high speeds (obviously not all equally, hence the EuroNCAP ratings) and small ones are much safer than an SUV or Pickup . After seeing this video I looked for the Ford Ka for the Latin American market (different engines, no abs, airbags only for the driver, and probably lower quality materials than those here in Europe to save costs) and in the safety tests for that market (LatinNCAP) I saw that the Ford Ka scored 0 POINTS. I think only the Tatas (India), some Chinese cars and the Ford Ka have scored 0 points in the LatinNCAP tests since they were held.

I've had quite a few (5!) Ka in my life, and they hold a very special place in my heart. Yes, they are under powered and rust like it's a competition, but they are such fun little cars to drive. My first was a '98 bog standard red with the black bumpers one, and I really think that having such a basic car really helps with letting a driver understand the mechanics of how they work and drive without being too scary because they were so simple to fix or service yourself. I've also had a 2000 Ka that had a Van Aaken Turbo conversion on the original 1.3 Endura engine. It gave it a bit of a boost, which in something that weighs about the same as a wet fag packet, made it incredible fun to drive. I sold it for a 2000 Ford Mondeo ST200 Estate (a rare beast) and although the Mondeo was faster and more practical, I found myself missing the Ka. So, after selling the ST200, I got my last, and final Ka which was a 2007 Ka Luxury. Better spec, better engine made it a joy to own for 10 years until went to pastures new and I do miss it. My current Mk 7.5 Fiesta Titanium X is on paper a much better car, and it's very good, but I just never quite get the same smile on my face as when I was behind the wheel of one of my little Ka.

Great review as ever. Love the 50-metre test - totally agree. The first 50 metres that you drive in a car tell you a huge amount about it. First impressions, as with people, are everything. Back in the noughties a work colleague (whose name was Kath, at least she could say 'Ka, as in Kath…') had one of these and I was always impressed with the clock. Yes, it was perhaps incongruous, and reminded me of the equally odd but attractive jewel-like clock in a Maserati Biturbo, but how nice that it still had proper hands when all other manufacturers had adopted awful digital clocks that looked as if they cost 10p to make, and probably did. And yes, you are so right, the vast majority of modern cars lack the fun element. The Ka dared to be different, perhaps not mechanically but at least with its styling. You mention rust and that it has been the demise of most. So true. The Ka had some appalling water traps, next time you see one parked have a look just below the fuel filler cap. It will be rusty. Ford stuck sponge-like foam on the back of the panel to stop vibration but of course it got wet and never dried out, rusting the panel in the process.

A small light ford 😀 this is why I keep a 13 plate ford fiesta ecbopost 125bhp on the drive. Handles very well, pulls very well, is rust resistant, cost peanuts to run and insure, and parts are plentiful and cheap. And when the engine blows up (she is on 108'000 and runs as sweet as a nut with no advisories on the not) ,plenty out there to replace it with

This was my first car and it was the most fun I had in a car. A great little engine that started first time without fail and it handled like a go kart. Sadly I had to get rid of it because of the rust, as was the issue with Fords pre 2007.

My wife bought one as a stop gap when her car developed a problem with the CVT gearbox which kept going back and fourth and never got fixed. (I did tell her not to buy it but she knew best). The Ka reminded me of cars from my youth. You feel everything. It did nothing for you in the way of technology. Good cheap, budget vehicle. My daughter wrote off her first car which was a 2nd generation Ka. She hit a post while speeding on a icey road near Brands Hatch. She walked away without a scratch, not sure if that would have happened in this gen. For this reason I'd happily recommend the 2nd gen over the 1st for first time drivers.

I had a Ka1, seats, radio, power steering and a heater and little else, it even had the Kent endura E engine but what a machine! It was reliable, fun to drive, good on fuel and even the elderly engine didn't clatter enough to ruin the experience. The only two things I had against it was high car tax and if fizzled like an Alka seltzer underneath. Id have another 😊

I had a KA as my first car and one thing I will say is they will make you never want to work on a car yourself again. Compared to the fiesta I moved onto it was hideous to even just do basic maintenance on

Had a Ka Blue. Dials and trim details. Cracking little car but disappointing fuel consumption. Amazed at what you could get in with the back seats down.
