Hi George, Do you think that they are as reliable as m47 and especially m57 engines. Or they are just good as other bmw engines?
@tomkolodziej37865 ай бұрын
Not only timing chain folks. Be aware that late N47/N57 and then B47/B57 engines have problem with fuel getting into the wiring loom. My wife’s F30 320d had it at only 98.000 miles. Fuel got to the top sensors ,injectors and into the Ecu box. Just unplug one of the plugs at the top of the engine or injector plug and if it’s wet then you know what is happening and it’s time to act. Save yourself thousands of pounds in repairs until it’s too late. All because of leaky sensor on fuel feed line.

I have a BMW 318d N47 2014 the latest car with the n47 engine. It has now done 300.000km which is like close to 200.000 miles on orignal chain. It now has to be replaced, but i could drive like this for a long time before i have to replace it. The only sign, that it needs a timing chain replacemaint, is that sometimes not everytime, upon starting it ratless for like 2 sec and then sounds completely normal afterwards. But come on 200.000 miles on orignal chain. That¨s not bad, if the next chain kit that replaces the old one can last 200.000 miles, i never have to change it ever again.

@@thealmightyz73 thats extremely impressive for an N47 engine, I am not quite sure with my chain (116d F20, 2011) at 171k kilometres, there might be a noise coming from the chain on cold starts, after a few seconds it goes back to normal IF there was one to begin with
@thealmightyz733 ай бұрын
@@Kaan._G if the sound is really there, you can't miss it. But you shouldn't sit around listening to yourself crazy. In my case, it also started making noise on a cold start and was soon gone. At some point it got worse and the car also pulled up strangely, that's when I knew it was time to replace it. I guess I just got lucky that it took so long. What I've also had immense luck with is the steering rack where the bolts can break off. Known problem with this model. I went to get original filters from a BMW dealer in the Netherlands to do a service at a friend of mine who has a garage (as always). Then they said there was a recall and I could have the car checked for free. I could swear I heard something breaking in the engine bay a week before while parking. So it seems a bolt broke. They fitted a completely new steering box with improved bolts. Cost with labour +- EUR 2000. Didn't have to pay anything. Really very lucky with this. Because if it happens while driving, your car is just steeringless.

I totally agree. The problem is mostly with older models of the series 1 cars, before 2009. On 2009 BMW improved the design of the chain and parts, but still is recommended to replace the chain every 160.000 KM, if the engine has been well maintained. The intake manifold should also be replaced if it has never been cleaned before. This only happens with diesel cars. Anyway, timing chains are not meant to be forever in the engine, eventually all timing chains in all cars will need to be replaced.
@987bonzo7 ай бұрын
I bought an E61 2009 Model last week. 365.000 km and the first chain. The car didn’t get much love the last years, only the services as they were shown in Display. Typical problems EGR, broken crankcase vent and much coal in the intake. Intake cleanded, hose to crankcase replaced, EGR is ordered. The throttle valve is dead by oil in the electric. The chain will be replaced next week, until now there are no bad noises but I won’t push my luck.😅And of course the wires to the trunk are broken so I don’t have central lock nor does the back window open. But the pros of this engine and the zf automatic transmission are a very comfortable car with surprising low diesel consumption. 1400 km with 70 liters are really not bad for an automatic driven station wagon of that size. Yes, much work to do but it is not that expensive and when I’m finished, the car is in a controlled state and the costs are not that bad. Think the technical stuff will sum up to about 2000€, but with that invest all known weaknesses of this car will be gone for about the next 100.000km. I like this engine because most things are good to reach and logically designed. Thank your for your videos!

What would you reckon is a good price for independent garage doing the job including parts (so I guess how many hours labour). He didn't even hear it running before telling me the chains are failing. Kinda ruined my first car experience, because now I feel really worried about it. I checked, and I have the revised model, so I feel a bit better having watched this video, but even if it had been the A rather than the C, I do feel like the doom and gloom around the issue seems to be exaggerated, judging by the number of people driving these cars.

Personally, my chain was replaced by BMW at 60k miles, it went bad again after only 20k miles, considering my oil was done every 8k miles. My mates failed at just under 100k (had to get an engine replacement). In my opinion the N47 is just not worth the hassle, at least in my experience. One of the worse engines I've personally ever owned in a BMW. This also applies to the N43 engine as these suffered from chains and a tone of other issues, almost as if BMW were not able to make any good reliable 4 cylinder engines, at least in the E chassis.

My 520D E61 LCI with a N47D20C 177hp engine and an AT gearbox, I bought it last year, it is now 231 000km, and unfortunately, I heard some snapping noise from the timing chain. Obviously, its former owners were following BMW's oil service interval 30 000km :( , that must be the reason for timing chain problem, I'm completely agree with you in this point. Since I got this car, I did the oil service every 8 000km, but it is too late~~~ I do watch your video about timing chain replacement, really and always wonderful jobs!!! I want to know if the timing chain replacement can be done without engine removing ? I saw someone doing the replacement by removing the AT gearbox on a 520D F10, is it works for a E60/E61 as well ? Another question for the water pump on this engine, I doubt if it could last for that long time ? You did not replace it when you got your drive belt kit done. Since I do not know if that was done or not by its former owners, do you think it is a good idea to replace the water pump as a prevention ? Hope to have your opinion on these questions. Thank you very much. Regards, Song (from France)

@@GeorgeAusters have you heard any of theese to run away on engine oil via the intake side of an old tired turbo, or anti shudder valve should prevent this? Cleaned my intake, did not have to pour oil out of the intercooler, but all the intake is damp and the turbo shaft has free movement front to back.

Could the Start Stop crap be a culprit on the timing chains on those motors? Over here in Dublin Bee-Ems are 99% 2.0 the straight 6s are like hens teeth! But what we advise is to turn that Start/Stop shit off everytime ya get into the motor! If the chain is gonna go that S/S crap ain't gonna help is it?

I have done my timing chain at 70k as I was hearing like a chain noise but when the garage opened it, they advised the chain was not loose nor was there any sign of damage. I nevertheless got it changed as the engine was already opened. I still can hear that chain like noise. Guess it wasn’t that after all. Anyone have the same issue?
@GeorgeAusters4 жыл бұрын
Likely isn’t chain noise. Mine was fine on 120k but best to be done for peace of mind👍🏻

Long life oil service system and dpf killing these engines, in my opinion dpf is even worse because during regeneration diesel is mixed with the oil. When we change the oil in n47,s in most cases Oli is over topped, sometimes there is 2L over the max Oli capacity... Good, well designed engines, long service intervals and dpf, cuts their lives in half or even more
