Great! What a reminiscence this brought on. I lived in Park Slope, Brooklyn late 80's early 90's. This area actually reminds me of my old neighborhood pre-gentrification. It was was a Puerto Rican and Irish area of Park Slope. On the 4th of July, my block was like downtown Beirut. Full of explosions, orange smoke and zooming rockets every night for about a week. You couldn't breathe or see 5 feet in front of you. You could only see the fireworks bursting. For a few days it was a treacherous walk home from the subway after dark but amazing too. The police never shut down the party--just let everybody celebrate. I'm sure they had better things to do. Delicious plantanos, rice and bean dinner for $2.99 on the corner. I'm sure that restaurant's not there anymore. My landlord offered to sell me a first floor, 2 bedroom shotgun condo with 800sf garden rights for $80,000! Coulda shoulda, I knew what was coming, but I was busting loose and headed to the wild wild west. I visited The Cloisters once in the mid/late 80's. It was magnificent, so peaceful, fresh and cool in the summer. I think I remember seeing the Unicorn Tapestries. Don't they live there? I had friends who lived in a rural area of Wash Heights in a pre-colonial hodge-podge house with bits built in early 1700's and parts added 100 years later. NYC, rich tumultuous history. Thanks to you and Noemy for a great tour! (and the opportunity to look back today:)

I was really glad to see this clip on Washington Heights. It is a section of Manhattan that gets overlooked because it is so far from mid town. However it is a treasure. I have been coming up to NYC for years and was always interested by this section of the city. Unfortunately it was not easy to get to if I was doing a day trip up (I live in Philly). I also had always wanted to see The Cloisters. So, last year I decided to do a trip up to NYC just to go up to the Cloisters and Washington Heights. Fort Tryon Park is a treasure affording great views of the Hudson and the George Washington Bridge. The Cloisters is a also worth a visit. From a day tripper standpoint this is really something that you have to specifically plan for. But it is well worth the trip.

I was born and raised in the Heights & lived there for almost 40yrs before finally getting my duck$ lined up so I could move out of NYC completely. Despite all of the positive facts presented in this clip (which are true), there is an underlying fact that isn't so positive about Washington Heights and that concerns the relationship between non Spanish speaking blacks and Dominicans. The relationship is overwhelmingly one of cultural polarization. If you want details just ask any non-Spanish speaking black resident of the Heights and I guarantee that most will tell you the truth about the matter. There's constant separation between the two cultures. The two live upside one another but DO NOT openly mix socially and that's a fact. I am black and know many Spanish words without really speaking Spanish fluently having grown up in the Heights. I've had certain Dominicans say to me 'But you look Dominican!' as though they were paying me a compliment for not looking too black in their eyes (I guess). I never took these type comments as compliments. I made several great friends who were Dominican but to me it seems as though many Dominicans in the Heights are overwhelmingly more welcoming towards white visitors and gentrifiers. I guess seeing whites come through makes them feel like they're getting 'a leg up'. To me it was depressing living in an area where I couldn't fully relate or mix with the majority of the population so I left and I haven't looked back.

Washington Heights and Inwood used to be predominately German-Jewish and Irish. Still , there are pockets of same along Ft Washington Ave and Bennett Ave ( synagogues i.e houses of worship) ) and very few Irish bars along Broadway past 207th St in Inwood..There were even Kosher butchers sprinkled among the neighboring streets. Along Dyckman St west to the Hudson River, there are some interesting Dominican food establishments and a Marina overlooking New Jersey from Inwood Hill Park.. Rents are less expensive up here than anywhere else in Manhattan BUT subway travel downtown via A or # 1 lines can be mentally exhausting if taking them for a good many years, as i have.

The Beautiful Dominican People. I lived there in 1989ish. On 177th & Pinehurst. I really enjoyed it, it was always fun to watch the scavengers dismantling the cars parked on the street. And nothing moves you faster to Columbus Circle than the A Train. Nothing.

This was a wonderful tour with Noemy. Please create more videos like this with other great neighborhoods in the city. Next time you need to visit the little red lighthouse underneath the GW Bridge.

I went to Jumel Mansion when I used to go to my elementary school PS 128, so educational and interesting place to go and explore. Can’t wait to go back to NYC, I’ve been in North Carolina for the past 8 years, and I miss my City so much☹️

I don't know how I missed this video. My mom grew up in Washington Heights in the 20s-40s and went to George Washington HS. My grandfather owned a grocery store on Cabrini Blvd during that time. For some reason, I've never taken the time to check out the neighborhood.

I hope you’ll make a video on The Cloisters, I’ve always been curious about going there! Great video, I learned so much about WH, I’m craving that pink frosting cake at the bakery lol 🍰

most museums won't let you film inside. on a side note if you buy a ticket to either the cloisters or the met you can enter the other within 3 days for free.

@lupechacon-florez75203 жыл бұрын
YES this is my old neighborhood. It is such a pleasure to walk around this neighborhood. On one side it’s bustling and energetic and fun then you go by the water and it’s beautiful and peaceful. The J Hood Wright park was the area where I grew up in right by the water. As you and Noemy mentioned, when I saw the bridge, the JWB, I knew I was headed home. All the best to you stay well.

Did you also know that Washington Heights was the crack capital of America back in the 80s and 90s. However When I met a Rockefeller he informed me that his family had a summer home up in Washington Heights. The summer home was called Fort Tryon And his great great grandfather to ensure that the family had a good view bought the Palisades across the river. Just wanted to share a few things most people don’t know about the Heights

Rally enjoyed this. I grew up in the north Bronx and this was kinda like my back yard. I spent a lot of time in the areas where you were walking
@Sugarcrazy5 жыл бұрын
I looked up the location for the restaurant & found out they have a 2nd location in the Bronx, Punto de Sabor Xpress. I'm in in that area a lot so I checked this restaurant out thanks to hearing about the original location from your video. I got put on hold twice because I didn't Spanish but when I got someone to talk to it was very easy to order ahead. I followed the Google maps to the pinned location & it's pinned 2 blocks away from where it actually is so be warned. The staff was very nice when I went to pick it up. The lunch menu was affordable. The oxtail stew was yummy.

What does "gentrified really mean"? Every neighborhood in the world changes over time. It means no crime, safe streets, good restaurants, women not getting assaulted on the streets. I guess you are against that.
