Great job ranting on this piece of shit. I found it laughable at times too. Ari Aster seems to think if he turns the emotion up to 11 in sequences it makes them unsettling or scary. But to me it has the opposite effect. It's laughably overwrought. And then on top of that you have ridiculous shit like Jughead with his burger crown at the end. I like Toni Collette but she was wasted in this film that honestly should have been a straight up psychological drama about grief and loss and not a horror movie. Gabriel Byrne was thrown away too with a nothing role. And I hated Nat Wolfe's performance and his character. And as a result the film has zero suspense at all in its climax. Just like Midsommar it's well shot and it looks good but it lacks severely in the storytelling and character department.

I think you guys just didn’t get the movie, Hereditary is a brilliant film. Not overrated or bad at all. You just found it disappointing because you don’t like artsy slow burn type movies. So yeah, fuck you guys, this is one of my favorite horror films.

A movie like Session 9 does slow burn way better IMO. But hey, some people like to hate on that movie too and Idgaf. Like what you like. 🤷

My sister and I hated Hereditary too! After all the hype, we went to see it at the theatre, and let's just say, we were not impressed. I love Toni Collette. There was a lot of family drama. That good, but the horror was lacking to me. I didn't get the praise for the movie at all. I was not a fan of Midsommar either. I'm definitely not going to see any more of his "horror" flicks in the theatre.

Hated this movie as well. I don’t get the praise. And what’s frustrating about this movie is it has potential and it has its moments. The acting is good especially from Toni Collette. They’re some effective and creepy moments like when you see the severed head and when her husband gets set on fire but the rest of the film is boring and everything that happens in the film is ruined by the ending. The fucking ending is awful and my biggest problem. I’m tired of fucking cults. Why does every new horror film have to include a cult. This film and Midsommar and insert any new generic horror film that makes millions of dollars at the box office is everything I hate about modern horror. Overrated, stupid, and frustrating. A modern horror classic my ASS!!

I found the film okayish overall. I remember when the trailer came out and I thought "Ah that looks cool!". But when it came out, everyone was saying how disturbing it was, and that It was scarier than The Shining (one of my favorite films) so already I was getting the feeling this might be a bit overhyped. So I finally got round to watching it, and.....I thought yeah it looks well made, acting ain't too bad... had one or two scenes of creepy uncomfortable suspense..but yeah that actual story/shock moments and twists I was just like....meh. I agree that if the story had been solely about dementia or the toll mental illness takes on a family it would have been a much better film. The "spooky cult" stuff kind of disappointed me as I went into the film thinking it was gonna be about what I wish it was about (a family breakdown/psychological thriller). Overall: 6/10

I have to disagree with you I thought this movie was overall pretty good for a psychological horror movie. Not one of my faves but definitely a classic for that genre. It didn't copy other horror movies with jump scares and to me it was pretty original. The director is no Stanley Kubrick though no way lol. Btw Toni Colette was excellent. Cheers to you Matt!

There is nothing I hate more when someone tells somebody that they didn't get a movie because they didn't like it. I did like the movie but sometimes we just need to accept not to understand why someone didn't like a movie we loved.
