A local dealer near Dundee is asking £69,169 for a brand new 2024 Auto-Trail C71. However, after searching on AutoTrader, I found the same model, also 2024, listed for £59,995 automatic gearbox - and you can even get a manual version brand new for £57,495. The market is definitely dropping now. The question is, would you be prepared to drive all the way back to the original dealer to have your van fixed, or would you arrange to go to an Auto-Trail recommended repairer? That might be an option for warranty work if a repairer is closer . What surprises me is that even if a local dealer didn’t sell you the motorhome or caravan, they might still service it for you - but they won’t handle warranty work. And here’s another warning: if you buy a caravan or motorhome brand new from a dealer, then decide to sell it while it’s still under warranty, the new owner might assume they can get warranty work done at the selling dealer. However, the dealer is under no obligation to provide warranty repairs for second owners, even if they sold the vehicle new unless you purchased it from the dealers. So, buyers beware. Sorry i had to add this.
@dgibson52522 ай бұрын
Yes, that's true, the dealers make no margin on warranty work as the hourly rate is slashed by the manufacturer and they get no pay for processing the warranty claim. The rely on potential repeat sales if they look after the customer well. The only way a local dealer were to take on warranty work would be if you offered to top up the warranty work to their normal hourly rate and add in a service or something.

But please can you add one little detail that's quite important to many, I think. - Number of berths and belted seats. However! As some of you responders point out, £60000 plus is still an awful lot of money for a good proportion of the UK populus. £60000 over 10 years, or 120 months, with interest, is going to knock you back, somewhere in the region of £600/month. That is a mortgage price for many! To end on a positive note though, it is good to see that the motorhome/campervan industry recognises this and do try to produce a range that may be within reach of the, more average, earner. Thank you for your reviews.

Great question, @rodbtelenetbe 👍. I didn't look too much at the specs but you'll probably find they are an extra rather than fitted as standard, unless the van is British then they probably are fitted as standard. I could be wrong though. The main reason we have ovens fitted in British motorhomes is because of the weather! We won't always be able to cook and eat outside because it could be raining. @daletinsley295415 күн бұрын
@diilain that was the price for the van AND conversion. As I say the base van was a 2011 Renault trafic 2.0 diesel. So would be the equivalent of a 2015 now. ( I've owned it 4 years now). It's has a genuine professional fitted pop top with mattress and lighting up there. It came with two solar panels feeding two leisure batteries. I've since installed another 150w panel and controller and two 135a lithium batteries that run two inverters ( 400w and a 1000w pure sine wave. They run an induction hob ( at 800w ) and my electric saucepan ( 150/300w ) and electric kettle ( 700w ) with no issues. I also bought a 12v electric blanket. They run at @ 50w. If the leisure batteries drop to below 12v I simply turn a switch and the lithium's are then added. Honestly I've done 7 nights in the Yorkshire dales with the fridge ( 60w ) on permanently. It did come with a durite split charger but they are hit and miss so I added my own manually switched charging system. Anything else you want to know please feel free.

Having looked at buying a new motorhome, I have noticed a huge difference in the build quality and the materials used in the last 3 to 4 years. To be honest I would not waist my money on any new motorhome or car for that matter. You get a better build quality and far superior longevity out of an older van (pre 2020) than you will get from the poor quality vans being sold in todays market. Even the big names like Burstner and Hymer vans are falling apart in weeks of being purchased. You only have to look around the forecourts of the dealers to see the reduction in prices on vans from 2022/23 that they cannot sell. The secondhand market has now become so strong that many dealers are no longer stocking new vans because they have become a financial risk.

Thanks for commenting, @MrSandalwood. It's all about the weight these days rather than the quality, I think. We want them lighter so that we can take more stuff

Still way overpriced for what you're getting. Huge profits for the manufacturers & dealers.

You may be right, @keepitreal1547 but the base vehicle is the most expensive part and everything has gone up in price

Too much greed in this country.. never afford one unless you get in dept or rich or win lottery.. just sad seeing all those camper parked up doing nothing for years.. its a pity..

And now the bubble has burst and millions of £££ of vans are still to be sold, @seanrobson1 . I'm sure they'll drop in price next year

Thanks for commenting, @brianswanson4921 but I think new vans are much more expensive than 24k these days.

overpriced junk in my opinion! 60/80k to slide a toilet out for a pee? come on and some of them plastic doors like the dethleffs i think it was were pound shop items! and cost cutting on taking the ladder or steps away from the fixed bed and just cutting a hole in to stick your foot in? ive seen better self builds.
