Depends on where you are. I am dutch and when diving in the Netherlands, I see a lot of Pagurus walking around, and quite a lot of whelks too. It could be an easier idea when those companies processing whelks or others snails, somehow make sure these shells are thrown back into the sea.

I heard from Ms. Madsen who runs the Crab Central Station channel that hermit crabs will nibble off parts of the shell to make it fit better. Wouldn't the crab injure themself if they tried to nibble a glass shell? Or just not be able to modify the shell to a more comfortable/custom fit? This is why I'm against glass shells for hermit crabs.

The glass shells are quite popular in the US. So this European Sea Life tried it for a while. There were always enough natural shells around. Every time the crab chose this glass one, it quickly changed into a natural shell soon after. Hence I could film this. No worries. Cheers, Eugène

The crab in the video did not like this shell and every time he tried it, it was not long before moving to another one. Hence I could film this.
