@@Zoo_Wild My intention is to scatter the shells on the beaches where the crabs live, so that the crabs can use them. I know it sounds weird, but it will help grow the crabs that hunt the those companies. another words, they help them for themself.

@@davidperets9997 Hermit crabs sometimes have difficulties finding a good shell, also since people collect them. So allow me not to like that idea. Maybe arrange Whelk shells at a fish restaurant or fish market?

@@Zoo_Wild You're missing the point, putting artificial shells on the beaches for the crabs to help them, to help the crabs.
@Zoo_Wild
@Zoo_Wild 3 жыл бұрын
@@davidperets9997 Ahhhh, sorry. Now I get it. What a unique idea. But who will pay for that? And do the hermit crabs really need that? Guess they are not that endangered. Not sure. Depends on where you are. I am dutch and when diving in the Netherlands, I see a lot of Pagurus walking around, and quite a lot of whelks too. It could be an easier idea when those companies processing whelks or others snails, somehow make sure these shells are thrown back into the sea.

Hermit crabs prefer shells that spiral tot he right, but will use ‚left spiralling shells‘ too if there is no other option. It seems however that all hermit crabs have abdomens (butts) that curl tot he right. This curling of a symmetrical abdomen starts in their larval phase. Cheers, Eugène

I heard from Ms. Madsen who runs the Crab Central Station channel that hermit crabs will nibble off parts of the shell to make it fit better. Wouldn't the crab injure themself if they tried to nibble a glass shell? Or just not be able to modify the shell to a more comfortable/custom fit? This is why I'm against glass shells for hermit crabs.
