When I got a copy back in the day, (which I no longer have, unfortunately), I pulled 4 copies of the fillable sheet and went over to the library and spent $1 in nickels to make photocopies as I didn't want to run out of the originals; it's what you did before the common use of pdfs and cost-effective printers. :)

I do not believe the fully modeled plastic furniture are strictly an improvement. They are an improvement for the hobbyist who will paint them. To everyone else. The old versions being a mix of plastic and fully colored cardboard, offer a much more dynamic and beautiful piece, nearly right out of the box
@boardwithpaint
@boardwithpaint 2 жыл бұрын
I don't disagree with you there. As a painter I'm obviously biased in that way. But realistically, this game has a lot of pieces to paint in it, and the furniture is probably going to be last for most people. So it could be a long time before you are playing with fully colored pieces.

With the exception of the monster cards definitely much preferred the older artwork, more Frazetta, less World of Warcraft. The monster card artwork I think is probably the way it is in the original in order to be able to easily recognize the game models from the cards.

The plastic from the originals is harder, but more brittle. I've got several broken ones in that box (granted I haven't taken very good care of it over the years). The 2021 minis are a little bit flexible, but still much harder than most minis from modern board games (like from CMON or FFG), so I think the extra durability is a big improvement.
@boardwithpaint

@NICK Van DAM If you've got a complete original version, then I don't really see much need to buy the new one, unless you really like the new art and minis. It's effectively the same game. The Mythic Tier content might be worth it, but I'm not sure if that will even be available at retail.

What I like about the new version is how they have been continuing to support it with new releases. The latest one being "Rise of the Dread Moon." It's pretty awesome in that it has overlays that allow you to convert the board to streets and courtyards with small buildings. I also like the "story" campaign in it. I've also been happy for the new heroes that have been introduced in the boxed supplements including the Rogue and the Knight as well as alternate versions of some of the heroes. So far, I'd have to say that "The Frozen Horror" supplement is still my favorite. Barely beating out "Rise of the Dread Moon." I'm also happy that there's still a robust online community that provides all sorts of support for the game such as new quests, new overlays, and new heroes, villains and monsters. Also better, more useful, versions of the character sheets.

The fully sculpted plastic doors and furniture are more durable and have good details, but if you are not going to paint anything (as most normal people probably wouldn't), the old plastic/cardboard furniture looks way better out-of-the-box. Edit: Oh, and I really like the original miniatures WAY more. The 40k styles, especially with orcs, is much cooler than the generic "brute orc". The old skeleton is much more "clear" in what it represents. The new one is again generic "new" skeleton. Maybe more real, but much more "messy".
@bingobongo1615

I agree. I also think the cards and other stuff look better in the new version (except the Elf... wtf?) but the miniatures are really hit and miss. Prefer the Barbarian at on the original. His eyes. There is that hint of manic/panic. He's going to do his job - but he needed to get psyched up first. His swing of the blade is something he does from necessity rather than vocation. The new box - the eyes have that cold, cynical killer look. He's a professional killer - doing what he does, and it comes naturally to him. I get that some people might prefer that. But I like the extra bit of humanity and feeling in the original. It told a story. Just through the eyes and expression of the Barbarian. To me at least anyway.
@boardwithpaint
@boardwithpaint 2 жыл бұрын
I really only looked at the artwork in broad strokes - oh they've got the same pose - oh the monsters are in the same place. But now that I look more closely, I totally see what you mean! In the new one, the barbarian clearly thinks he's an invincible killing machine. In the original, he "hopes" he's an invincible killing machine.

I got this game for christmas 30 years ago, and it always bugged me that after serving the military and finding my own place to live, this game was lost. Been waiting for the day it would re-surface. Because it is a very well made game. Happy to see all the furniture now is through and through plastic. I totally agree that the zombies from the original with the cleaver looked way better than the new. But overall, I think they did an amazing job. The worst part is the chaos warriors, those were my favorites with the little sphere on top, but the new dread warriors looks very good, so I'll live with it. I played this with my brothers so many times. I think we used up all of the character sheets. I have put in an order for it and for two of the expansions as well, waiting for it like a kid on christmas eve! :) Oh, and can't wait to paint it all. I'm most familiar with the 1990 edition in north america. I know there was the 1989 premiere release in the UK (the "age 9 to adult" on the front instead of "age 10 to adult" is something I look for, as well as the term "game system" that appeared in our release). I had to familiarize myself with the EU ('89 and then second edition '90) rules thanks to sites like yeoldeinn nearly two decades ago. interesting stuff but it appears they used the US version as a base but did certainly incorporate some things ported over from the EU edition with some odd changes (like not restricting the hand axe from the Wizard, making the Holy Water into a purchasable piece of equipment, etc).

I remember the old version and even with rose tinted glasses I reckon they've smashed the new version out of the park. Right balance of nostalgia and improvements. Sure the minis are PVC so not as detailed as the latest GW minis but they are first and foremost playing pieces so need to be hard wearing. This new set is so difficult to read, the figures are overdetailed and lack the imperfections. Like the new Orcs look like full on prepared warriors, as the old Orcs look more brute-ish and grabbed the nearest weapon they could find - which is fitting in the dungeon theme. The old Orcs are also imperfect body-wise and I personally think that also fits better. I wish I could love the new set but the head-to-body aspect ratio (small heads), unreadable busy designs make this a no-go for me. And the box art....While maybe some people say is a good attempt, the original art was of such a high level that this feels half-assed to me. Probably nostalgia talking though, who knows.

One thing about the original Hero Quest back in the day was it's insane value, it was only around £20 when it released here in the UK which was ridiculously cheap even for the time, especially when you consider what was in the box. I actually don't think the rerelease is unreasonabley priced when compared to modern contemporaries though and a good condition of the original will ironically probably cost you even more.

From the looks of it, they basically took the old basic set and add ons(which I'm not sure if you could get in stores, never saw them) in one package. I know that for rights ownership they'd have to redo some things if they re did the Advanced Hero Quest game tho, as they can't use the Skaven.

I never played Advanced HQ (don't even think it was available in the US), but from what I understand it's quite similar to Warhammer Quest and uses terrain tiles instead of a single board. Contemporary games with modular boards (Descent, Imperial Assault, Gloomhaven, etc.) obviously continued in that vein and are likely better games. HQ, for me, is kind of the perfect storm of nostalgia and simplicity.

The main problem I had with the Fimir is that he was "just another green dude". With Orcs and Goblins already in the game, I thought they just blended in too much. As someone that doesn’t paint terrain I prefer the old terrain as it had colored cardboard mixed with the cardboard that gave it character. All the furniture in the new version is smaller than the original which seems really strange given that the board spaces are actually larger. I completely understand about the new furniture being bland if unpainted. If you wanted to improve that with some fairly low effort you could spray the terrain with gray or brown paint and then do an ink wash over it to pop out the details. Might still be a little monochrome but you'd be surprised how much difference that little bit makes.

While you might think that the new version with fully sculpted pieces is better, and if your focus is to paint all the pieces, there may be some merit to this line of thought, however, if you *don't* paint, the cardboard inserts, especially if they are in good condition, look pretty good, and add colour to the furnishings and doors. Of course, appeal is subjective. I have also owned my set since it was released, and was well cared for and is in very good condition, and has the advantage of being less of an impact on the purse than the contemporary version. I am looking forward to seeing new expansions for this release, which I hope to add to my legacy set.
@boardwithpaint
@boardwithpaint 2 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. I'm certainly biased towards those who do. So far they've only released the two expansions that were available back in the day: Kellar's Keep and Return of the Witch Lord. The Mythic Tier came with some additional quest books, including all-new characters and some unique enemies - I don't think they'll be available at retail, though. On the other hand, none of the rules seem to have been materially changed, so anything new that DOES come out and is available should integrate seamlessly with the original. Just keep in mind the new miniatures are at a little larger scale than the originals.
