I firmly believe that we solo female travelers should also learn ways to defend ourselves. Not all of us have time to take self-defense classes however, so I'd like to share some tips which I have learned in my self-defense classes. I've been taking Krav Maga for women classes for self-defense and I've learned that the best self- defense targets on a mans body for women, and the best ways of striking them are as follows: - the eyes (finger poke them) - the nose (palm heel strike upwards) - the throat (chopping like actions) - the testicles (knee / kick / punch / slap / grab-twist-pull and *hold on to them tightly* until he collapses and passes out within a matter of seconds) - the knees (sideways kick to dislocate) I've been taught that even a trained, determined teenage girl could easily take down a man if she goes for these targets, especially if she goes *fast* and *hard* for the *eyes* or the *testicles* (or "high balls" and "low balls" as I've also heard them called.) If he's removed his trousers and he is about to rape you, then his testicles will now be *extremely vulnerable* to a "grab, twist, pull and hold" counterattack, and you should keep squeezing and pulling them as hard as you can (you can even use both hands, and it's still just as effective even if you only manage to get hold of one testicle) until he passes out in under 8 seconds. When a man has his testicles forcefully squeezed it causes him to curl over and quickly lose all of his strength no matter how big and strong he is - great for women to know about. This technique has actually saved many women throughout the world. I hope that someone can read about, learn and share these tips. We can stay safe if we know how and where to strike if ever we are attacked.

As a dude reading this comment, it hurt just thinking about this, lol. Girls should definitely go for the testicles if some man's trying to assault them because it's one of the easiest ways to bring the assault to a halt.

As a guy who's grown up in a rough area I can tell you if a girl tried to punch me in the balls ( doesn't hurt if you get beat up often) that would only end up escalating the situation. Don't defend yourself. You're a girl who's likely a third my weight. One good punch from me and you're comatose, I pull a knife you're dead, I have a gun you're dead. Never defend yourself best advice for a girl or guy. What you do do is run. Distract him and run. He grabs you run and get free. Once you're free keep running.

I actually highly recommend Amsterdam to solo travellers. I am a 19 year old Dutch girl and recently moved close to Amsterdam (after living in Australia for 11yrs) I go there almost every week and have been clubbing there, to me it feels like a very safe place (even the red light district). There are always many people around and everyone speaks English. Plus it is very easy to explore the amazing city on foot! Flying Pig Hostel near central station is a great place to stay, my friend works there and it is in the perfect location and there are always friendly people there! Enjoy!

My parents did a lot of traveling. Cruising , Mexico and Europe. And my mother learned through observation; don't bring real diamonds, bring costume jewellery. There are some awesome "fake" jewellery pieces out there. They honestly look like the real deal. I still have her "fake" diamond engagement ring. I think the ring itself might be 18k, but I'm not sure. Also, because she knew she would be sitting at the Captain's table at least once during a cruise, she packed one very dressy outfit. But it would be in two pieces; a good jacket and a good skirt. That way she could use the jacket with another outfit to give it a nice look. She would wait until her favorite outlet stores were having big blowout sales and go find great designer wear at about 70% off. She ALWAYS looked VERY well turned out. The clothes she used for traveling were all very luggage friendly; light weight, wrinkle resistant and also able to be washed by hand in a sink and hung to dry. And everything had to go with a few other pieces. I don't travel because I have health issues. But I remember her excitement and the way planned for months in advance for those trips.

Another good thing about wearing your backpack on the front is it keeps people from groping you on a crowded subway. I always just wear a simple steel band when I travel, unless I'm just visiting family. That way I don't have to worry about my rings getting stolen or misplaced. I take them off when I put on lotion or in the shower.

Great advise, actually best advise ever for anyone traveling overseas. Missed only one thing, know where the nearest embassy or consulate and/or know the number for the Duty Officer and/or the RSO and program it in your phone and write it down and put it some place safe. Also, know how to dial it, perhaps call it at least once just to say hi. If you get into some real trouble call ASAP for ADVICE don't wait till things get out of hand. That said, please understand that if you did something dumb the Embassy is not there to rescue you, get you out of jail, or give you money if you ran out, or give you a ticket home. They will help you contact your family, help get a lawyer (if you did something stupid), or help replace lost travel documents. It always a good idea to check in with the Embassy if you are traveling in a sketchy country. Also its never a bad idea to call the Marine guard and ask them where is a good place to hang out. THIS VIDEO PROVIDED GREAT ADVICE WATCH IT MANY MANY TIMES, AND TAKE NOTES. IT JUST MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE.

Hi Shayla. Thanks for these tips. I plan to travel to Paris at some point. Hopefully not alone but this is good in case it is.

It's kind of handy and also sad that as a Colombian, the biggest part of this tips are survival rules every time I step outside my door... For us it's just common sense (that's why it's not that easy to stole from a Latino)

Hahahah truth. We didn’t grow up with this knowledge. I’ve heard from so many people this is just obvious everyday information for a ton of people. And also people who are shocked by the information! It really depends where you grow up! I didn’t know this stuff until I started traveling!

Great tips for travelling solo! My friend just got back from travelling solo for a year and a half. She had a blast and I’m jealous that that I haven’t travelled solo yet.

Pacsafe make purses and bags that have steel mesh in the fabric and steel wire through the strap. They guarantee that it won't get cut and stolen. Especially the razor folks who cut your bag while you're in a crowd. I keep hard copies of my docs as well as a flash drive sewn into the hem of my pants (a little pocket bit). Most SD cards are waterproof so you can have one in a hem of a shirt and keep your critical data there too. Love your vids. Stay safe.

Invest in a Riut Bag R35. It has the zippers on the back side so no one has access. Never want another bag I own 4 Riuts in different sizes. So relaxed in a crowded place. Also invest in a pacsafe handbag. Slash proof and other security features. I found great tips at 'her packing list'.

This is great! I find that solo travel really opens up your mind and options. It's not as hard to stay safe if youre careful.

Use your common sense!!! Don’t look foreign, don’t look lost, never say to none you traveling by yourself, don’t drink a lot, don’t walking in dark places by yourself at night, be aware from your surroundings

URUGUAY!!! My college roommates family was from there. The Spanish there is so different. “E-sh-a vamos a la play-sh-a para una quesadi-sh-a.” I loved listening to her speak!

No google map, but Here map!!! Agree to look poor! In France, they give you a special paper proffing you had a French passport to change it! I dont' agree about drinking and drugging! Latin America is the best place to drug, it's so cheap! Cool advices, cool rhythm! #YTCM

These are really good "common sense" tips, sometimes common sense isn't so common x'D so it's really good to see stuff laid out simply here. From travelling with my family, I usually try to keep a low profile and make sure I have copies of important documents and information with me when I travel, it's really important! Really liked the video :D

I travel all the time by myself. Great tips I use often. I live in a large city so honestly... You'll be ok if you live in a busy city it's likely the same... And I use a high quality Patagonia bag.. Zips at the top... Not easy to take anything. But great tips!
