The time has come to build a better and stronger front axle for the Ranger! We are building a 609 axle combining the best parts from a Ford 9 inch and a Dana 60. In this episode, we build a high pinion 9-inch third member from True Hi 9. It gets a set of 5.13 gears and a Yukon Grizzly Locker.

After watching the video a few thoughts... 1. You have been holding out on us, Chris. I see that Chevy in the background 2. Loved the extra editing touches in the video. 3. Shop tour with specialty tools and favorite tool brands along with future plans as far as tool organization and purchases would make a GREAT video. 4. Thanks for the informative video. 5. Where is Kris hiding? Did you subordinate him again! Lol

Great feedback Josh! 1. That's Chris's wife's GMC Yukon 2. Thanks for noticing, we always are trying make better, higher quality videos 3. That's a good idea for a video, we will keep that in mind 4. Thanks for watching, we really do appreciate it! 5. Kris is probably tucked in a small hiding hole somewhere waiting to pop out 🤣

Awesome video. I bought a td machine pinion depth gauge which is awesome, but setting up the depth on a third member looks a lot easier than a traditional axle housing. Looking forward to seeing the rest of this series for sure. I’m going to check out Tru high 9 because I was thinking of spidertrax axle housings for my Jeep.

Sorry but from time to time , I might ask a question that's out there , but I come from a racing round track family . And I haven't really met anyone around me to pick there minds about 4x4's . I did however take my CJ7 into a shop for the death wobble . And $1,600 later still had it .

Did you put a new pinion nut on after removing the first one? As far as I know, the pinion nut is a one time use and can't be reused after removing due to the factory lock tite on the nut. I use an old nut to set preload/depth and then use the new one for final install.

Hua I wonder how this would do in a drag racing application tbh. Looks pretty dam strong and I’m assuming would definitely shave some weight off your standard 9” or 14bolt setup and unsprung weight is killer does hi 9 make a billet third or cast aluminum one?

Would it be a good idea to put a pump on top of one of your tubes ? That way your cycling fluid faster , keeping it cooler ? Or am I over thinking ?
@RecklessWrenchGarage
@RecklessWrenchGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Cycling fluid faster doesn’t cool it, it actually increases temps. If you cycle it through a cooler, that’s another story, but I wouldn’t say it’s necessary.

I just ordered my hi9 for the rear and want to know if the 3rd member has a drain or if I would need to install a drain plug on the housing like I saw in one of your other video's?
@RecklessWrenchGarage
@RecklessWrenchGarage 3 жыл бұрын
There is a drain plug on the third member, so you don't have to put one in the housing. I'm jealous you have one for the rear, I want another for the rear axle

@@RecklessWrenchGarage awesome! Good to know! Yeah, I'm super excited to get my TJ back together! Wasn't my plan to do this right now, but unfortunate situations in the rear and solutions were needed! Thanks for the info. Hope to see you out in the Puerco some day.

Did you say Hi 9 told you the load bolt would have .150 inch clearance between the ring gear and load bolt? Over 1/8 inch? If the ring gear ever deflected over 1/8 inch, you would need to order a new 3rd member, because yours would be scrap metal! Perhaps Hi 9 meant to say .015" ?

What is the price for the whole kit from Hi9 I'm really interested I'm trying to ditch my ford 8.8 from my 95 bronco(due to my axle shafts coming out from the axle itself maybe my axle is done for) and upgrade to a ford 9 inch but I need the high pinion clearance for when I go do some crawling I don't have to worry to much about a rock hitting the low pinion version a high pinion will give me more ease when crawling up in big bear
@RecklessWrenchGarage
@RecklessWrenchGarage 10 ай бұрын
I would suggest reaching out to Hi9 to ask. It has been a while since this was put together and prices for most things have changed the last few years.

@@RecklessWrenchGarage huge fan of the 9"/10" stuff but with the stuburbans weight and power would be better off with a torq14 imo. Have a buddy who was running hi9 front and rear in a yota buggy. Got tired of gear issues and built a rear torq14 hasn't looked back sense
@RecklessWrenchGarage
@RecklessWrenchGarage 4 жыл бұрын
I feel like if the hi 9 stuff is good for ultra 4, it should be good for the Ranger. The 10" parts work in trophy trucks, and if you break that stuff in a trail rig you need to reconsider some life choices 🤣 I have no experience with Torq14 axles, I have just heard unpleasant things about service
