@@ryanusa860 I think most complaints can be traced to the tolerances and how stiff the gun is from the factory. The gun really needs to be broken in before it's judged on reliability. I've fired about 500 rounds through mine of hollow points and fmj rounds. You've probably seen people complain that the magazine springs are really hard to load or the thumb safety is hard to toggle which were both true in my case but after two shooting sessions it feels much much better. I can load the mags fully after a few load/unload cycles and the thumb safety went from really hard to toggle, to what I would describe as perfect. The recoil spring and slide racking was very stiff from the factory and some of my very first rounds fired had a failure to feed from the slide snapping back too quickly but once it loosened up a tiny bit, it hasn't done it since. Buy one, shoot a few hundred rounds through it and I think you'll have the same conclusion. This gun is just so small and the tolerances very tight accordingly.

@williamstaggs9285Күн бұрын
I agree with you on this. I don't want to get shot by any caliber either. Call me crazy, but that's just me. LOL I feel like some people forget that 380 and 9mm are the same diameter. Which, to me, means they will make the same size hole. Just 380 won't penetrate as far, or maybe not do as much damage as 9mm. But for me, it's close enough. Also, keep in mind that 380 is not a "range" round and is really meant for up close and personal. At least, in my humble opinion. I proudly carry my Bersa Thunder 380 single stack. It's concealable, lightweight and I have the Firestorm finger grips on mine. Fun to shoot and highly accurate. I've considered getting the Bersa Plus for the extra capacity, but I kind of like the single stacks better. I carry 2 extra mags, for a total of 24 rounds(8 per mag, I don't do the +1). Should be plenty, and if I need more, then I am in need of some police backup! LOL
@BrandonsCool1Күн бұрын
@williamstaggs9285 exactly! Underwood xtreme defender 90 grain and other 380 and 9mm share sometimes the same bullet. We all have seen 380 under penetrate, and some over penatrate, neither of those would I want aimed at my heart or head or any other piece of me. If someone loaded up a slingshot with a metal ball bearing and asked for my wallet, they can have it lol. That bersa is a solid choice and couldn't agree more. I also would say j frames I also like along with my regular pocket gun being the first bodyguard in 380, extra mag. 12 rounds of xtreme defender. Sometimes due to enviorment or conditions, I can't carry more. But I agree completely with your comment and couldn't of said it better.

Another advantage of CCW in .380, is sound energy. Especially in closed quarters, like a bedroom or restaurant...and close up. No time to put on ear protection. .380 in subsonic might cause a little ringing in the ears for an hour or two...but unlikely any permanent damage to yourself or innocent bystanders. 9mm on the other hand, in self defense loads, can be just the opposite. It's why also I load .38 special subsonic in my CCW S&W revolver, instead of 357 Magnum. To me, it's a huge issue. I do not subscribe to the 'better lifelong tinnitus than being dead'. I do not want to suffer for years because of some creep. At self defense distances, .380 and 38 Special is worth the tradeoff...both being effective enough for most situations. In longer distance situations, I carry .45 Auto, all subsonic...a nice 'boom'...and just a few hours of ear ringing. Bless you, sir. She was so terrified that won’t ever try it again. Not everyone can handle 9mm. I will have her try the 380 after she enjoys the 22lr a bit more.

I came from a large family. When the entire clan gets together, to include very peripherally acquainted or friends, there are always "new" people to meet. It started with my sister and my wife who are the same age. They wanted to learn to shoot, get a pistol, get a license, and carry. We did a lot of "learning to shoot" and safety FIRST. 9mm was too much. 380? Much better. Word gets out, hey this old 28yr Army veteran does know what he is doing. All the relatives (women) and their offspring and friends and family from their spouses side of their extended families were all calling and coming out to the ranch to learn firearms so they could carry. Lots of the Smith EZ guns, etc. were purchased. I trained soldiers forever. When training women I use the same techniques. Around guns I approach it quietly, calmly. You want everyone calm, not about to crap themselves. Long story short, yes, A gun is better than no gun, even a 380. I like a G19 myself, but that works for me. Everyone is different.

I bought one of the S&W 380 EZ Slide pistols in 380 a few years ago for my wife as a house gun. She couldn't rack the slide of the Ruger LCP but can easily handle the S&W. Also the larger size grip frame makes recoil way more manageable in the larger gun. I really like the gun too as it is easy to hit with. With modern bullets, the 380 can be a decent defense round.

In addition to it being softer recoiling, there are inexpensive handguns like the Ruger Security 380 with very easy to rack slides. I sell the latter to customers who like a backup handgun together with their main and usually bigger carry pistol.

I carry a Ruger LCP Max in 380 because it gives me 12+1 in a concealable pocket carry. It's much more comfortable then belt carrying and as a result it gets carried more than my glock. It's absolutely a stiff and tight gun from the factory in all aspects. The magazine is hard to load initially, the thumb safety was hard to toggle and the recoil spring was also very stiff. After putting a few hundred rounds through it, the gun is much much easier to use. It racks smoother and is easier to load. I sat and worked the thumb safety while watching TV like it was a fidget toy and now, it's what I would describe as "perfect". This gun definitely needs a break in period. Put a few hundred rounds through it before you decide anything. A cleaning/lubing cycle really helps too.

What's happening is similar to what happened with 9mm and .40. Bullet design improved and powder making it so there wasn't much difference in performance. 9 was less recoil and less wear and tear on pistols. Now bullet designs like the Lehigh stuff is making it so that .380 can give impressive performance while being smaller, lighter, easier to shoot and easier to rack. We then come to what I think is the main point. Can you run it better and hit better with it. Can you be faster? More likely to have it on you? There are valid reasons .380 is coming back. Truth be known guns the size most of us are caring is what .380 is really for.

Shot placement is key. A 9mm is no good if you can't shoot it properly. A .22 rimfire can work if you shoot it well. Most self defense encounters are with 3 to 5 feet, and that range anything will work if place your shots in the vitals. I like 9mm as it strikes a good balance. But 9mm is far from the only choice for carry.

I’ve been carrying and using .380 walther pp for over 40 years. As a backup and carry. When you’re in an urban area the 9mm has a real problem. Depending upon your ammo used, they will go through your target. I’ve seen 9mm go through 2-3 walls. .380 will not do that even with ball ammo. So if you don’t want to shoot anything but your target. Be aware of your surroundings and the caliber you’re using.
