I've also noticed a surge in interest in 40 both in person and online lately. Part of that is due to ammo shortages and people wanting something to shoot, and the other is I think people just wanting something different. I know this... In 2019 and 2020, when all the shelves were empty of 9s, 45s, even and especially 22s and 410s... 40s were nearly always available.
@009013M3Ай бұрын
I didn't have any problems sourcing 9mm until about March of 2020. Which was fine because I don't wait until after an emergency to supply myself. Buying ammo *after* emergency is declared is a bit like putting your seatbelt on after a collision. That, and .40 S&W only held out a couple weeks after 9mm and 5.56 did. The only thing we had here on the shelves was .350 Legend because the state hadn't legalized hunting with rifles yet.
@oaksparoakspar3144Ай бұрын
The same was true back in 2012 in the post-SH rush on guns and ammo during the Obama admin. When everything else was gone or sold the second it hit the shelf to be resold online for insane profit, the .40 was still something you could regularly find and buy at regular prices. Not sure if that will always be the case, since FAR fewer LEO's carry .40 and the market share is much smaller for it today than it was even a decade ago. It won't go away, but it won't be certain to be on the shelves and will be slow to return after a rush, since the machines will all be producing the common rounds.

I found the gun to be accurate and I never had a recoil problem. As a patrol officer in my early days, I carried either a python or an S&W model 66. A .357 KICKS. A 40 cal only Kicks. You get used to it. On the street I carried model 22 mags in my mag pouch, so I never really felt that I was under-loaded. I like 9mm weapons. I love the 40 cal round and 40 cal weapons. Agreed. Paul H’s 40 video was a classic. My old police department switched from 9 to 40 after testing how each did extensively, especially through windshields, etc. Ultimately, my department went back to 9 like everyone else did, but the purpose was for capacity and some officers scores were slightly better when qualling with 9. That said, those officers were the ones who rarely shoot unless they are qualifying or going through the shoot house etc. The 40 on a dueling tree shows the difference in power for sure.

My cousin even shot his 9mm and mine side by side and said it was about the same recoil. But to my surprise, I was shooting my Shield (which was snappier and more difficult to shoot) more effectively than my XD just recently! I figured that it was my determination to shoot it effectively after taking two classes back to back two weeks ago. I did poorly and was disappointed. The instructor suggested I change to 9mm but I was determined to get it right. Two weeks later both of us were surprised because I shot my Shield very effectively with all shots center mass in a tight group at 25 yards. I even shot a whole twice at least 2 times. Going to the gym for weight training and swimming has probably contributed to my improvement. It just goes to show that you might surprise yourself and improve even better than you expected.

Being retired law enforcement of 30+years, my last duty weapon was a Glock 22. Like most retirees my age we started our career with revolvers. The questions I'm going to ask is this, back in the revolver days cops used that same revolver for their entire career. Now the next one is this , if the 40 is so hard on guns why are cops constantly turning in their 9mm semi-autos every few years. Is the +P and +P+ 9mm ammo beating guns to death. The chamber pressures on the 9mm +P is the same as the 40 and I'm quite sure the +P+ 9mm is even higher.
@mattlthАй бұрын
The best part about the .40 S&W being less popular (either in perception or reality) is the prices on ammunition have come way down. 50 round boxes of Federal HST .40 S&W are roughly $5.00 less than the 9mm version. Since most of my EDC autos are .40 S&W, that's a win for me, and it allows me to always train with my carry ammo without fretting about the cost.

That's why I love my G22. I found i like and shoot .40 well to begin with but the ability to swap over to what is essentially a G17 using nothing but an aftermarket conversion barrel and a G17 magazine is great. I have a 9 conversion kit for mine and it runs fine without even changing the extractor or recoil spring though YMMV. I found out you can even shoot 9mm out of .40 mags and it cycles but i never tested that with more than a few dozen rounds so I wouldn't trust my life to it. It can also be converted to a .357 SIG (G31) if that's your thing or you want something a little spicier or exotic. The old Gen3/4 used police trade in G22s that you see at steep discounts are well worth the money, great defensive pistols to begin with but the ability to convert it to 9mm or .357 SIG with extreme ease adds another layer of value to them.

Locally, I’ve only seen one “failure” with the .40 S&W, and that was a really messed-up “spray and pray” situation. The rest were successful defensive shootings involving one or two shots (on target). Even with older JHP bullet designs, it did what it was supposed to. As such, it was (and still is) a very-effective defensive round, for those who can manage it.

For the record: the M&P 9 has the same grip size. The M&P series was built around the 40 S&W, then adapted down to the 9mm. The only thing they really changed is the magazine, barrel, and recoil spring. The M&P is a great pistol though, love my 40.

In my opinion .40 is far from dead. Its surprisingly a versatile cartridge. Likely a sales ploy to discontinue it because with a barrel or slide switch you easily can run .357 sig, 9mm and .22. Hearing you can also reload to 10mm capacity, pretty much making it a 30-06 vs .308 debate.

9mm ballistics have NOT improved- this is the fallacy. 9x19 has the same or even less energy than it had 30 years ago. Bullet performance against barriers is a bit better now but it was not that which led to effectiveness in stops. The 9BPLE is ancient but still a better round for terminal effect than the majority of "modern" bullets. People can watch video after video of high round count OIS's and continue to claim that 9x19 ballistics are worlds better than they were back when...9x19 was having high round count OIS.

In the military I was issued s Sig Legion, got pretty good with that one, and appreciated the capacity. The P-250 is DAO with no external safties, it's a self decocker as well. Best of both revolver and semi auto worlds. Still EDC my P-250, own a couple of other Signs as well as revolvers, and a Glock .45cal. Bought the wife one and she has gotten pretty good with it and carrys it every day. Long story short, I have seen the effects of 9mm and .40cal on stopping a threat. I have seen bad guys survive multiple 9mm hits, even hollow points, I have never seen one survive a .40cal double tap. That is why we carry .40's.

My Department carried a SIG 229 in 40 S&W for years. I wasn't really a SIG man until I was issued that gun. The 40S&W has a very snappy recoil and can slow you down getting back on target when shooting fast. In a steel frame gun its pretty pleasant to shoot. That said, I had an H&K USP 40 that was just to light for the 40. The HK was very accurate but almost impossible to fast fire accurately as all its weight was in the slide which made barrel climb just awful. The Glock 27 was one 40 I should have never sold, as I loved that gun.
@GlassJ0eАй бұрын
Love my 229. 7 round mag is a trade off for sure though. That gun is so comfortable to shoot due to the metal frame and beefy slide. My 9mm’s aren’t nearly as easy to handle because the polymer frames vibrate so darn much.

I've made sure to keep a .40 in my inventory since I got started back in the late 2000's. Having an extra barrel for .357 SIG was just icing on top.
