I am a Veteran from Afghanistan and Iraq. I personally carry concealed the 357 Sig. I know how the 9mm and various other cartridges work on human targets. I have seen a lot of them first hand. Here is a little input, what most people wont tell you about them. From our perspective, Virtually every pistol round is nearly identical for the most part, with the exception of rounds with rifle like speeds that cause enormous wound channels. They move at a velocity of only 900 to 1200fps, Pretty much right at the speed of sound and no matter what caliber you get, Its limited like that. 45ACP, 9mm, 380, 40SW 38special and even the 22 calibers. All fire about the speed of sound. The practice of using it effectively to incapacitate a violent attacker hyped up on adrenaline is pretty much to dump the entire magazine into the target. Its kinda brutal. Watch how police do it using their 9mm glocks. They have a backup officer, and both of them will shoot an entire mag into the target. Thats just how its done with 9mm. They pull the trigger til the magazine is empty then call an ambulance. Thats the police combat training method of self defense with 9mm. Its also the same for the military with that caliber. Higher velocity rounds work different. For example rifle rounds. Lets consider the 30-30 rifle. They dont need to be as heavy. They move much faster and that speed translates to a different type of wound channel that is noticeably more effective in combat and in self defense. We can all agree that a single shot of 30-30 is far more effective at doing the job than a single shot of 9mm. 30-30 ammo is very light. Its normal bullet weight ranges between 125gr and 170gr. While the most common rounds are around 140 grain bullets. Its velocities are in the range of 2000ish feet per second. 357 Sig has one thing that most other pistol bullets out there dont have. Velocity. And a lot of it. This is what separates it from the crowd. While its not literally 30-30 level of power, the 357 sig ammo routinely hits and exceeds 1500+ feet per second using 125 grain bullets, 115gr bullets are over 1700fps. Rifle like speeds. Grizzly Ammo makes a 357 sig with a 90 grain Hollow Point when shot out of a 4 inch barrel will achieve 1900 feet per second at 721 foot pounds of energy. That is indeed within the realm of rifle like velocities, and energy slightly higher than a 10mm. The 357 sig reacts in ballistics gel like a rifle bullet. Likewise it would in self defense. The 357 sig is in my opinion, The single most deadly automatic pistol bullet ever made in a Glock automatic frame from the factory. Its a true manstopper every bit equivalent to the 10mm in automatic hand guns which also top out around 600ish foot pounds of energy. The Sig chambered pistols just does it in a smaller frame that normal people can grip. While it is true that modern police have switched back to the 9mm, we have all heard about it, That doesnt mean its the best for stopping a person that breaks in to your home at night. Police Departments have taken measures to reduce police involved deaths over the years, and the 9mm is good for incapacitating a suspect; ~ and at the same time a quick hospital visit can most of the time save that suspects life. Fewer deaths puts the Police Departments in a better light when it comes to PR. Thats what a lot of it is really about. Keep the police related deaths numbers down. If you want tiny teeth, buy a 9mm. If you want serious wolf fangs that can take down multiple gunmen shooting up a place you might be stuck in, or maybe 5 men armed with ballbats that break into your home at night, Get a 357 Sig or a 10mm. It just takes less rounds to incapacitate each target. You wont have to reload near as much to do the same job. How prepared for what scenario do you want to be? If you get mobbed by an ANTIFA crowd beating and kicking you to death with Skateboards and two by fours, will you have the capacity to incapacitate only one of them? Or can you take enough of them down to stop the attack entirely. Then have an extra round in the chamber for that one stupid guy who still wants to whack you with his skateboard even after you have fired your weapon? You decide what you are prepared for. It kicks harder. Yes. Train with a 9mm. Carry a 357 for protection. Problem solved. When your life is on the line, You will appreciate the extra horsepower behind each round. You wont care if your hand is a little sore afterwards either. Better that than dead.

If you want the 10mm in your hand in that situation, then carry what makes you feel safe because it gives you sound mind that it will work when needed. 10mm and 357Sig take some training to get used to, but once you are adapted, Its aweful nice to have it protecting you and your family. You made some great points, as always. I think it has that "wow" factor to it, which makes it a very attractive choice. It's definitely a good round to bring up in conversation. It's speed is almost unchallenged in auto-loaders(besides the 10mm). If it were as cheap to shoot as other rounds, it would be more of the obvious choice for carry, I think. Except for the 10mm in bear country. I don't really know what to think about it......still confused. lol

I remember as a kid, my grandfather carried a Ruger Blackhawk or Redhawk, can't totally recall the exact model but it was in .357 mag. I was 10 and we were hunting, a grizzly wandered into elk camp. I was in the door of the tent facing my grandpa and all the sudden his face went cold, he drew and shot. Those flames out the end of that barrel, I'll never forget that. Two years later I got to carry a .38 special while hunting. I guess if anyone reads this they'll wanna know, yes bear was killed. Once my grandpa shot my dad and uncles all shot their rifles or pistols. Bout 8 of them. Sounds like overkill but you can't be to careful with a grizzly. I know there's one shot and drop on them but there's also a bunch that have eaten lead like cereal and attacked with a heart shot to hell. When I hunt now I actually just carry a .40 200grain hardcast as a sidearm. Great penetration and you can follow up much quicker than a mag or 10mm. I usually just run into black bear or cougars now anyway but the ability is still there. I highly recommend .40 200 grain hardcast to anyone that has a tough time with grip strength or arthritis. It doesn't make you want to amputate your arm after shooting it. I'm fine with whatever but I convinced my dad and grandpa to make the switch, it's helped them both a lot.

Smith and Wesson M&P40 2.0 4.25" 12. .380 Ruger LCP ....I hope I didn't forget any, but here's what I've found my preferences to be: I have been carrying my .40 S&W appendix , with LCP in pocket. I do rotate my appendix carry sometimes, but lately that's it. HK VP9 was the easiest to pull out of box and shoot well. My CZ is basically upgraded to be similar to a shadow 2 and is my favorite range gun. My revolvers are special range days and the Colt sits by my bedside so I can fondle it and kiss it good night. I love all the calibers , but I've come to prefer .40 as my main carry with the backup .380. Just my two cents. Life is good.

My SIG P229, Springfield 4” XD and SmithW 4006 handle the .40 cartridge great & these particular pistols were built/designed for them. I practice & carry Underwood or Minuteman ammo. 155 to 165 grain HP. If you have never shot .40 S&W, give it a try.

I honestly love the .40 it's more powerful than 9mm and even .45acp, also it has the most success in 1 shot stops than any other caliber according to police shootout records. A lot of ppl hate on it and say its too snappy. I felt that way when I first started shooting it but 1000s of rounds later I have learned to manage recoil well enough that I can shoot it just as well as 9mm and have that extra power. I usually carry a Walther PPQ M2 with Federal HST .40s&w and I feel very confident that it will do the job if I need it.

1 shot stop is fools gold. What LEO is going to shoot 1 shot and then assess, rather than shooting until the suspect is immobilized? BTW - people on a suicide mission don't go down after one shot. Only the people who want the LEO's to call an ambulance (or want to exit the firefight) go down after one shot. The exception will be hits to vitals or "T" zone, and that has everything to do with luck/accuracy and less to do with caliber.

@@TheTexan99 modern 9mm ammo doesn't come close to 40 cal. The comparison you're making is hot loaded 9mm vs a simple target round 40 cal. Hot loaded 40 cal is way more powerful and just as fast as 9mm. Do your research.
@zynnertime12 жыл бұрын
@@TheTexan99 you’re comparing high end 9mm rounds to fmj or target .40 rounds. Find the same “modern 9mm ammo” in .40 s&w and it will be faster and stronger than its 9mm counterpart. Don’t know why you 9mm worshippers seem to think 9mm is a stronger round when in fact it scientifically isn’t.
@largol33t1 Жыл бұрын
@@TheTexan99 Big deal. You wind up having to put 2-3 more rounds into the bad guy to stop him. Either is fine for self defense. And 9mm ONLY has more energy than .40 if it's overloaded +P ammo, which is not a good idea with most handguns. .40 is derived from cutting down the shell of the massive 10mm Auto round, which is equal or even more powerful than .44 Magnum.

I own a Glock model 22 in .40 S&W and have a .357 Sig barrel for it which I enjoy shooting it very much. I have not experienced any failure to feed or eject with my Glock when shooting the 357 Sig barrel. I recently bought a 9mm conversion barrel and 3 Magpul 17 round magazines which I plan to test during my next trip to the gun range. I like having a single pistol I am able to shoot 3 different calibers in as ammo availability in one of the 3 calibers will be found during a SHTF situation. Keep the videos coming Hickok45!

Mr. Hicock, you should try a Sig P226 or P229 in 357 SIG. The extra weight of those pistols makes them much more enjoyable than Glocks. Also, the magazines for those are truly interchangeable, unlike with the Glock. And just FYI, 357 SIG is a necked down 10mm, not a necked down .40 like you said.

I was also warned about problems with the Beretta after 30-40k rounds, frankly that's a lot of rounds before you need to worry. Both my 10 and 12-round Sig Sauer magazines have imprints stamped on them that say: "Sig Sauer .40/.357". I believe that means the mags are Sig Sauer certified to accept both rounds with equal approval by Sig Sauer. My 299 was purchased used, but almost brand new and I believe it was built around 1991 or 92. I bought it at a small gun shop in 2006. The prior owner didn't shoot it much. I doubt it had 500 rounds when I purchased it. To me today, it's a time piece, like an old fine watch. It even says: "SIGARMS INC" on the stainless-steel slider. It's a piece of history. The best part is that I now can change it from a 40 S&W to a .357 Sig in a few minutes while at the range. It's hard to find .357 FMJ target ammo for it. I ordered a few boxes of HPs for it and both rounds work perfectly with the Sig Magazines. I'm keeping this as a timepiece in a similar way that I'm keeping my pre-lunar Omega Speedmaster.

I think his approach in that way is just being realistic. People associate themselves with a particular camp and everyone else is just wrong. He does have his own personal preferences, but I'm sure he understands that each camp has some valid points, but there's no such thing as "best" for everyone in every situation. Sometimes trying to convince someone of that can sometimes be nothing more than a waste of time. I can appreciate the variety that Hickok offers. There's a little something for everybody.

listen to what he is saying. he is making very intelligent points for both calibers. a 357 sig isn`t for everybody, it`s an expensive proposition for most in more ways than 1. for the majority the 40 is all they will ever need. I, personally, don`t care much for the 40. it`s a good defensive round but it is more expensive than a 9 and not much more effective with current premium ammo. If you are willing to forgo the expense and can tolerate the snappy personality of the 357...it does offer some margin of superiority in certain areas. Again...most would never need or realize the difference unless you had used the 9, 40, and 357 extensively. And no, the 45 acp is not a consideration for me. too much recoil, too slow to be reliable in all instances and too little capacity in a handy defensive weapon. Splitting hairs there, I know....but a 45 doesn`t have the range I like

Interesting review. I love the .40 S&W. I have since it first came out I had to have a gun chambered in .40, so I purchased one and I never really felt the need to go to the .357 sig. It is a bit of a designer cartridge, much like a pair of faddy jeans. I am sure it is really good and if I had shot that caliber like most I probably would like it. I have shot so many others like .22lr .38 special .357 mag .40 .44 mag 10 mm 9 mm .480 ruger and several others I have forgotten. Out of all of those I always seem to go back to two calibers that I like the most and that is the .40 and the classic .357 magnum. When I carried a gun I toted my .357 magnum revolver with a 4" barrel and seven shot cylinder. When it comes down to it , it seems to be a matter of personal preference. I say use the caliber you feel the most comfortable with and you will be happy. Thanks for the review.

I've got a glock 19 and a glock 23. Both are great defensive handguns. The 9mm and the 40 cal are great rounds. And both are effective. And the 40 can be converted to 9mm. I'm considering get a 357 sig also. But really haven't made uo my mind. As a defensive weapons. The glock is a pleasure to carry. Especially in the summers in my area. The humidity here is ridiculous. At night you can actually see the humidity under the street lights at night. You can take a shower and put on fresh clothes. They become limp and sweaty from the frint door to you car. And day or night the glock 19 or 23 are easy and convenient to carry in any kind of weather. The glock came out a few years before I retired as a federal law enforcement officer. And it was a interesting concept and it's lightweight interested me. I stayed with the 3rd generation smith as.bd wesson 5906 and the sig 220 and the Browning Hi Power. But aftre getting my first glock19 and the glock23. Due to their reliability and accuracy I was nit only impressed but sold on the concept. I even got a sig320c to compare to my glock19. And both are great handguns. But the glock19 remsimns my edc and I do carry the sug simetimes. It's basically become my bed side gun for home defence. And to go with my primary home defensive wespon a ar9 carbine. With a Bushnell older model dot trophy scope. It's a big scope and it's got a little weight to it. But it's built tank tough. I got it for my issued ar15. And when I retired it retired. And it went on my personal ar15 carbine. After I got the ar9 carbine I switched the Bushnell to the sr9 and a sparc2 to the ar15 with a magnifier. And I'm well satisfied with my setup. They fit my needs well.
