Hickok - "If I actually teach you anything" - I just wanted to say that you have taught me an abundant amount about firearms, and a little bit on politics and plenty on how to just be a good guy. You're a fantastic example of the typical firearms guy. From when I learned the difference between isosceles and weaver stances, to never pulling a hammer on a revolver, to how NOT to hold a semi-auto, to all sorts of holster options, etc. I came, years ago, watching your vids when I first got interested with firearms. Now I'm a proud (and more importantly, safe and responsible) gun owner thanks much in part to you! You and John have done such a great job for the community as a whole. This is just one guys' thanks for all the hard work (Well, the editing in post, etc. I don't think you consider sending rounds down range "work!") -Gof

I have a LCR in 9mm. Great little gun. More powerful than 38 special less than 357. Moon clips load and unload faster nullifying one of the disadvantages of revolvers. LCR 9mm is useful on the hip, ankle or pocket. Good companion to have along.

FYI, you do not need moon clips to load and fire 9mm rounds in the LCR, but you need a rod or a pecil to eject the cases one by one because the ejector does not grab them.

This line of revolver videos is fantastic. I agree on the short range accuracy of revolvers compared to pistols. Recently, took my daughter to the range. She shot a glock 42, a SW 617 and a SW 686 with a 3" barrel. I was shocked but this tiny girl preferred the 686 hands down. Revolvers, even heavy steel models, might just be the handgun that can suit anybody.

Hickok, love your vidios. Just a tip. The new lcr 9mm does not require moonclips to fire. After expansion you may have to pop the shells out with a pencil, but the firearm will safely fire. Stay safe. Mike from Massachusetts.

Excellent presentation. I’ve owned my LCR for a couple of years and have run several thousand rounds through it. CCI Blazer 115 & 124gr have both had crimp-jump events but I still buy and shoot it for practice because it’s rare to jump and it’s cheap. My favorite practice ammo is Federal ‘American Eagle’ 70 grain lead-free ball. Very fast; very snappy. About twice the price of Blazers… My defense load is 3 rounds of Hornady’s Critical Defense Lite (hoping to deter) followed by 2 rounds of Underwood’s 95gr +P Xtreme Defense. I also carry 3 moon clips of the Underwood. Moon clips are fairly pricey and seem to be going higher. 3 for $15 three years ago; 3 for $20+ now. I’ve never tried aftermarket brands. Some ammo is too snug to fit, Fiocchi’s 115gr is a good example. It measures a few thousandths wider at the base and in the groove. Best to test before loading up ;) When cleaning I have learned to check tightness of the two #10 Torx screws (they hold the two main sections of the gun together; the lower one also allows the cylinder carrier to be removed). Also, a #5 Torx screw runs through the cylinder opening lever. All 3 should be checked frequently. I’ll probably use a low-strength thread-lock (like Loctite blue) in the future… That’s about it. I love this little revolver and tend to run about 250 rounds on a normal range day. Almost all practice is at 10 yards or closer. I enjoy shooting larger caliber longer barreled wheel guns also, but this LCR is just too much fun.

Interesting thought about the moon clips. Arguably for the best concealment and convenience, the ultimate way to carry a revolver reload is a speed strip because it keeps the package as slim as possible. Not nearly as quick as a speedloader, but they are more concealable and convenient for carrying. Moon clips add in the fragility, if you carry it in your pocket it's not going to be as comfortable a speed strip, but it'll be smaller than most speedloaders, but the real downside compared to both is if you lean up against something or have it on a belt in a pouch and smack it against your car when you're getting in, you might end up with a reload that won't work when you need it.

I hear what you are saying near the end about revolvers and old guys. I took my GP100 to concealed carry qualification recently since I tend to shoot it pretty well, i.e., in single action. However, the targets were black and I could not get a good sight picture (at age 62). Since I couldn't see the sights I just went for it in double action. I was finishing the various tests faster than the other folks with semi-autos. The instructor kept saying "no need to rush." When all was said and done every shot was on target. After scoring everyone the instructor said "You are pretty good with that revolver." Of course that made me feel good. A GP100 was my first handgun 35 years ago and I just find it to be a great shooter. I was better with it than my several autos until I recently got a Ruger SR1911.

I had the LCRx in .38 Special +P for one week before two defects on the frame came through. Ruger replaced the gun with any gun of my choice from Ruger. When I told my range about this they said that within the same month a new GP100 and a new SP101 both had similar frame issues (surprising as they had different construction) and both were replaced by Ruger. Then a LC9 literally fell into a number of parts at the range due to a slide defect. I absolutely love Rugers (I still own 3) but the new "lean manufacturing" they have started to use is seemingly a cost savings but also a quality issue.

I own an LCRX in 9mm and have had the bullet pulling problem. Once during a re-qual for my permit. Some brands will and some wont. Another problem is steel cased ammo. In mine, the steel cases stick in the chambers and the moon clip keeps them from being poked out one at a time. Just went the other day to practice for a coming re-qual and using Blazer, had no problem with bullet pulling.

I think that 9 mm is a very good option. Especially here in Europe where 9 mm is the commonest cartridge. Enough powerful and effective for self-defence (although it's extremely difficult to get gun permit if not for sporting purposes), used in pistols, so you don't need two different calibers - the same ammo. And last but not least - relatively cheap. I admire your vids hickok :-) Glad you are still on YT. I like your accent - Tennesse?

I like the LCR 9, I have many Ruger Firearms, but spent my money on the Century Arms 9mm Pit Bull when I wanted a 9mm revolver.. Mainly because it doesn't require the Moon Clips. I carry 10 spare rounds in a flat single stack magazine (No Moon Clips) and just slide the rounds out of the semi auto magazine into the revolver. If I put a 15 or 17- 9mm double stack mag in my pocket it's even better. So far the Pit Bull has been a reliable tool.

I can't say this with 100% certainty, but I believe the only JHP's that will expand from this revolver, and other 9mm snubbies like it, will be 115 gr optimized for short barrels. Basically Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel and maybe Federal HST. Even though 9mm is fairly fast, it's not meant to be shot from a such a short barrel and have to deal with the cylinder gap too. If someone wants a snub revolver for carry, choose .38 Special instead. There just a perfect match.

I have one of these like it a lot. Carrying a reload was a problem for a while. Now I carry a spare 5 in a soft nylon speedloader case on my belt. An unusual method in winter is in a pill bottle in my coat pocket. Each of these methods hold 2 moon clips. 9pm is more powerful than 38 plus lots of different loads available compared to 38. The 9mm case is shorter and you get full length ejection. I see lots of advantages.

I've had crimp jump using Federal aluminum ammo. Use brass cased ammo only now. Moon clips are optional. The moon clip doesn't set the head spacing the cylinder is cut like a traditional rimless barrel. The cylinder is what sets the head spacing in this revolver. Handy little gun for sure. It also seems Ruger addressed issues older rimless revolvers had.

You are 100% correct on 9mm being a bit snappy in small pistols. Just compare a Sig 238 and 938. Also springfield 911 in 380acp and 9mm. Shooting 9mm makes the gun want to jump out of your hand, you have to readjust your grip after every shot. The 9mm 911 ended up slide biting me because I had a death grip on it. I know slide bites are just a kiss from your gun but I bleed all over it and it was a rental. I ended up buying the 380 since it was tamer on the recoil. 9mm is for full size guns!

Love and respect this channel and love shooting the LCR 9mm. I’ve found this revolver is a little ‘choosy’ regarding ammo. Between it and the Mrs. G19 we’ve been able to shoot everything we’ve purchased. Fiocchi Range Dynamics 9mm 115gr FMJ doesn’t fit well. It’s diameter at the base and in the ring keep it from dropping in. If forced it’s a s-o-b to extract. I haven’t put the calipers to Federal HST 147gr yet but it would have had to be forced into the cylinder as well. (both issues using factory Ruger moon clips in like new condition) BTW: I found this video an excellent representation of what this revolver has to offer.

Interesting video. I have used the 357 version and 22 LR version. I have used moon clips in my Governor and found them useful at the range. I think carrying moon clips is the hard part when speed strips cannot be used. I did get a moon clip loader from Midway that made things much easier on loading. I suspect this is an ankle carry backup in use the most. It can be a fun range gun for plinking.

I bought this revolver and experienced “jumping the crimp”. My experience with “jumping the crimp” is with aluminum and steel case ammo, and it was consistent. Additionally, I made the mistake of shooting some Wolf brand lacquered bullets through it. The lacquered shell casings actually baked themselves into the cylinder requiring that I seek out a gunsmith to remove them. Of course I only shoot brass out of it now and haven’t had further problems. An interesting tidbit is this revolver will shoot .380 acp utilizing the moonclips. Its not recommended of course.

Tempted by this one. I hear out of this barrel length, 9mm about matched .357 magnum, without the magnum recoil.

Great review Hickok! I have an LCR 38/38+p and it is a handy little firearm. Got for my wife because she cannot rack my S&W 380 BG or my keltec P-33. Have to get her to range and make sure she can handle it okay. It does have a kick.

I actually shoot this gun quite frequently without moon clips, depending on the brand of ammo the spent cases will just fall out. Usually only more expensive brass 9mm like hornady or hydroshocks. The 115 grain FMJ federal ammo will usually get stuck in the chambers and you'll need moon clips or a dowel to get them out, although you shouldn't be carrying 115 grain federal FMJ anyway IMO. I'm glad I didn't get this gun in .357 mag, even though the 9mm is supposed to be a weaker round it really doesn't perform any differently and the ammo is so much cheaper.

the LCR is a nice little revolver CC. I have the .357 Mag version. It does have a heck of a kickback. .357Mag are crimped, and I have never had the bullet "Jump the Crimp" . I would not trade it for any other small revolver. I can't wait until Ruger puts out the LCR in .40S&W, like the Charter Pitbull has.

i wish i would have seen this before i got my lcr 9mm. i couldn't get through 5 rounds of blazer brass. i thought i got a bad gun, but it works fine with winchester white box and american eagle, 0 misfires with with either of those. i got it for concealed carry with moon clips.

SP101 in 9x19 mm had two barrel length in 2.5" & 3.0". The SP 101 does not need moon clips to function. Though the expended cases need to be plucked out of the chambers. The SP works with moon clips too. SP felt recoil is much less because of the weight and less chance of "crimp jump". To bad the 9x19 mm SP's is out of production now and considered "rare". I also prefer the .38 Special in the LCR platform because of because of its dependence on suitable moon clips.

I'd love to see you do a reveiw on the 9 mm Charter Arms Pitbull. It's supposed to be engineered to run w/out moonclips and the jumping the case problem is solved too! They had problems w/their six shooter but now its 5 shells and if its as good as they claim I'd buy one. Thanks!

Jumping the crimp happened to me once with the LCR. I didn't know that's what it was called until today. I thought it was bad ammo. Good to know thanks

One argument for the 9 mm handguns is the price of ammo. 9 mm is considerably less expensive.

I just got one in 9mm. It's great! I have many 9mm cc and a Kel tec p32 for the summer months. As far as tiny 9s go it's fantastic! I even have a Roubaugh R9. it that's how you spell it. lol while it's a awesome piece the Ruger has much less recoil. my2¢

I know this video is old but it’s still relevant, Ruger makes a good product, I have 3 of these LCRs (not the Xs). I’d love to have the 9mm but I’m saving my nickels right now. The only thing I don’t really like about this 9mm idea is carrying the extra reloads which seems to be somewhat impractical for pocket carry. I suppose one could argue that 5 shots in most cases would be sufficient but certainly not in all cases. Lots to consider.

Unloading with moon clips eliminates a common malfunction in revolvers. Getting a case stuck under the extractor star won't happen with moon clips because all the cases are held together instead of separately.

I like your reviews and I like the Ruger LCRs. You do a great job. However, I think you should do a review of the Ruger LCR 9mm shooting it one-handed limp wrist to see if you experience 9mm crimp-jump so viewers will make sure they test different ammo at the range to avoid crimp-jump. In a life or death situation, they may only have 3 shots from the 9mm before crimp-jump jams their gun. I carry reliable Ruger LCRs 38 specials.

well, you know it would be cool if ruger would have made this gun with a quick change-out .38spcl. cylinder where it could have been a dual-caliber revolver. kind of like those inexpensive "Heritage" .22LR / .22MAG revolvers that do have the cylinder change-out. it would be heavier, but if ruger maybe might also have made this gun a 3-caliber handgun.... .357MAG, .38spcl. & 9mm. i know ruger really made this gun as a light weight small carry gun, but still it would be cool if they did make a 3-caliber revolver. thumbed it up & thx4vid!

Ruger makes a larger convertible Blackhawk single-action revolver in 357 Magnum in which you can shoot 38 special also. It is a "Convertable" with an extra 9 MM cylinder which is easily swapped out with the 357 Magnum cylinder. I love the Blackhawk with the 7 1/2 inch barrel for hunting. You do NOT want the 9 mm LCR because I have experienced crimp jump in it. However, the Blackhawk works great with the 9 mm cylinder because of its heavier weight. I love Rugers.

Shooting weak hand limp wrist my Ruger LCR 9mm jumped the crimp after the 3rd shot and jammed the cylinder with factory Federal 115 full metal jacket. I shot my reloaded hot 9mm 115 grain hollow points and they did not jump the crimp. Maybe the Federals were an even hotter load? I have 3 other Ruger LCRs but I carry Ruger 38 LCRs due to the 9mm jumping the crimp. I shoot my LCRs single-handed because in close quarters may need other hand to fend off blows.
