You are so right! My mother wanted to plant trees in the cow field when we moved in. People said why both, you will never see them grown. 15,000 trees and over 55 years later she watched the forest, her forest grown up around her. She recently died at home, in her forest 4 days shy of 94. There was not other place she wanted to be but in her forest.

28 yrs ago I stopped mowing my property. It was taking me three evenings a week to keep it mowed, and I hate lawnmowers. Now, I am totally secluded from the street in front of my home, from all my neighbors. I only planted a few trees, pecan, apple, peach, and a cherry tree. But God brought me all the other trees and shrubs by bird droppings. I don`t know how the walnut trees got here! I have several patches of wild asparagus that I harvest in the spring. But it`s my forest that I enjoy.

Great wisdom, often heard seldom retained. I heard it all my life, in your 20's and 30's and really up into your 40's, you think about retirement and investing, but think that you've got lots of time. Well, I'm about to turn 71, and I'll tell you the gospel thruth, it only takes a blink of the eye and you'll go from 30 to 70. You really won't see it so clearly looking uphill but once you look back time went a lot faster than you think. Listen to old Hickock here, he's telling you the truth.

Took that money and built a new 3,000 sq ft home I still live in. I have never had a house payment that wasn't at least covered by rent. Thanks Dad! I miss you. I'm 68 now.

YEP, compounded interest works, but you don't really start seeing it for about 20 years. I wish I had converted my IRA to a Roth when they first came available about 25 years ago. Now that I HAVE TO take the Required Minimum Deduction, that's a mistake that costs me several thousand dollars a year now in taxes. And it will only get worse every year! But still, it's much, much better than having no IRA at all; even though I also get a small pension, life would be very difficult just on pension and Social Security!!!

Look at all these new homes that have no trees. Is it just me? Or does the feelings you have has a home owner mean more. I’ve had planted many a root in my own yard as a young man back in 93 and never stopped. I just turn 70. And have over 100 or so trees and bushes not to mention flowers and that’s just my second home. Save every tag to. Wasn’t cheap. But the shading and shaping of each has made me feel kind of proud. You will never be disappointed giving back. The beauty of it all.

When you live and work in the Netherlands, pension is obligatory for everyone that works. It's taken off of your salary. (different for businessowners) So when you turn 68 you get the standard older people payment (AOW) from the government (for example $1100,- per month) + your pension from your working life (for example $ 1900,- per month). Same goes for your partner. If you are allone, you get more. I don't know if you have the same sort of system in the USA? I don't know if it's true, but people say the system in the Netherlands is one of the best in the world.

@@lacuzon39000 Ok, so that is different from Europe. Excuse me, probably because of different language, but what do you meen with: "We got 401 k in USA."? The interest isn't that low (0.3%). It differs from the line of work you have, but it is overseen by the government. True, You don't have any influence on it. But to be honest: When and if I would invest myself, I neither would have influence on the interest. It's always a gamble. Best thing I think is to invest it in Gold, but could be wrong.

Japanese have a way to tackle procrastination. If you are going to do something, you only have to do it for 1 minute. If you just do it for 1 minute, success. In reality, if you do something for 1 minute, it's likely that you will spend more time on it. Either 1 minute or 15, 30, 60 minutes doing the thing counts as successful. I did that, twice, through my employers. both times when i just got a decent amount in there to start making money, the economy tanked, and i lost like 90% of it. that was it. i was NOT going to give away any more of my money. then about 2 or 3 years later, I had an accident, that wiped us out financially. at that time, social security was taking between 4 and 6 years to even hold a hearing to see if you were qualified to get disability. we ended up losing my truck, and our house. And we had a 2 year old, and a newborn. my wife worked at Walmart. but there was some reason that social services wouldn't help us with our house. I don't remember, it's been to long. about 8 years ago, my wife was diagnosed with dementia. her disability went through in something like 4 months. but bow, we are both on social security. and barely enough to pay our bills. and our house needs a roof, there is no money for that. and even our church wont help us with that. I have always been an easy going, we'll find a way kind of guy. but I have about had it.

a lot of people just do not have confidence in the future any more. Investment earnings are based on past history, the future looks more bleak to people every passing year, we see many cultural and economic developments that do not inspire confidence in investing of any sort. I felt that way 55 years ago when I entered the work force and countless times down the decades I would find myself expressing no confidence and want out of company investment programs. Still, in the back of my mind was the realization that IF the future retirement did arrive, what would you do for money? Failing to plan is a plan to fail for sure.
