wow what a beautiful piece. Would love to own one and better have the woodworking skills to make one like this. This makes me want to get into woodworking as a hobby, I know it is not easy to do and requires years of training, but very motivational.

Can someone please explain the purpose of steaming and pressing this timber? They're not clamping or laminating they obviously know what they're doing, but as a woodworker I don't get it.

From their website: Japanese cedar is a coniferous domestic timber product. Even when seeking ways to use its gentle texture and softness, it was too brittle, making it unsuitable for furniture-making. KISARAGI is a design that uses compressed quarter-sawn Japanese cedar. Uniformly compressing the cedar gives it a uniform strength, making it possible for the first time to use it with a straight grain.

Thanks very much for your effort. One more technique to the list I was unaware of. It all makes sense now.
