Former logger here, we (my son and I) have a mill and I grew up logging and saw milling all my life. Once we got our portable mill and started sawing logs from our property it seems every log and every cut is a jaw dropper. I can never pick a favorite, but I have always been in love with hickory. Each log and board has its own character and beauty. We are just south of G'boro NC. Happy sawing!!

Some sawmills incorporate a tiny turner. A well-laid business plan should recover mill expenses over time but the joy of finding that unique piece of wood grain inside a log is like opening a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get. Next is a forge to make Stoney Ridge Knives etc with all that handle wood.

@EthanPDobbins
@EthanPDobbins Жыл бұрын
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer What are your reasons to say doesn't it make good lumber? I don't like it for lumber myself only because it's so darn hard to get a nail into. You gotta put it up green or else you're pre drilling every hole. My dad built our porch out of hickory with oak posts and when I built new steps onto it last summer I wouldn't be far from lying if i told you I've driven nails into concrete that was softer. Hammering goes great on the treated pine then you hit that hickory and it bends it over. But the hickory lasts forever as long as it's kept fairly dry. Couldn't ask for a stronger board. But i prefer oak because it's more rot resistant and being more experienced at driving nails now I can actually get a nail in it. Hickory is great for a tool handle though. Buck the logs into usable lengths and get after it with a splitting wedge for the best tool handles. Though when i get a sawmill i plan to just saw out some handle blanks. Ive got more tools to handle than I've got time to split and carve. Goes faster when you start with a clean square blank than with a split out hunk.

I have had a sawmill (Woodland 130Max with extension) for about six months and if you have access to trees, get a sawmill! Even when the wholesale price of lumber is down to below $400 (1,000 board feet) in the US, that still means that dry/treated lumber wholesale prices are about $1 a foot - and you should see the amount of framing timber and planks you get out of one decent tree! Here in the UK, prices are £3 a meter for 6" planks retail, £2 wholesale, so a sawmill really pays for itself pretty quickly. It also means that you can make those odd sizes like a 16' roof beam that otherwise would cost an arm and a leg!
