What does being black have to do with it? You're just a hard-working farmer like some of us here, trying to navigate in an increasingly bureaucratic, governmental controlling system. If they decide to sick a few tax payer funded lawyers on us, we're all done. No one would have the funds to fight against that, black or white.

I try not to but sometimes you have to swallow your pride and use it just don’t abuse it.

Also should look into the grace report done by the Reagan admin which showed your "tax" dollars dont go towards anything that you see in the public it's not even enough to cover the interest of the US debt. So that means NONE of the "money" (which there is none of also) goes to anything "the public" receives. All this comes because of the ignorance of how the money system actually works. Josh I have a son who is a certified genius, degree in physics Naval Academy, MBA from MIT. When he was young he thought he was all that. He would ask me for input about things. I would always tell him your smart but they have a lot more experience. He learned that there is no substitute for that experience. When it is your money and time those nuggets of information you obtained become your intelligence. You can be proud of your farm and the fact you continue to learn. GREAT JOB!

Same mad problems here in Scotland - I could get subsidies for those, that and the other but with strings attached! For example, the government will pay for half the cost of building my fences, but then I must use an approved and accredited fence builder! I'll be putting in a waterline to feed our first polytunnel before winter sets in - the wife tried a mini polytunnel and the results were excellent, so a proper big one will be coming!

I don't think taxpayers deserve to have to pay for a farmer's startup...if the Gov't is gonna pay for the farmer...they need to pay for the retailer, restaurant, auto shop, bar, and every other business. We're doing all this falsely in the name of "environmental" but in reality it's propping up a business that has a high probability of failure. How many abandoned NRCS projects are really out there? Free money simply isn't free!

Here, if we wanted to harvest subsidies, we would have to put up with all kinds of petty officials and accredited conservation specialists who of course would want us to jump through all kinds of hoops. I learned a long time ago to stay away from governments and their officials - they are in the business of wasting my time and the taxpayer's money. And all to very little effect!

Awesome. Definitely the way. Wells. We had one where we used to live. The whole town had them for each home and business. No shortages. Artesian. No water bills. If health safety concerns were a real thing, there would be no fluoride in municipal drinking water.

Okay I've got to tell you a story on that last comment. My cousin was an organic farmer who took in tree cuttings and leaves from all the local services and use his big loader and turned it all and composted it and got chicken poop and whatnot and that's how he fertilized his fields. One day he was eating lunch and looked out the window across the street and somebody had come in and looked at his compost heap which was quite large and they got out of this van and white suits and face masks and proceeded to go around and want to I guess get samples or something. So when he got over there and grab their butts they were a bunch of young punks who had no sense of decency to go on somebody's property unannounced without permission. Then he finds out that they were from the state of Michigan and somebody was concerned that he was polluting the groundwater and this was to be classified possibly as a toxic waste site! How many of you out there are right now identifying with that and your behind is pucker and thinking oh my God. Well it carried on for the better part of a year when he finally was finished with them he basically got away without any problems but had to fight for it. Yes the government is really really good at screwing up the groundwater and whatnot for the things and activities they do and nobody is held responsible but we are not the government and we will always be held responsible and I will probably get dinged on this one for the KZbin police already had one little thing pop up. What other thing I'd like to invite people to because it's another channel I love besides stoney ridge and that is countryside acres I think it is how about a farmer with eight kids from Canada who packed up and moved to Russia not for lack of not being successful with farming or not being able to look at the United States and see if there was a better place there. I think everybody could do good to see something from somewhere else and be appreciative of what we have and fight for it but also tried to see the truth of how it is elsewhere and that some countries may be have good things going for them that we are missing out or going in the wrong direction here

Josh. You are correct. The government handouts come at a hefty price at some point. Just pay attention to what is going on right now. As for the money you spent on your farm. Yea, you could have probably saved some money, but the old adage applies here. Could've, should've, would've. Life is a lesson. You have a fine place. There is no doubt about that. There is still plenty of work to do, and you have the rest of your life to make mistakes. We're all human, and none of us are perfect. Keep doing what you're doing. The mistakes and failures make us who we are. Personally, the only thing that I think you need is a really nice mechanical tractor and a saltwater pool rite behind the mega shop. 😅

Creeks , streams , any waterway that comes onto your property from someone else's , and leaves your property onto someone else's property is already governed/restricted by the county under their riparian laws and ordinances. Fecal content can be a problem too with spring fed streams and creeks.

yep....if you allow too many animals to lounge in the creeks...example might be a farm with 200 head of cattle lounging in a creek bed all day....however, if done responsibly this will not be an ecological disaster. Think about the great herds of bison that roamed our country for millions of years...did they ruin the streams? We've just gotta do this responsibly and keep them from destroying ecosystems. Moderation is key my friend

Hello Josh hope youre doing well. I recommended the battery bank which is a second backup of storing energy same as filling the water tank on off no sunny days. Tying the three wells leaves concerns of backwash and cross contamination. Even a small standby generator with tank low level float switch would be preferable. But these battery bank offers 4x250ah or 1000ah at 12vdc in use with a solar 100 amp mppt some 2/0 welding wire tie for batteries solar fuse main or just possibly the solar array well controller you have may do for any overflow charging the batteries when the pump is not on demand. 1. Add backup generator to the solar well pump, or run an electrical line to it. 2. Ram pump feed by creek\spring could be another backup, or run a solar pump that draws water from the creek. Make sure you install check valve so water from the tank cannot backflow into your wells (I am sure your probably thought of this). FWIW: I did about 700 feet of trenching for water lines & installed 5 hydrants this summer, by myself like you did. In some locations I ran power & data cable terminated on 4x6 posts. One is for a rainbird irrigation controller for automatic watering. I used the NDC & Rainbird Jumbo valve boxes for valves & for later expansion to add more hydrants.

I think that the tax thing can be looked at two ways. One way is the way you talk about, that maybe it’s not right for the government to give grants to farmers and pass that cost to the American taxpayer. However, the other way to look at it is that that tax that people are paying is providing a service. That service is ensuring that water is kept clean and soil is kept in place. I say this as someone who worked for a county soil conservation district where we worked closely with NRCS projects like this.

The farmer should be a steward of the land, do the right thing. Keep the soil clean...the problem is the small farmer like myself is forced to the same rules as the feed lot operation. You and I both know that some farmers polute...and other's do the right thing. All I can account for is myself in this instance....but I agree....the NRCS has the best practices in mind, however how many tax $$$ do spend on equipment and wells that get abandoned after a couple years? I've seen it!! Right here in my county! It's wrong....totally wrong!

I've seen more govt waste in my 4 years than I ever cared to see......Let me give you and example: Every year a gov't entity recieves a budget, that budget is based upon money spent in year(s) past. If that entity doesn't spend all of that money...it won't get that much next year. So instead of incentivizing savings and frugality....the goal is to blow through the money at the end of the fiscal year so they get more next time! On and on burying our country further into this horrible wasting of our hard earned living

Absolutely 100% correct I was around nellis Air Force Base when they decided on the flight lines they were going to get rid of all of the 5,000 and up list of tool boxes, l i s t a or Stanley. Think super high dollar. They went to drmo and the only people that could get them were other government entities and then next come along was foreign countries and down at the bottom was a little asses like you and me if there was anything left over we could bid on it and get it. There was nothing wrong with those boxes they wanted to keep their budgets up so they wouldn't lose out. On the submarine I saw the prices of what they paid it was criminal. And the people that were supplying were making a killing and guess what. It was hard to get on any kind of a list to sell anything to the government but once you were there you hadn't made and how do you get onto the list?? Yes it comes out in dribbles here and there and nobody pays attention yes they get paid off yeah those people in the government oh maybe congressmen and senators and others so it's a community of graft and corruption. I'm all for what you're saying Josh and I know these things are controversial but I've seen the filth attached to it at the cost of the taxpayer.

A few ways I kept my fencing cost down. I purchased cedar fence post directly from the loggers on Facebook Market Place for $8-10 per. I live in S. Central Kentucky where numerous gate companies are located. Tarter Farm & Ranch Equipment in Dunnville KY has a Factory 2nds yard filled with Stock Tanks, Feeders, Cattle Panels & Gates for 1/2 retail. People travel in from out of state with trailers to load up. I've fenced incrementally, this year I replaced temporary electric rotational fence with field fence.

Toss a 3 ft piece of copper pipe in the tire waterer. Might help with algae even with the fish. I use them in all my waterers. Copper is naturally antibiotic.

Ummm... As a proud 35-year employee of NRCS, your impressions of us are REALLY off base and not reality. We are primarily an agency that provides technical assistance to farmers and ranchers to help you conserve all your natural resources. If you would have gone to NRCS and SWCD, they would have been able to help you design and implement a holistic suite of practices that meet YOUR desires and needs. We know that you do not have all the knowledge of forestry, agronomy, dam building, water management, pasture management, intensive grazing, etc., and are here to help you. You shoot yourself in the foot and make expensive mistakes by not drawing upon the technical expertise that NRCS and SWCD have to offer you. If you just get to know your local county conservation folks, you will find that we are about as far from that "big brother" mentality as any federal agency can be.

Amen to that up here further north the winner is cruel to a person trying to supply water for cattle even if it's only a few. When it gets really really cold you play hell trying to keep that water from freezing over. Yes I know we all should immediately have the ability to have a heated Barn keep the cattle inside with water and..... That's not the way it works get to where you can afford that you've made all the mistakes and had the struggle of being poor and inadequate. I will say this if you go ahead and make a retention pond I guess you might call it on the side you could keep the cows in there for a while to provide cooling and water but don't have it outlet to the creek unless you have a filter area. Then you can plant your water retention / flooded area with all the cow poop in it..... Is it an easy to armchair figure out how easy it would be to do all these things except when you actually try them yourselves and your dead freaking tired and you look back and judge yourself as not having got enough done today and are you being smart what you're doing should you just go off to your factory job. LOL

Yes, you are justified in using NRCS funds. You are just getting some of your taxes back. NRCS is the only government agency that is half-assed beneficial to the taxpayer. Put guppies in your tanks for summer and you can sell them to pet stores to pay for another hobby or another project on the farm. If nothing else, use a ram pump pumping from the creek or pond if you want to keep the cows 100% out of the creek. I have 5 ponds and my 5 cows currently have access to them. Eventually they will be fenced out of the ponds.

a water system of this magnitude costs about 50k....we've done ram pumps....the are horribly unreliable. You can drive through my county and see all these abandoned water systems that were paid for by the govt. A man reaches into his own pocket and does this...he's not gonna abandon it...I don't think any business should be propped up by the gov't...just my take on it I guess

I understand your view on this because I feel the same way. But if you have seen what I have you would likely look at it differently. When these huge corporate farms create different entities to keep under the $999,999 income levels and then come in and a single person is applying for grants for 10 different entities all for grass raised and finished beef and are your direct competition and getting $1,000,000 in grants and “free money” it dilutes your profitability. I operate can’t free on row crop farming. I wish subsidies would go away but there are too many corporate farms that lobby for it. The money is going to your county and it’s going to get spent whether it’s you or the big corporate farm. If you can use it and make a better product and be something that helps out your local community then I feel it’s better then going to the huge 80-90k acre farms.

Oh and to top that off another one owned a hay company, a trucking company, and had a bunch of cattle. We had a major drought in our area. He filed for reimbursement for hay. He got paid for the hay and hauling the hay to his cattle. Doesn’t make a much sense to me

How does your solar well pump weather all of the work it has to do? I have a solar well pump on one solar panel to provide water to my house and the first one I bought lasted like 2 years and then I had to get it rebuilt. I'm always nervous that one of these days it will need another overhaul but it's expensive.

Hey Josh really good post. It's a hard decision to take government money or not and I am in agreement with you mostly. It seems though that they want to keep the little guys going so they can kind of keep the big guys in check but the big guys aren't going to sit around being stupid either as shown by all these wonderful comments about people who are doing just that. I really loved the the comment that provided Reagan's thoughts weren't they great! I had a lot of equipment too not like you but I was always upset when I got to something that I didn't use and the battery was dead and then I started pulling things out and it was a pain in the butt to have a bunch of batteries always trying to keep them charged then I started carrying batteries to equipment when I needed to use it and that seemed to help not wasting money on batteries that kept going bad. Reason I'm saying that is maybe you might be able to find cheap solar panels. We have reused ones here at 85 to 90% reported that are all selling less than $100 mostly around the 65 to $70 range and they are takeouts from the solar farms. I don't know if you have that available there but if you could get those panels it may make it worth your time to add some of those on and be able to keep your batteries charged or have extras so that you could provide the power for those un sunny days. Just a thought we all have things in wherever we live that are great resources left over from industry or whatever. Thought that might be a practical thought for you. Have a great day

i do not....especially since the tire is healthy enough habitat to sustain aquatic life. The fish in the tanks are like the canary in the mine....no different than a rubber stock tank

I'm curious, do you finish and direct market your calves, or send them to an auction market? If it's the latter, they will likely go to either a background feedlot or a finish feedlot, both of which you have said negative things about. You have a really neat layout for your operation, but think about who you are selling to. Nice video.

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer A few people in my area do retail meat sales with pre-order and subscription. We have a local USDA inspected butcher, and in some cases the customer picks up the meat there, and the farmer doesn't have to handle it at all. I know butchers are not convenient to every producer, and you may have already looked into it, but it's an idea. I used to grain finish a few each year, but I stopped because it was getting harder to find customers who could pay for a years supply of beef.

Josh, with your investment in the solar well system, would it make any sense to consider a small shed next to the solar setup to house some batteries that can be used as power during times of low sun? I believe you said it was a DC pump so an inverter shouldn't be required. Just curious if that might be less expensive than the cost of tying all the wells together. Just a thought in case it isn't something you've considered for comparison. All the best.

the well pumps to a 1000 gallon water tank....storing water instead of storing power. Water requires no maintenance what so ever, while batteries do. That's what we've got going my friend. Great idea, but after alot of study I've found that it's better to store water for backup. 1000 gallons is 2-4 days worth of water, plus over 400 gallons of stored water in the pipes underground...really a cool setup

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I can see where that makes sense for your situation, especially since you already have the wells and just need to dig and install the connecting pipe. I assume the well pump only kicks in when the 1000 tank is at a lower point so it gets filled back up. I imagine your times of low sun may not justify the maintaining of batteries given you have the additional wells.

first: the only reason I'd need to locate it is if I had a leak or problem, or if there were another utility needed. Second...I have video record of the entire system install. Just like the water and sewer line that serves your home..you can locate this utility with a utility locator

Watch Clarkson's Farm. It is a story of the State on the one hand giving money to farmers to do stuff that has dubious to no value to the farm. On the other hand the government tells farmers they cannot do what needs to be done to improve their farm. It is a nightmare. The British government is turning land owners into land managers working on behalf of the State. Most farmers would be better off it the State leaves them alone.

I think you mean Ram Pump.....they were a great interesting solution to temporary water needs....but they are horrible to maintain in the longterm. A curiosity for sure....but not sustainable for the long term

Ram pumps are cool....but 1000% beyond the shadow of any doubt, not a viable source for livestock watering. They are unreliable, constant issues with them and constant maintenance. Ask me how I know. You've gotta have water within 400 feet of the cows..if the ram pump stops you'll never get the water tank filled without them flipping it over. Horrible watering solution for livestock

you're totally entitled to your opinion of the tire water tank, maybe we should send off some water samples to test it....if having actual living things inside them isn't enough proof for ya...send me some peer reviewed information to support your opinions and I'm happy to read it, learn it and rip out any unsafe tire tanks on the farm. I'll let ya do some homework for us...and I'll guarantee you I'll rip out the tanks if you can prove to me with peer reviewed information that they are harmful, carcinogenic or cause health disparities. For now....the goldfish will keep on swimming. used those for about 6 months...then needed to install a more permanent system. Ram pumps are cool....but not reliable for keeping cattle taken care of. Too much upkeep, down time and with this many cattle we can't afford to have down time

I enjoy watching your videos on the various gadgets and products related to raising cattle on your property. However I find it next to impossible to believe you have created a profitable operation with no other income than that gained from your herd assuming you sell all caves as finished cattle at 1500 lbs. Just doing the basic math your gross income from 40 head of brood is around $100,000. That’s gross! You’ve spent tens of thousands on fences, you have three tractors and numerous expensive pieces of equipment,$60,000 to $70,000 just in wells and watering systems not to mention land costs, property taxes, land clearing expenses and to top it off a huge building with an expensive dining add on. It would be beneficial to those watching and hoping to create a similar farming life style if you shared your overall financial investment versus your yearly return on investment.

all good...I clarify this about 10 times a week with folks. Most of them are very angry, jealous and accusatory with their comments..you were just asking. Now..as for anyone thinking they could build a first generation farm without spending buckets of money...well it won't take them long to figure it out lol. Just like any business....you've gotta crawl before ya walk, and you've gotta build it to earn a profit. This year we'll profit on the farm....next year...we might not...small farms don't earn alot of $$ but the lifestyle is priceless

When the Tobacco Companies settled with the States our Governor decided to use the money to buy out tobacco farms. Without the income from tobacco there wasn’t enough income to feed three families so we sold out and found other work.

I'm happy to pay my fair share and work hard to keep up community, roads, bridges and services as well as protection from the police, fire department and military. I don't use the word "rich" because I put no man above me....the wealthy educate themselves on tax law or hire the appropriate people to handle their finances....we all play by the same set of rules....punch a clock, you're rewarded less and more taxes paid....start a business and become "rich" and be put down as you provide jobs....we all can be entrepreneurs and wealth is not out of reach. We just feel like we're stuck and getting the shaft from the wealthy...when in actuality they're the risk takers and we're the risk. Take a few mins and google search whether corporations pay income taxes....your mind will be blown! All this rhetoric we hear in the news is just propaganda....individuals pay taxes.....people own companies but companies don't pay income taxes...the employees and shareholders do...at least that's my understanding. The government is responsible for our weak ag markets due to trading deals and regulation. Therefore they should provide some help for improvements that are out of reach financially otherwise. If they can give able bodied people and illegals our tax dollars then why shouldn’t we get some for working!!
