I couldn't agree more. Hyperventilation while your body and mind isn't trained to consume less oxygen is the dangerous part. Learning to do relaxation and learn to consume less oxygen and learning to lower heartrate is a must before even trying to do hyperventilation.

Unfortunately, some beginners are looking for "quick" ways to get a bigger number on a stopwatch...
@ookiemand
@ookiemand 3 жыл бұрын
@@KAIZENFREEDIVING Yes, those numbers are like the red flag for a bull. I've come up with training ideas to get rid of those numbers, because these distract from learning. Maybe you can make a video about training without numbers, and have commentors share their ideas to expand on the idea of freediving without numbers?

@@ookiemand "numbers" are not useless of course, it is a measurement of the effectiveness of your training, but agree with you they can be a distraction from learning. Very often instead of focusing on "how to make my technique better" beginner freedivers focus on "how I can dive deeper or longer"....

🌈 Hi, I have been moderate free diving for about 15 years. I’m talking about 3 minutes breath hold & active underwater, say 5M. I’ve always used hyperventilating before my dive and never had a problem. Maybe I’m lucky, Seeing your video made me ask what is the ‘correct’ way to increase my time safely?? Thank you! 👌🏼

Hyperventilation is the quickest way to get a BO. So, yes, you are lucky :) The only way to increase your breath hold time is a proper training (technique, mental part, CO2 tolerance etc)

I like to take three breaths to about 80% and then blow all the air out. I do it at 30s 20 and 10 before my breath hold. I find that it makes it a bit easier for me and a bit more relaxed. Would you say that this is hyperventilation is bad? Ive only recently hit a static pb of 4:10.

Yes, you do hyperventilation. And HV reduces the level of CO2, allowing you to come closer to the hypoxic limit (LMC/BO)

Hi Sergey.. Thank you for information. I started training around year ago and I could improve breath hold from one minute to 3 minutes without hyperventilation. I tried hyperventilation with a coach just to understand the impact and it went to 4 min then my lips turned blue and he stopped me immeditely. The question is, what is tbe normal rate of breath hold improvement if we practice continously? Because i see after 3 minutes the progess started to be very difficult.

You are right, after a certain point progression would become much slower. The training should become less random and at least basic periodizatiin approached used. This is why at some point it's important to find a coach who understand how to structure your training. Currently a few coaches start doing it online. I also do online coaching, let me know if you want to try it!

I dont get it. So you dont take a deep breath before free dive? What is exactly hyperventilation? Is it something you do or something that happens to you when you do certain things? I take a deep breath before a dive but in a relaxed manner, do I hyperventilate?

Hyperventilation (over breathing) is when a freediver exhales more CO2 than he produces at the moment. Do a big breath in before a dive is absolutely normal :)

Hyperventilating was the first methodology my instructor taught me. Used it in every single class and in every field trip. We never heard about risks and nothing bad ever happened to anyone. Of course the science of the risks check out but id say the probability of something bad happening must be low because we were all noobs in that class and in the years that followed no one had a black out.

Hyperventilation greatly increases the risk of BO and LMC, but not to 100% :) Some people drink and drive for years without accidents, but it doesn't mean that this is how driving should be done.

The more you exercise your breath the more oxygen you need for your lungs I think that's what your saying. maybe that's why it's good when your upset. Maybe I will try breathing gently but fast. Or maybe just long and slow breath in and short breath in. I don't know I only hold my breath in my hot tub.
