The Temptations of St. Anthony is an oil painting on wood panels by the Early Netherlandish painter Hieronymus Bosch, dating from around 1501. The work tells the story of the mental and spiritual torments endured by Saint Anthony the Great, one of the most prominent of the Desert Fathers of Egypt in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries. This is beyond high quality content, it's TV-grade material. Your narration is as good as the works of art presented, and all the setup and sound background are up to the nines.

it so sad to think how some simplistic and in my opinion useless videos can generate so many views when a master piece like this goes under the radar. I don't want to sound pretentious and people are free to do what they like but my God are they missing out or what? Great work.

To this day I find Bosch's paintings very: intriguing, disturbing and lurid and dark all at the same time. Indeed nothing is new under the sun in regards to man's filth in his soul. Thank you for this channel and the narration of this piece. I greatly appreciate it

This is absolutely amazing! I have heard that Bosch was a man never quitted his neighborhood: it is surprising to hear that. How could he get that much information, how he could gathered all the symbols together? What an imagination and a passion of expression.. I am so shocked by his art. Also, thank you for this amazing explanation of his art...! So impressed.. I am currently writing on a website on history of art, and this month's topic is Bosch, and I am going to make a reference to your video; I will be adding the link below my writing because I want everyone to watch this.

This is so thoroughly interesting. Before I'd watch, having not known about this piece of work, I made sure to study the panels before hearing your analysis. Having not known Anthony's story prior either, I had assuredly thought the man in the third panel, who is Anthony turned away from his reading, was a man wearing the guilty expression of having been seen reading something debauched or forbidden. That first-order shame, like the one when you were first caught steeling quarters from out your father's jar, or how might Eve felt in that begin of confrontation--or how it's read. But then I'd hear you describe it seems to depict his ecstasy for having triumphed over his temptation, which seems true now given all the historicity and context. But it was that aspect within the totality of all three panels that captured me most. It's fascinating to me, with the context there and not there, how that look--the face, the body, the orientation--can read to me on one hand an unfathomably disrobed look of instant shame, as well as too, a weary and heroic show of fortitude amidst what marauding and abundant vileness and mischief carrying on about him--that can not take him no matter their efforts. Ecstasy though... is that what it is? I have to think on that. I wouldn't argue that is isn't a look of victory. Victory does not always produce good taste, or procure a smile. Some victories lead you only to cry, as if not wanting it at all. Fascinating essay. I learned a lot. Thank you for sharing this.

I've been reading all the Hieronomous Bosch novels by Michael Connelly and they are wonderful but pretty soon somehow the painting intrudes. I used to have a copy above my desk for several years. Then it began opressing me and I took it down ... Now it is oppressing me thru Connelly's novels -- humanity doesn't seem to improve over time.

6:00 - there is only one night, not three as stated, when the moon does not shine, that is known as a new moon, one night only, you have stated it is three drawing a parallel with Jesus of Nazareth which is a fallacious comparison and is not accurate. Enjoying the videos.
@ByronThomas
@ByronThomas 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Liam Creavin. I'll quote Mircea Eliade: "The moon, like man, has a career involving tragedy, for its failing, like man's, ends in death. For three nights the starry sky is without a moon. But this " death " is followed by a rebirth : the " new moon ". The moon's going out, in " death ", is never final." "The lunar rhythm regularly presents a "creation" (the moon), followed by a growth (to full moon), a diminution and a "death" (the three moonless nights). It was very probably the image of the eternal birth and death of the moon which helped to crystallize the earliest human intuitions about the alternations of Life and Death, and suggested, later on, the myth of the periodic creation and destruction of the world. " " It is through the moon's phases-that is, its birth, death, and resurrection-that men came to know at once their own mode of being in the cosmos and the chances for their survival or rebirth."
