Ron fantastic review! Your definitions are extremely helpful such as “time domain”. Your experience, explanations, and vocabulary truly gives me the insights to the sound of the speakers. Your term such as “little nuggets “coupled with “ time domain” help me understand the characteristics of this speaker. Additionally, the words “presence” and “fun” are great descriptions that I heard when you did the sound commentary. Your sound commentary coupled with your overall review coupled with measurements exceeds all in a reviews. Your love for music and high end audio is very clear! Thank you for your dedication!

great review! your description of the bass with these JBL....seems similar to what i heard on the Elacs Adante AS61. bass notes are clear, but the initial transients of the bass (for example in an upright bass) are slow and muffled. you want and crave for those transients when you are listening for example to a full orchestra and those upright basses, bassoons, tubas need to cut through. that's a deal breaker for me.... thanks Ron!

I have the HDI-3800s for about two years now. Powered by Marantz MM7055 amp. Not a hint of sibilance. None. Nada. Tweeters are virtually non-existent .. which is exactly what you want. Not forward, no beaming, .. perfect. As a bonus I’ve been delightfully surprised by the extended bass response from the triple 8” bass drivers. I often listen to them for days on end .. I’m retired so ….

I have been using JBL-HDI 3600 running with Yamaha R-N100A for 6 months, they are very good for listening musics and watching movies. Then I bought JBL-HDI 3800 it’s bigger in size. Between this two speakers only slightly different not much. Size wise I do like the JBL-HDI 3600 because the small and beautiful . JBL-HDI 3800 massive . I’m living in London, the house are small in sizes so I do prefer the 3600.

I have the JBL HDI-3800 and I’m not hearing any sibilance or “horn” sound at all. I’d look into your other equipment if I were you. Re: bass. I couldn’t disagree with you more. The HDI aluminum matrix cones are stiffer and lighter than equivalent paper cones. They are less likely to breakup or have internal resonances. I’ve had JBL speakers in my home since 1969. The HDI series have the crispest bass response I’ve heard to date. Certainly the 4310/century series had engineered “punch” in their bass but not very realistic and not very low for a 12” woofer. The later flagship Ti Series had excellent bass response but they had that foam surround requiring the bass driver (LE14H-1) to be removed and sent out for re-foaming about every ten years. The drivers in the HDI Series use lighter, stiffer cone material and nitrile rubber surrounds. They’ll never need servicing unless you somehow abuse them. There’s no paper to absorb moisture and/or dry out depending on the environment. There’s no internal cone resonances requiring application of dampening compounds. Just a better all-around design. Re bass response. When these speakers are properly placed you can expect significant “room gain” for extended bass response. I have dual custom subwoofers (15” Revel drivers in cloned JBL B380 enclosures). I often just turn them off and listen to the 3800s alone. Plenty of natural extended bass! Of course they have the 8” drivers rather than the 6.5” drivers so I have no opinion on the bass response of the 3600s.

Good job Ron on your impressions of this speaker. But those rectangular things at the top are better called horns than waveguides, because as Dr Earl Geddes said back in 1991, horns are any conduit with a varying cross-section. All horns are waveguides, but not all waveguides are horns. Any conduit with a varying cross section improves the loading on the driver, thus lets it operate to a lower frequency. Also I think you should mention that these speakers cost $1,900 each, because then it lets the viewer immediately know what their fair competition is.

After watching your reviews for some time now, I have a question/comment. Often you comment about sound stage and depth when reviewing speakers. With the modern practice of placing one or more microphones on each vocalist and instrument, isn't sound stage and depth a construct of the sound engineer rather than a record of the performance within the space as would have been recorded by only using a pair of stereo microphones? I think the old way of using a single pair of stereo microphones yields a superior holographic sound stage and a real sense of depth. This can be experienced in a number of the Chesky recordings.
@markrigg6623
@markrigg6623 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I certainly agree with what your saying. The soundstages are manufactured during the recording with the techniques you mentioned. What you get doesn't really emulate a live performance and I guess its the reason I don't overly focus on soundstage when I'm listening. When recordings are done just stereo mic'd from the front it sounds more natural and authentic to me as it's closer to how we hear a performance.

The tweeter in the HDI series is nothing like a horn. It’s more like a wave guide on a traditional dome tweeter. It’s purpose is dispersion versus projection characteristic of a horn-loaded midrange/tweeter. If you’re expecting the sound of a horn-loaded high frequency driver you’ll be either delightfully surprised or disappointed based on your preconception of horns.

With regards to JBL and Klipsch, I'm so tired of the same old tropes of "shouty" horns and the cupping of the hands to denote it or harsh highs. Great review Ron, I'm just venting when the only focus is on what older horn speakers were all about. Today's horn loaded speakers, and there are many, like AvantGarde, etc that can sound frighteningly real in a room, are decades ahead. I would like to get into the big boy JBL, but most of them are out of reach from my budget and i just don't think these JBL HDI series compare to what i already have as i've learned bigger is better when it comes to horned speakers. I'm a horn speaker kind of guy. I try to get into traditional dome tweeter speakers with small mid bass and lf drivers, but they just don't do it for me all around unless were talking about models in the 10k to 20k and beyond price range. The M3 Sapphire look interesting, but i'm not going to put speakers in the middle of the room. With most other high end speakers, I can't sit there and listen to "audiophile" recordings over and over. How much can one person listen to Diana Krall or "Long After You're Gone" by Chris Baker and all these same songs being passed around as "audiophile" recordings. I need a balanced speaker that can do everything very good, but maybe a master of none. Huge horns-large format compression drivers crossed over in the 500hz to 650hz range does it for me. 15" paper pro drivers. Fully folded horn if you got the room. I currently use an MTM design with the same horn as the Cornwall IV between 2 neodymium 12" drivers, crossed at 1500hz i believe, but its tremendous. 108lbs each. Front ported. 2" compression driver with aluminum diaphragm. 102db sensitivity. If i ever get the room-my goal is to have active 2 way Jubilees. If you can put a little extra love into the good Klipsch and JBL-in terms of adding bracing, and replacing cheap foam with poly wadding, and swapping the cheap resistors and capacitors and speaker wire with better quality and feed them good-clean power-they are hard to beat for all around. Can't be afraid of tone controls either for different recordings.

There's nothing in the frequency response to suggest sibilance, so it's most likely from the mic technique itself.

@@Newrecordday2013 That’s exactly how a microphone works with a human forcing air through their teeth directly at it. Some mics will also emphasize the sibilance region, cheap preamps can distort, and post-processing effects also contribute to the problem.

Been reading up on the HDI 3600 and 3800. JBL intentionally tried to strike a balance between making the HDI’s “fun” vs “accurate” or “audiophile”. More of an all-rounder for various types of music.
@jessestone785
@jessestone785 Жыл бұрын
I disagree. JBL doesn’t engineer for a “fun” sound since the 4310 / Century series in the late ‘60s / early ‘70s. Wherever did you get the idea that JBL engineered these in the manner you suggested? Pure malarkey.

Help? Lol so I'm looking for a home system. Just for music. I need bass. Lots of it. I want to rattle my neighbors Windows haha my brother used to have this pro studios system with a couple 10s and a couple 15s in this huge wooden box. Something like that would be perfect. Anybody got a recommendation?

Technically, that is not a compression driver. There is no phase plug that increases the pressure at the face of the diaphragm. They are a low compression driver, hense the term "wave guide" not "horn". If jbl is smart they will also use the wave guide to time align the H.F. driver with L.F. drivers.

Simple Anular diaphragm drivers like this use the tube around the outside of the diaphragm to choke down to the size of the exit hole before it mates to the horn. Is this hole actually smaller than the diaphragm area? That I don't know...but do know this driver can't work as intended in free air, so it's not a direct radiator either.
@jked7463
@jked7463 3 жыл бұрын
@@aaronmatuszny8856 agreed. But choking down the orifice that way introduced phase cancelations. That high compression can also introduce distortion. The purpose of a phase plug is reduce the size down and maintain phase if the different frequencies. With all "tube" reducer of that apparent diameter, high frequencies can bounce around inside the tube disrupting response. Very interesting. The buchart is a true wave guide with no compression what so ever. I worked with a company many years ago that used low compression horns. To get around the issue of high frequency phase issues, they crossed over to a dedicated high frequency horn, kind of like crossing over a dynamic midrange driver before it's first break up mode.
@aaronmatuszny8856
@aaronmatuszny8856 3 жыл бұрын
@@jked7463 let's back up a sec: are you sure there's no phase plug? My LSR708i has one (a very similar WG & driver)...come to think of it I've never seen a JBL without one.... It would seem silly for JBL to forget all that Harman research now.
@jked7463
@jked7463 3 жыл бұрын
@@aaronmatuszny8856 from looking at the video, it does not look like there is one, but I am looking on my phone so I could be missing it. A phase plug usually covers the whole diaphragm & has slots or covers about 1/2 the diaphragm. And open in the middle. Like I said, maybe, or maybe not.

Ron, the sharp upward rise in response around 15 kHz is a resonance that's found in ALL metal tweeters whether they be compression or dome. Usually it's higher up in frequency at 20 kHz or higher and most manufacturers assume you'll never hear it. It's obvious JBL didn't try to reduce or notch out the resonance in the crossover in an attempt to save pennies. If I had $4k to blow on speakers, I would be ordering a pair of Tekton Moabs tomorrow, not this made in China JBL GARBAGE...LOL.
