Join us on a breathtaking journey through Peru's rugged Andes in our latest video, where we tackle the exhilarating ascent to the towering heights of Mt. Huascaran. At an elevation of 4700 meters / 15,400 ft, we find ourselves navigating a narrow dirt road, bordered by a sheer cliff on one side and a rocky face on the other, making every turn an adrenaline-fueled moment.
Our destination? An idyllic campsite overlooking a stunning glacier-fed lake, set against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks and cascading glaciers. Experience the sheer beauty of this high-altitude paradise, from the panoramic views down a vast valley to the dramatic nighttime sounds of glacier winds and shifting ice. Despite the challenges, including a reluctant diesel heater and the thin air at high elevation, we find warmth and awe in this unparalleled setting. Witness the beauty and the obstacles of overland travel in South America's most iconic landscapes.

You were smart to bring supplemental oxygen. Incredible. This is why people are motivated to build rigs like yours!
@Everlanders
@Everlanders 2 ай бұрын
Thanks, we pushed through the night with mild headaches and sore necks without using the oxygen, we were trying to conserve it in case it got worse. but we did okay... I'm trying to find a fingertip blood oximeter locally to show in upcoming videos. I think it would be neat to see the arterial oxygen saturation drop at higher elevations and how fast the O2 tank would help. It's all known science already, but neat to see. I just added the calculated effective oxygen percentage to our dashboard screen. We were down to 11% up there...

@@Everlanders I was told that the more time you spend at altitude the more your body adapts to collecting oxygen via increased red blood cells. Or some such mechanism. Don't know if it's true.
@Everlanders
@Everlanders 2 ай бұрын
Yes, I think that's true, we've been at 3000+ meters elevation for some weeks, and I think that helped. Even the people we met from Lima, (at sea level) were having much more problems breathing (and fainting) having only come up for the weekend...
@MortenBulskov

It does. On Everest the climbers make several trips to higher camps and down to Basecamp to get used to the altitude. A lot of athletes train in high altitude to get more red blood cells. Sherpas and the indigenous people in the Andes also have a lot more red blod cells genetically@@JerryKauffman

Legendary camp spot. I've had a few like that in Canada, the US and Mexico. My one home is a 1973 VW bus and the other is a 1973 30 foot sailboat moored in Campbell River. I've worked in IT for almost 30 years so the mix of digital and analog on your channel is wonderfully appealing.

Love the video! I think there is a lot of misconceptions about glaciers. Most folks think that "climate" is responsible for their melting. But truth be told they have been melting since the end of the ice age. It is remarkable that they are still here, but people don't realize prior to 12,000 years ago. Glaciers were did not exist are are technically not part of the natural landscape. They were never intended to be here forever, they will at some point disappear. So enjoy them and admire them while you still can.

What a great adventure! Thank you for sharing it with us all😄 IMHO, Those scooter shots, did indeed make for some great shots. Both of the scenery and the switch-back curves, but also some great shots of the truck. I still find that new-ish AC fan shroud to be a great and good looking upgrade. So Kara, it was great to hear that you really had a lot of fun riding the scooter 🤪 It seemed like engine breaking was enough for moste of the down crawl for the truck. Does your scooter have regenerative breaking, or motor breaking, or just some kind of mechanical breaks?
@Everlanders
@Everlanders 2 ай бұрын
Thanks SO much!!! I had an absolute blast riding downhill on those switchbacks... What a view and an incredible way to experience it. Jason says "The scooter has both, Electric Regen braking (which you can hear the ABS pulsating at times), the Regen has 3 fixed levels that you can set while stationary, but it's not variable while riding... And it also has cable operated mechanical Disk Brakes on both wheels."

"Mountain Viscacha" (Lagidium spp.). Viscachas are part of the chinchillidae family, making them relatives to the chinchillas, but they are not true chinchillas. These animals resemble rabbits with long tails and have thick, soft fur. They are quite large compared to the domestic chinchilla, with some species in the viscacha family resembling the size of a small rabbit. Viscachas are known for their ability to adapt to the harsh conditions of the high Andes, living at elevations of up to 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) where vegetation is sparse. They are herbivorous, feeding mainly on grasses and plants found in their mountainous environment.

Loved your video. Wow. Was the green lake you camped at due to copper?
@Everlanders
@Everlanders 2 ай бұрын
Not so much, It's because Glaciers, acting much like bulldozers, grind against the rock of valley floors and walls as they move, pulverizing the rock into a fine powder of silt and clay. This fine-grained powder is then carried into the lake by the meltwater. The unique turquoise hue of these lakes results from the way glacial flour scatters sunlight. Specifically, the fine particles suspend in the water and scatter the sunlight, reflecting back more of the blue and green spectra, which gives the water its characteristic turquoise color
