“Eye roll” over the phrasing of “good cholesterol” and “bad cholesterol” as these lipoproteins are part of a cycle that we can not live without. This is a very old, and incorrect way to view the lipoprotein system. LDL cholesterol is not causal to CVD but a marker and, as was stated, it is much more complex. The best place to start is inflammation caused by such things as smoking, pollution and high fructose corn syrup. Health eating patterns certainly are the key and, as was mentioned, diets that remove processed foods such as Mediterranean diet, low carb diet, or vegetarian diet will likely improve health markers much more than focusing on just reducing cholesterol or saturated fats in our diets.

I used to be a vegetarian (40 years). Had multiple health issues. Now I’m on a carnivore diet. Health issues have been removed. I eat a lot of grass fed meat cooked in animal fat and organic fruits. Blaming cholesterol for heart disease is like blaming fire crews for starting fires. Just because cholesterol is at the site doesn’t mean it is the cause.

@@KevinAmatt Hi Kevin. It’s so cool that you have found a diet that is working for you! I follow Shawn Baker who is also a carnivore. I feel great on a low carb (less than 50 grams). I have met many people who have a variety of dietary patterns (non-sugar, non highly processed) who feel great and, appear, healthy and, given our current understanding (or lack thereof) of nutrition, my feelings have moved to there is no “one diet for all” but each person needs to pick a dietary pattern that works well for them. Just to be clear, a healthy dietary pattern would not, in my view, contain highly process foods containing the deadly mixture of sugar, fat, and processed carbs :-)

Eye roll when people misunderstand the bromides of the high cholesterol, keto and carnivore guys who are already backpedaling heavy on their books and their original claims. Of course, there is bad cholesterol HDL is not really good cholesterol. Too much of a good thing. Just because we need cholesterol for all sorts of functions doesn’t mean we need to eat it. Our bodies literally make all the cholesterol that we need and then a small cohort. We have people who make too much. The people who make too much get heart disease, no matter what they do. The whole thing is so bloody obvious and the only reason people are in denial about us cause they want to keep eating bacon and butter. Knock yourself out.

There is a desperate need for education amongst the medical profession regarding more rare conditions. I have HFI. I have finally got an appointment to be seen at a specialist centre. In the meantime I have made myself ill by eating a “healthy” diet, increasing the variety and portions of plant based foods that I have been eating. I learnt from the specialist centre that I must limit my fructose intake from vegetables to 1gm per day. Unfortunately a “healthy” diet is a potential killer for me. :(

A family member (in the UK) has just had a blood test & because of lipid levels & the ratio has been advised by our GP practice to cut down on food with saturated fat, she's a vegetarian so it's eggs, butter cheese, etc. When is this information going to be picked up by NICE, & the British Heart Foundation, & advice brought up to date?

I am afraid that GP’s have little to no nutritional training and that they often get trapped into their own bias and nutritional paradigm. Quite frankly, any nutritional advice from a GP is worth a grain of salt (bad pun?) and it’s about finding a dietary pattern that avoids the deadly combination of sugar/fats/processed carbs that works for you. This could be vegetarian, Mediterranean, low carb etc…..

If dietary cholesterol has very very little influence on a person's blood cholesterol levels, then how come Dr. Greger has videos showing cholesterol studies showing the opposite? I'm not sure who to believe, but would be interested to hear any views on whether the studies he sites (and opinions he gets from them) are wrong. Speaking anecdotally (my study of one;)!).... I had a blood test in May 2014 and then another in November 2016. I started eating vegan in 2015. 2014 = LDL = 6.00. HDL = 1.34. 2016 = LDL = 3.70. HDL = 1.14. Listening to the podcast, and especially reading some of the comments, I'm not sure if such a reduction is good any more. But to say dietary cholesterol has very very little influence on a person's blood cholesterol levels seems contrary to my results.

I appreciate the reduced concern in mainstream health with dietary cholesterol, but this team still has a way to go, because there is no good reason to try to lower serum cholesterol, even LDL. Serum LDL only gets into trouble when it is damaged, and it is not damaged by its own quantity; it is damaged by oxidation and glycation, which only happen with metabolic-syndrome-inducing dietary patterns or heavy smoking. The correlation between LDL and heart disease is so small that it boggles the mind that people would give that correlation much weight. There are many better predictors of heart disease, and many heart risk calculators DON'T EVEN ASK ABOUT LDL OR TOTAL CHOLESTEROL, because the correlation is so weak compared to other things that they ask about. Don't worry about serum cholesterol; it is a fool's game. Worry about inflammation, and that comes from eating donuts, cakes, cookies, fries, added sugars, etc.

I think the main Takeaway point from this was highlighted at the 15 minute mark where the doctor finally mentioned that if you don’t eat the cholesterol, your body will make it for you - on a daily basis. She mentioned that most people don’t eat above 300 mg of dietary cholesterol a day. And also said that even if they ate up to 700 it wasn’t gonna affect the body adversely. Well if I’m not mistaken I believe the liver, on a daily basis, makes 3 to 5 g of cholesterol. That’s 3000 to 5000 mg. Daily. So if you eat 700, the body makes 2300 (using 3000 mg as your body’s daily requirement in this example). Only eat 100, liver makes up the rest (ie 2900). Unless you’re drugged up on a statin of course. The question you might ask yourself is this…who’s smarter (ie what YOUR body needs)…the American heart association along with all the other government entities. Or your body? Gee, I wonder why is my liver is making all this cholesterol every day? Duh…. Point is, don’t avoid the food because of dietary cholesterol. You’re gonna have the same amount of cholesterol in your blood on a daily basis whether you eat 0 mg of cholesterol or 3000 milligrams of cholesterol. Why not get the cholesterol and all the great nutrients from the (whole) food itself!? Food or liver-Take your pick.

@nokieng6502 Жыл бұрын
Hi David. The body will make however much cholesterol it needs to function properly. I suppose it can be 800 mg. If that’s what a body needs to balance out what was consumed that day. The daily requirement varies from individual to individual. What you don’t eat it will make. BTW The liver is only one organ that produces cholesterol. Cholesterol is produced in many other areas within the body. But the liver does make the most I believe.

Here is what the American Heart Association said about dietary cholesterol in 2015: “Previously, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommended that cholesterol intake be limited to no more than 300 mg/day. The 2015 DGAC will not bring forward this recommendation because available evidence shows no appreciable relationship between consumption of dietary cholesterol and serum (blood) cholesterol, consistent with the AHA/ACC (American Heart Association / American College of Cardiology) report. Cholesterol is not a nutrient of concern for overconsumption.” Dietary cholesterol is harmless...eat as much as you want...

I have incredibly low faith in doctors on cholesterol. In my lifetime I’ve had doctors tell me to stop eating eggs, cheese & dairy, meat, nuts, etc. told me to go on those statins to reduce my cholesterol as otherwise “it would clog my arteries”. I’ve been ignoring them and have on my own been no high energy carb diet (low energy carbs like green veg is great - let’s all chant “green veg is great”) for over 20 years. So last year my doctor challenged me to a ct calcium artery scan and stress test, it came back with ZERO arterial calcium and no heart issues. So at that finally my doctor said “I guess I can’t convince you now to take statins”. I’m exhausted at arguing with doctors on preventative healthcare. I only see them for really critical things or treatments with known efficacy like my tetanus booster.

People with heart disease typically have high levels of LDL in their blood. However, not everyone with with elevated LDL has heart disease. There is a belief in some circles that although high LDL levels can be associated with cardiovascular disease it may well not be the cause of cardiovascular disease. High LDLis merely a response to other things going on in the body (inflammation). There is a book published called The Great Cholesterol Myth, that attempts to debunk Ancel Keys theories. That would be an interesting debate.

And its' not LDL that's 'bad' anyway. There are two basic groups of LDL & it's only the small dense particles that can cross cell walls that are a potential problem. Particle analysis being the only way to identify that & there still isn't any climinal evidence to confirm that it causes heart attacks or strokes, even if there is a correlation.

I’ve been on statin for almost 5 years. Watching the video made me realise that I’m on a very healthy diet.Should I stop taking statin?

I would suggest you do a deep dive into the history and science of statins, and their risks. The best science breakdown of statins I ever saw was a statistical breakdown that found statins brought the desired effect to about one third of one percent of patients, and nearly a third of people who try statins cannot tolerate them at all. Do research and get the facts, then talk to your doctor about it, armed with facts.

No, if your doctor told you to be on statins, you shouldn't change that unless the cholesterol goes down to healthy levels.

maybe eating external cholesterol makes your body lazy and not make its own cholesterol when you need it and that is the danger.

There are some very worrying aspects to the portfolio diet. first nearly all soy protein is GMO these days, second plant sterols are sterols and, according to Dr Peter Attis .are just as dangerous as cholesterol. Lowering the level of one sterol by replacing it with another is crazy. This is the advertising stunt of the Flora and similar processed plastic butter alternatives

Cholesterol is no longer a nutrient of concern 7 years ago and there's not even any epidemiological evidence that food's high in sat fat are an issue nor that these diets lead to heart disease. Why not address the fact that reducing cholesterol.ldl doesn't have any therapeutic benefit? Whereas not having high insulin blood sugars, smoking and other things that damage artery lining. Over simplified advice from the Stone age 1990s!

Very interesting subject that could have been better understood if Jonathan didn't like the sound of his voice so much. Wrapping up the theme would have been useful without his intervention. . I understand that it's Jonathan 's program and that I/we have the option to not listening to the end/ or bypassing the program altogether. That, I think, would be a shame because something might be learned from listening carefully. The problem isn't the content of the talk, on the contrary, it could have been extremely helpful. My objection, I repeat, is ( that Jonathan) does not know where to stop with the commentary. Editing, cutting down to basics, leaving ' untouched' the very clear explanation from the scientist would have been enough.

Post your references Sarah. You go against people like Dean Ornish, Michael Greger and Neal Barnard. I don't think you are a qualified "real" scientific nutritionist

Eggs are the best and cheapest source of nutrition. I love eggs especially the yolk when it's half cooked. I guess the issues with food these days are that too much chemical is used to grow the crops, and poison on the soil and water. As for animals, the type of feedings may impact the quality of the meat 🤷
