High Flying with The Syma X5C-1 Quadcopter

High Flying with The Syma X5C-1 'Upgraded Version' Quadcopter. The camera is in it's standard slightly downward facing position, although I kept view of it the whole time others with me lost view of it. We could have taken it higher but this was high enough for today. We'll get in a wider open space for the next video in the Peak District Dales and push it to it's limits as high as it will go with the cam fitted and get both views from the fitted cam and also from the ground.

One thing a lot of people dont mention in their reviews is that the syma is made of 2 different plastics. The prop guards, landing gear, propellor blades and battery door are made of quite flexible plastic so it flexes in a crash. This is important to know if you are a total noob like me. The battery door flexing is handy if you want to detach the camera but have the door in place. .The rest of it is quite hard plastic and it is light enough to withstand multiple crash landings on grass when you first start out. I found the bundled screwdriver to be pretty much rubbish and unable to do much at all. I weighed the bundled cam that comes with it and it only weighs 8g with sd card as opposed to around 30g for a mobius cam and around 35g for a go pro cam The weight of that extra battery needed pushes the weight up. Mine came with a 4 GB Sd card and the whole lot cost £35 delivered to my door. Another thing is you can buy just the quad copter for around £18(Uk amazon and ebay prices) delivered if you need spare parts if things go wrong or too many crashes.As a total newb with zero pre experience I would recommend this to anyone keen to try out a quadcopter for the first time in their lives. The only bad thing is the flying time of around 6 minutes without the cam attached so you'll need lots of batteries. After a bit of research people in the know seem to swear by turnigy 3.7v 750 Mha batteries so I've ordered 4 of those. Sometimes the polarity on the turnigy batteries is reversed so watch out and swap the wires around if nesscessary. Its great fun even without a camera ,the best thing I've bought for ages AND ITS CHEAP! Ps sorry about the long post but if you were like me and trying to find out info this post is good.

I have just bought one of these and I have to say I am seriously impressed. Don't get me wrong, it's not PHANTOM territory but for the money I would say it over delivers. This Quadcopter is seriously fast, you DO NOT want to get in the way when this thing is terrain surfing in Mode 2!. The stated range of 50m is not in the least accurate, I would suggest 50m is the MINIMUM range. I have flown mine (straight from the box, no antenna mods) on both vertical and horizontal axis and it will literally go out of sight. I had a mate confirm visually that the thing was still accepting control imputs even though I was at the other side of the common and could no longer see the Quadcopter! On a vertical flight I took it up until it was just a dark speck and I was no longer able to make out it's orientation, then I bottled it and killed the power! I have no idea how high this thing could actually go but out of sigh is good enough for me! I would say the range is limitless, as if you can't see it, you can't fly it. I would be wary to "push it to it's limits" as I think you will just loose the thing! Great flight though, your cam is as clear as mine!

This is an awesome flight video, you sir are quite the pilot! and take it from someone who owns a Syma x5c-1. I cant get mine to hold any given altitude that I want it at? I get it to an altitude that Im comfortable with and it just keeps wanting to go higher if I don't throttle it down or off all together (witch takes all the fun out of wanting to fly it in the first place) to keep it from getting away from me because it is to high? Yes I did see that you also had to, but it seemed like comparing apples to oranges as far as what I have to do? I am only comfortable flying it in areas were there are large fields with no trees or streets close by? I noticed that you still seemed to have control (at high altitude) even when it seemed to be quite a distance from you and If I let mine get that far from me I would lose all flight control of it? Once again that was quite the video !!!!

Great steady flying there - got my Syma X5C yesterday and finding it tough to turn the way I want as it goes along by itself in the air it seems and that's from just pushing up on the left throttle. Perhaps there is more wind up there I'm assuming which is drifting it? Quick question - would it be wise to purchase the X5C-1 and have both or just stick with X5C? Lastly, if you could post a video how to control the quad copter properly?

Hi Sam. Yes you will get drift, it is a stable quad but it isn't GPS and the wind is our enemy so the best outdoor conditions are a nice calm and still day. There is not much difference between the X5C and X5C-1 though we have found the X5C-1 to be more steady. We will do a more detailed video for the X5C-1 soon including the basic flight instructions.

The best price for a Phantom would be The DJI FC40 from places like ebay which includes a WiFi camera, I paid UK £330 for my one. If you can afford the extra I would get a Phantom rather that a Cheerson, we were thinking of getting the Cheerson CX-20 which is GPS and looks great value but we are glad we chose the FC40 instead.

You got that cheap if I say so as they keep going for £400+ on ebay at the moment. Will be patient or buy a Cheerson - public opinion seems to be divided on the latter though. Hi, I'm just about to buy my first Quadcopter but the only one i can find in the stores is the X5C, i am trying to find the X5C-1 but it is very hard to find in stores as most in my area (Leeds) only have the older model & i have discovered that the X5C-1 is a much better improved Quadcopter after reading reviews on the internet, what is your opinion about both Machines, ? I have gone higher LOL But what do you recon on the way it descends. I find it really hard to get down to a low altitude cus the power cuts out if you try descending not carefully enough

Yes that's with the standard battery fully charged. When you knock off the talking time it got approx 6 minutes of flight time in. I do find batteries vary though even when they are the same spec.

Connor fitness The V303 Seeker is a good quadcopter and another one to look at in the same price range is The Cheerson CX20. For a bit more though you can get a DJI Phantom which is a really awesome quad and a leader in the field. Also at the lower price end about the same price as the Syma X5C is the new JJRC H8C which is a great quad for the price (video of that to come soon).

I caught mine in a tree the other day. I went to a big park trying to get to the middle and a group of people that had the whole park to choose from sat right where i wanted to be so I was a bit near some trees. Anyway the quad was about 50 feet above ground and I had no idea it was so close to trees until it crashed into them and became well and truly stuck. It did have power and I tried to spin it out but it just seemed to make it worse. Anyway after throwing large half branches and sticks at it for about half an hour i hit it and dislodged it and was able to retreive it. I thought i was well away from the trees when it hit them. I'm going to tape a if lost please phone blah blah on it reward These quads are tough, I crash landed it in front of someone with a dog once and the dog ran forward and picked it up in its mouth but the quad was undamaged, thank god.

I am planning on getting one of these next month. DO you think the copter will handle a payload of one 3.7V 18650 Li-on battery? I figure the larger capacity batter will give it a longer run time.

Yes it should have no problem with that, especially with the prop guards and camera removed. I've had it carry a few things including a metal sparkler and a carrier bag with light items in.

be handy if you get your self a digital scale as well.. off hand the 18650 is 46-47g.. ..keep in mind that longer and heavier flight times =' burning out motors.. ..if you can't get your weight close to stock weight ..these littles ones will burn out with 15-25 minute air flight.. at full rpm.(with modded battery and 20-30g over weight)...good luck anyways..i'm always upgraded the bats.. on them..regardless...

As far as I can tell the x5c-1 does have different settings on it's flight controller which makes it more stable than previous versions, however previous versions had a 2mp camera and the x5c-1 only has a 0.3 (vga). Can anyone verify this?

There is a USB charger that comes with it for charging and yes, while recording you will have less flight time as the camera uses extra power.

Michael Vale I think your being more "wise" than slow, I had a few accidents at first when starting that were all down to rushing and not taking it slow. The X5C-1 range out of the box does seem better than the X5C which I think is down to the fact that the antenna isn't squashed up inside the remote like it was at first. Have fun my friend.

Is the any major difference between x5c and x5c-1? I bought a new x5c, when it crossed 3 stored building, I noticed blinking lights in the quad and it was out of control. I don't think it crossed even 40 meters. Also i don't k know whether it's due to wind when it crossed the roof of the building. When i see your video, I'm really surprised. :)

How high do you think it will go i wanted it fly it up in front of a tall tree because there was a HUGE birds nest up their and i wanted to see what was in it... never got high enough... i was sooooo lose too... oh and that was when i went camping. The most concern i have is it getting blown by the wind and falling to the water or the mother of the birds MIGHT attack the quad!!!

Yep it's always good to be catious in the wind near trees. They will go really, really high. As high as the range allows (which can be increased by modification). If you do want to try it out high make sure you choose a good wide open space as you'll have a better chance of recovering it if things go wrong as when your flying high it's easy for your quad to be caught by the wind and also to get disorientated. We're going to be testing the height soon both with and without camera fitted.

I did test in on saturday and got 70m (stock) BUT... when i went full throttle and lost range it kept on going... then stopped after about 3 seconds. I was sooo worried because i was right next to the water and it was going straight to it. Luckily it stopped JUST in frount of the water.

Sorry for the game of 21 questions ;-) I'm fairly new to quad copters - well in terms of knowing the value that is. I may settle for the Cheerson CX-20 and saw one on eBay with its original camera for £280. Is that a fair price? Just asking as you have vast knowledge. Not any come with a camera either. Or could buy one for £180 from Gearbest and by the camera for £50 on eBay. Only thing is, that would be from China meaning a long wait and possible taxes. The one for £280 is in the UK. Debating it....

Yes that's always the way, buying within the UK from UK is always the safest and fastest option but it is cheaper to buy from China, if they haven't paid import tax though you stand the chance of getting that on top but it will still work out cheaper even if you were charged for it. You are at the same place I was Sam, and when I weighed up the total cost of CX-20 plus camera it didn't work out much extra for The Phantom FC40 which has it's own WiFi cam, it's only 720p but it is decent enough. Looking back I've got no regrets and really happy we got the Phantom but I might have had regrets with the CX-20, that being said I do like the look of The CX-20 but it's not as faultless and tried and tested as a Phantom.

We have got an x5c quadcopter but yours goes alot higher than ours does it make a difference if your in high or low settings?

Hi another great vid is to the quad to tell us how high we are i know the quad is only a cheap version but a very good one i have the upgraded version as well you may be able to give me some idea when im flying i cant seem to do a circle i can go in a straight line the cut the corner and same again but not a smooth circle what is the best way to do a full circle any ideas

Once you get used to the direction and controls you don't need to be strict with the left/right/front/back stick, try slowly turning it in a circular motion (the stick) so your turning the quad instead of just sending it straight in the four directions.

ok thanks for that info i think maybe i was being hard on the turning because the first turn i did i lamded in a trea lol i just turned on the engines on and off a couple of times and it losened from the branches no harm to the quad which is even more impressive than my flying lol ok thanks again and am looking forward to your nexed vid

Aiton Demito They are very durable so you get a lot out of them. There are no specific motor problems so they last well, how long will depend on your style of flying. Flight time is about 5-10 minutes depending on battery used.

Yes thats a good price and you will be happy with it when you get it, comparing a X5C to a Phantom is like comparing a bicycle to a motorbike lol so go easy with it on your first flight. That quad is basically the same as the FC40 I have but without the camera, there are some good GoPro looking copy cameras out there and the good news is the phantom will take a good payload so you have plenty of choices :)
