I love how we went from mounting on carry handles which was optimal height, then cut them off to do a direct mount, learned that sucked, went to a slightly higher mount, and now have started to transition back to a high mount at the same height the handles used to be lol.

Optimal would be a camera in the bullet like a Javelin, and just holdover for the natural drop in the trajectory. 1.93" mounts introduce massive holdovers... which, if you know them, party on... but it robs the goodness of having SCHV flat trajectory. Also you will get shot directly in the forehead, immediately.

Part of this evolution back to the higher mounting is driven by night vision, at least on the military and LEO side. 15 years ago, most US Soldiers shot at night with the IR lasers being bore sighted and essentially shooting from the low ready or the hip. The aimpoints and ACOGs just didnt have IR reticles. Now with better IR options on the reticle side, technology has progressed (and become less expensive) that shooting through w/ an IR optic amd reticle with NVGs is much more practical and an option, which necessitates a higher sitting on the weapon system

When firing a pistol the standard was bring the sights up to your eyesight not your eyes to your sights...obviously meaning to not adjust your natural body position to bring your face down to where you are pointing your pistol. Whereas, when firing a rifle we were taught to bring our face down to the rifle and using the check weld to aquire the sight picture, ensure sight alignment and engage the target. It would make a more consistent use of the two types of small arms to bring your weapon to your eyes with a higher rise rifle sight.

I have an ADM 1.93 and p4xi on my 11.5 and it's fantastic for shooting on the move from 50-200, but I had to go back to 1/3 on my 14.5 colt socom barreled SHTF rifle because of the prone issues you talked about. It's extremely flat and open where I live, in order to get any concealment and minimize your own position, being able to go prone is essential. Environment dictates kit which is something I think a lot of guys forget or just don't know from prior experience when building out their weapon platform. Great content again Mojo, quickly becoming one of the best in the business. Appreciate you, brother.

funny how everything comes full circle. We used to run ampoints on our carry handles on colt commandos. worked great for keeping our heads up and amor front. then flat tops became the thing with a hard cheek weld . Personally, high mounted optics are great for offhand, NODs passive aiming, and battle rattle interference (straps, comms, gas masks, respirators, etc). However, there's also a time and place for conventional height, even lower height. Primarily, when shooting from cover. The higher that sight line is from the bore line, the more of yourself is being exposed to clear that shot. Ideally, I think there's a time and place for everything. ACOG on A2/A4 handle is just fine. Give that extra clearance and eye relief while retaining lower sight line, just in case. What's even better IMO is Prism/LPVO with piggy dots. For run/gun offhand, use the dot. For firing from cover, drop your head down and save your head from incoming. Less neck craning too. Offset dots also let you cant your gun and get down even lower on the deck... And that is also nice. I wouldn't dismiss that idea. If I'm out somewhere wide open flat as a fuckin pancake, little cover or terrain features to hide behind, I would seriously consider offset. The lower I can get while returning fire, the better.
@xefitnop
@xefitnop 2 жыл бұрын
i dont really get good eye relief on ACOGs unless i am right on the rear lense. Not as bad with the LVPO but i still notice it. I've always been a red dot/holographic guy i think because my eye relief issues never manifest with it. I feel comfortable hitting targets out to 300 yards with it, a consideration is target identification and positive id etc though.

I use a rear iron, chopped off a carry handle, with the ring cut off the aperture and a fixed front. I full cowitness with a red dot, so I can put down the peep and have a clear view through the optic and raise it for precision. So, Im always training on iron and glass simultaneously and the mechanics are exactly the same. Plus, I can always rezero one, off the other.

You bring up a good point on exposing more of your head to get firing solutions from cover. Iirc one of the reasons Simo Haya preferred to not use optics on his m28 is because of the dangers posed by raising his head to achieve a sight picture.

My personal opinion in like the CQC role I’d go with the higher mounted optics to that lower mid range. But for patrolling out in the middle of nowhere Afghanistan or very long engagement distances id go with the ACOGs and Elcans on the lower mounts. More stable shooting position and allows you to prone out lower for avoiding incoming and have a better position. I’d also say that having multiple optics for different mission sets is ideal. Something for short/mid range then another for your medium to longer engagements

The cool thing about the unity aswell is the fact it's got a built in aperture that cowitness's perfect with a front post or flip up so you never have to worry about yanking a mount off to use your irons if shit gets hairy.

Devgru and Delta were essentially doing this when they used 416s. An exps3 is already raised with the 416 upper reciver where you mount optics and rail are slightly elevated, so this has been a thing. The issue I s have with it too high is that height over bore issue. Sure, it feels natural, but we now have to compensate all the time for it being too high. An exps3 along any ar platform works fine. What would prevent us from bringing our cheek to far down would be a cheek cushion on the stock or a riser like the LaRue one. It helps mitigate this issue but also doesn't have such a high height over bore.

The utg risers are solid, I've used one for a few years no issues. Dropped it a few times without issue

I get the 2.26” advantage because of night vision use for special units. For a regular person, it might create more problems than it solves. Having said that, I don’t have a riser for my Eotech, and I may still get one to try out at some point.
