00:00 The car currently consumes about one liter of oil per 1000 kilometers
When you start the cold engine, the oil ends up getting sucked down through the bad seal into the combustion area, producing a blueish smoke out of the tailpipe
In the previous episode, it was already stated that the compression pressures of the engine are fine.
At this point, I am 99% sure that it is time to replace the new valve stem seals in the engine
01:10 Lock the engine with locking tool!
First we need to get all pistons to be in the 90° position
Remove the timing chain tensioner
Lock the camshafts
03:44 Remove VANOS units
Release central bolt from exhaust vanos unit
Remove exhaust and intake VANOS unit
05:21 Remove exhaust camshaft
Remove bearing caps
06:29 Remove intake camshaft and return springs
Release guide block screw and then loosen the fitting screw
Remove intermediate levers, roller cam followers and alignment elements
12:14 Remove eccentric shaft / intermediate shaft
Eccentric shaft adjuster
Relax the intermediate shaft
13:50 Replace valve stem seals
Use valve Spring Tool Set for remove valve stem seals
Pressurize the cylinder so that the valves stay in place and do not drip into the cylinder
Remove valve keys with a magnet and then remove spring and spring cup
Remove valve stem seal and valve spring
20:39 Install eccentric shaft
Check all needle bearings of eccentric shaft for ease of movement
If one or more needle bearings are faulty, the complete eccentric shaft must be replaced
Adjust eccentric shaft minimum lift
22:59 Install intake camshaft and roller cam followers
Make sure roller cam followers are correctly seated
Make sure that rollers of intermediate lever are correctly guided on guide block
Check that the return spring is in the correct position on both intermediate levers
Check intermediate lever and roller cam follower again for correct installation position
28:05 Install exhaust camshaft
Put the exhaust camshaft roller cam followers
29:42 Install VANOS; intake and exhaust camshaft adjusters
Position exhaust camshaft adjuster at exhaust camshaft
The installation position of the camshaft adjusters can be freely selected
Next, position intake camshaft adjuster at intake camshaft
Pre-tension timing chain with special tool 009460 to 0.6 Nm
Install chain tensioner
32:02 Checking timing chain for elongation
Special tool (117200)
33:11 Checking the condition of the pcv membrane in the valve cover
33:54 Install valve cover
Secure bolts for cylinder head cover in the sequence 1 to 12
37:17 The final result after replacing the valve stem seals!
38:35 The gasket at the bottom of the sound insulation of the upper part of the bulkhead must not be damaged
Required parts for this maintenance procedure:
2 x 11367536087 Torx bolt for Vanos adjustment unit
1 x 11317607551 Tensioner for timing chain
1 x 11340033950 Valve seal kit (16 pcs. in a set)
1 x 11127582400 Valve Cover Gasket Set
Tools required:
1 x BMW TOOL 117440 Camshaft Timing Locking (98,29€)
1 x BMW TOOL 117110 Valve Pressure Spring Installer Remover Tool (72,90€)
1 X Torque Wrench for 0,6 Nm

Got the same car, got it second handed in really bad shape, only starting to getting her good maintenance after a lot of work. I already did the clutch, transmission rotor and head gasket change. Was planning on doing the vanos seal since they bean spitting oil from the start but I wasn’t experienced enough to do it myself. Thank you for your work, you’re really helping out!

I just did this today on my 1.6 thp Peugeot 308 following your instructions. Thanks for uploading such an informative guide, I was quite worried about timing the engine but everything seems to be working fine.

to everybody that is wondering, this did solve my oil consumption from 1-1.5 liter/1000km to about 250ml/1000km. I also have a oil leak somewhere at the back side of the engine so probably that 250ml would be even less if that is fixed.

Done all of this great vid but I never adjusted eccentric shaft minimum lift and I'm know chasing a vannos intake control fault , camshaft stuck 1130104 do u think this could cause it change solenoid and got a new vanos unit for the timing side timings spot on any help would be great thanks

Hy Jani I'm unable to find a valve spring tool set that has a M12x1.25 mm adapter for blowing into the cilinder using the compressor (M12x1.25 mm is the thread of the spark plug). Did your tool set had one ? .. or did you use a separate adapter?

hi, from your videos I see that you are an expert on this engine, I too have a 116i f20 but lately the car has been going badly. reading the errors, it comes out as a code 150c13 "third cylinder ignition out of tolerance" but I can't solve it. you can help me?

Fantastic video, and amazing work Jani. Thanks for sharing. The process of valve stem seal replacement is very extensive, I would do this alongside a timing chain replacement regardless of oil usage since a lot of process is similar. How long did it take you? Hope this solves the oil usage issue... Keep us updated!

Thank you! I did a lot of maintenance at once with time at my leisure, so nothing was in a hurry. But I would say it took a whole day just to change the rubbers on the valve stems. And of course filming took its own time 👍

Yeah, my 2006 316i also used 1 liter of oil per 1000km, according to my calculations. I used some cheap China-tools to do the job, and the total cost was about 150 EURO, new seals and tools included. This job costs 2500 EURO at BMW here in Norway, which is riduculous.

Great video as usual, thanks a lot. Let us know if the oil consumption slows down. Seems like you have quite a lot of carbon. I suggest change oil more often. BMW says 30k. I do not go beyond 15k. What next?

Great video! I think this will not solve the oil usage issue, the car just dont smoke anymore at idle.

@Jokesxxl Jani's consumption before valve stem seal replacement was 1 liter per 1000Km which is quite a lot. I have 169k on my clock and do 1 liter per 4000km - which i consider excessive. Any reason you think it will not solve, or at least significantly reduce consumption? Cylinder pressure test was ok. I do see a lot of carbon though.

@@mikeukabam1075 i had a 114i with 125k kilometers at the clock, it smoked when idle and had an oil consumption of 1L @ 1500km. I replaced the valve stem seals and valve cover and had again oil consumption for 1L @ 2000km. Then i changed over to 5W40 liqui moly and it used 1L @ 3000km. I did a compression test and looked at the cylinder walls with a camera it was all good. Thats why i think the problem will not be solved. Now i drive a Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2.0T with zero oil consumption……

@@Jokesxxl thanks for the information. Hope someone finds where the oil goes. Lets see if Jani's consumption goes down. One posibility, with the carbon build up I saw could be the oil rings (lowest set) loose some effectivness. How often did you change oil? Don't want this problem coming my way

@@mikeukabam1075 i changed the oil every 7500km the only solution is chaging the oil scrape rings around the piston. If it consume already 1L @1000km you are to late and never get it back to factory consumption! I bought the car @104k kilometers, the previous owner (a friend) bought it @ 65k and did every 15k a oil change and drive it well and not hard….

Today, I finished the job, a real fiddly task with the valve wedges. But it was really necessary; even the chain was at its maximum length.

Bonjour j'ai une fumer bleu a l'échappement après un arrêté de 5 min et après plus rien . Je consomme 1litre dhuile pour 1500 kilometres j'ai commander pour faire les joint de queue de soupape. C'est bien ces symptome pour les joint de soupape. Merci

How much pressure is needed ob the cylinder and does it need a big compressor? Thx

I used a small 6 liter 1.5 hp air compressor that produces a maximum of 8 bar/116 Psi. A small air compressor starts almost all the time, so a bigger one would be better. The bigger one would at least allow you to work in a quieter environment. 😉
