Another great part about the game that i don't hear from people talking about the game is the soundtrack. TOBACCO did an amazing job at composing the music for the game with his weird electronic sounds and atmospheric tones throughout the game.

For me the biggest thing holding High on Life back is the meta and "ironic" commentary. It's something I don't care for when Rick & Morty does it and since the game is made by the same people, it ends up falling flat for me too personally. I think of meta stuff and forth wall breaks like strong spices in cooking, little sprinkles of it is fine and can even improve the dish, but it's very easy to go _very overboard_ with it and completely obliterate the dish instead. Rick & Morty fell into this trap with irony too, why care about anything in the show if Rick is going to lampoon you for caring two seconds later? The game, conceptually, _really appeals to me_ it's like a modern version of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath and I fucking LOVE the creativity of Oddworld and thus by extension here High on Life. But the moment I start getting invested in the game Kenny has to pipe up about Kotaku, or DOOM, or indie games, and it's like yes - I get it - aren't video games WACKY hardy har har. Like in the secret ending (SPOILERS) where you get the dialogue explaining the Human Haven was just a set up so an alien scientist could study the "uniqueness" of the human brain structure, as soon as it ends both Kenny and the achievements start doing forth-wall breaks about a sequel. Kenny in general is the worst offender because his personality amounts to "Morty but a Gun", so if you aren't super into Rick & Morty or outright dislike it, the game is going to grate on you. I do think the argument I've seen of "just because you didn't like the comedy doesn't mean the game's bad!" is a bit faulty too. The game is trying to be funny - part of the marketing and pitch of the game is it is a comedic one, so if someone doesn't like the jokes that negatively impacts their experience. Thus, in their perspective, the game is bad. I think game critique falls into this weird pit where people forget it's ultimately subjective.

Don’t expect the game to be on Eternal levels of combat, but High on Life does has some pretty fun gunplay reminiscent of Doom in the way that your different tools interact to make satisfying weapon combos on enemies, and as long as your hopes aren’t that high that the game will be as good as Doom there is a huge amount of fun to be had in High on Life.

Being their second game, most faults can be forgiven. However, some parts really feel really restrictive, even when given a choice (very mild spoils) I knew the whole “you killed a kid” gag was coming up and ignored it to go get the knife so I could then return and execute them. However, when I returned the kid npc was gone, and I was rightfully mad they didn’t think of this particular situation and added something (like pressing the pause button in the tutorial). Also the 6-torg optional kill was really nothing, I was going to not kill them, but there is no reason to not to from what I know of after you listen to all their voice lines, so I killed them for a potential achievement. The choices I made weren’t choices at all really, if you don’t go with a gag you lose in some way, so it just feels pretty restrictive to me.

My criticism with the comedy on this game is that they don't know when to shut up, which it was something that everyone complained too in Borderlands 3. You go around playing the game and then they show you/make a joke about something and it may be funny or not (comedy is "subjective" anyways), that's not a problem and I like these type of jokes in video games (Undertale is one of my favorites and they do that), but the thing is they draw out the joke so fucking much and they never stop talking that the joke that was supposed to be funny turns out unfunny. Like, in a scene they reference anime and the gun says "wow this is like that anime and shit", a normal reference joke but then he talks and talks and lenghten the joke to no further and like, I get it, "funny anime that people know about lol", I got the joke so STOP. You just make the joke and that's it, why it has to be an entire pargraph? It gets so frustrating.

As somebody with over 1000 hours on Borderlands 3, High on Life made me understand the criticism towards Borderlands 3 and its dialogue. Normally "bad" dialogue isn't a dealbreaker for me, but combine the game not shutting up at times with technical problems like (in my case at least) a softlock when a boss is almost dead, I was genuinely too frustrated to continue. I'm sure it will get fixed, and I hope it does, because I would actually like to finish the game without feeling like I'm hate playing it, if that makes sense.

The vitriol for this game before it came out was honestly insane, gamers in general beg for uniqueness and ingenuity in AAA games nowadays and the moment they get it they shit all over it because it wasn't the specific kind of uniqueness and ingenuity they wanted and they just refused to laugh at any of the humor because they deemed it unfunny then proceeded to look at the next meme compilation where a porn video cuts to raiden or vergil for the 20th time, or just a "loud = funny" vid then proceeding to shit on another game's humour for it. The game was really fun for me and I was not expecting to have that much fun with it (again, despite having little to no enemy variety). High On Life works best when it does small scale bits. I don't like the Moplet dying joke scene, but I can appreciate it and understand people like that. When it does long bits they create problems which can kill the entire bit. These long bits are likely where the hate comes from, discussing Kenny's backstory here! So Kenny is revealed later to have left with a Smuggler who landed on their home planet. The G3 found them and Kenny takes the blame The Smuggler who was going to leave was never going to mention talking guns or a planet with space to build? Even if Kenny killed him there is a risk of someone looking for said Smuggler's wreck. Blaming Kenny for this seems really dumb when you use your head. Who is blaming Kenny? Only your allies. Not once do I recall any of the G3 mentioning this. The same allies who Kenny has fought along side willingly to get revenge. No character growth even comes from it. There is a trip later where they work through it. They then immediately go back to hating Kenny. If the G3 revealed it then it would've at least been meaningful to do. There is 0 pay off, not even really a joke, and it contributes nothing to the main plot at all. It is made even worse when you consider Lezduit can only say their name and Kenny outright says he never had to tell everyone. Pure artificial conflict the entire way through. None of this works in any form. Given a lot of people look for the big emotional scene to get into a series... if all you see are jokes that don't work for you and this it can make you despise the game because you see the game at its worst.

Whilst I do like this video, I don't really agree with the parts talking about the humor. I do agree that people are too harsh on Justin Roiland's humor, but I don't think it works out too well in game form because the jokes are so drawn out most of the time. To give an example, there's an area where you can bring in a tiny city and stomp all over the buildings and there's a tour guide frekaing out. It would be a funny scene if the tour guide wasn't constantly talking about how I'm destroying the city and that's the punchline. It might be just me but it just doesn't work out as a joke well enough. Still though, even though I disagree with your opinion on the humor in this game, it doesn't take away the fact that this is a great video and a much appreciated fair look at this game when compared to other videos about it. Keep up the great work!
